Journelle Brings the Sexy Back to SoHo, Intimately!

The lingerie specialists at Journelle celebrated the grand opening of their third retail shop, drawing a maximum capacity crowd of VIP's to the new SoHo location at 125 Mercer Street! Team Epiphany PR led the charge, as attendees were treated to elegant hors d'oeuvres and spirits served in flower-adorned glasses.

DJ Neil Armstrong kept the mood lively all evening, and people mingled happily as they weaved through the freshly-designed displays. At the storefront, a very confident model showed off some exclusive Journelle pieces. Needless to say, photographers swarmed to her!

Inspired by the word "journellement," French for "daily," Journelle is a lingerie store representing the modern woman. The new SoHo Store is a testament to founder Claire Chambers vision of providing "tastefully-curated" intimates to busy women. And the prices aren't bad either! From important pieces to wear under your work clothes to gracefully sexy sets to show off at home, Journelle has something every lady can love in her wardrobe!

Lip Fix: Mint Glaze FX

Rummaging through the free bin at work, desperately seeking some kind of lip balm to help soothe my dry, sore cold weathered lips, I came across this product called MINT GLAZE FX. Giving it the old once over twice, I noticed it was cruelty free (big bonus in my book) and spf 15. I applied the minty goodness onto my lips and decided to spread the word.

Seven Questions with HUMAN INTONATION Founder Verneda White

During this past Fashion's Night Out in New York last September, I attended the Style Thirteen launch party where I got to meet the beautiful Verneda White - a fellow LL lady and London expat. As we enjoyed the collections that were on display and helped ourselves to some refreshments at the event, I got a chance to learn about Verneda's global background and her altruistic clothing collection called "HUMAN INTONATION." For someone who is still only in their 20s, and has gone through some trials and tribulations in their life, she has made quite an impression on me. Verneda is one of those persistent, vigilant folks who still have hope for this world by trying to make it better than it is through social awareness on global issues. What better way to give this young entreprenuer and social activist crazy kudos than featuring her on the Ladies Lotto blog?!

What is your name, age, occupation(s), location(s)?

"My name is Verneda Adele White, age 26, and I am the Founder & Creative Director of a charity-driven apparel brand called HUMAN INTONATION. I am based out of New York, with reach to London and Hong Kong."

Why do you do what you do? What inspires you in general and in your work? What makes you stand out from other artists?
"I started Human Intonation after two life changing experiences: My family’s survival through Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the loss of my 22 year old first cousin and best friend Wesley to AIDS five months later. In the last 2 years I launched Human Intonation to use fashion to raise social awareness and funding for a number of social & human rights issues including rebuilding New Orleans, LA, youth & minority HIV prevention, and have expanded into children in Darfur and Haiti.

I love fashion and I am obsessed with men and women graphic tees, tank tops and jersey dresses so I decided to create my own tees and tanks from scratch. Everything from Human Intonation is made from our original patterns and fabric. Most t-shirt brands buy their tees from a warehouse; we make our own! It is a privilege to take what I love and use it in a way to help make a difference in the lives of others. What makes my line stand out is that it is a fashion statement with the power to get people to start the conversation about these issues in a way that can change perceptions, change choices, change lives. We donate 20% of the proceeds from each sale to one of our non-profit partners working in the causes we support and create community events to get people involved."
What are some current projects you are working on?
"I am very excited about December 2nd when Human Intonation will host its first Co-Ed HIV forum and fashion presentation to generate an engaging, informative, and controversial discussion linking the tie between the dynamics of today’s male/female relationships and their impact on the epidemic of HIV among Women of Color. The event is titled “Protection is the NEW Black: Sex, Love + Lies in the Age of HIV” set to commemorate this year’s World AIDS Day."
What are you hoping the future will bring for yourself and your career?
"At the end of the day it is my goal is to get people to think about these issues in a way that they may not have done so before and to take action in how they live their lives. I hope my career lends itself to re-directing 'The NEW Purpose of Fashion,' to making an impression on others, and hopefully help another family avoid the type of loss my family has experienced.

When I think about myself in the future there are an endless number of things I aspire and look forward to. My sights are on Dubai and Egypt for travel, writing a book, becoming fluent in Spanish, and one day having a family too!"

What are your favorite places in the general NYC area?
"I am such a foodie! I live in Brooklyn and love checking out neighbourhood haunts to eat at like Song for Thai food in Park Slope and Madiba for South African in Fort Greene. But you can find me anywhere in the city with great food, cocktails, and friends."

What's it like to be a creative in a city like NYC? Do you feel happy, sad, stressed, paranoid, etc.?
"I used to live in Europe and Asia but I am grateful everyday to create in New York City. The pulse of the city both motivates and encourages me to keep pushing forward even when times are tough. I love being surrounded by other creatives and find more often than not that people are genuinely interested in thinking of what we can accomplish together. It is great to live in a place where I have received support for Human Intonation from the likes of Wyclef Jean and Harriette Cole. You definitely have to be tough skinned to live here but if I did not love it I would have moved already!"

Do you have any advice, life tips, suggestions for the Ladies Lotto community?
"With all of our drive, ambition, and constantly being on the go, please take time to care for yourself. Down time is so important where you just do nothing. We are an amazing group of women doing so many things, sometimes we forget to put ourselves first without feeling guilty about it. It is ok to unplug when you need to so you can stay healthy, avoid burnout, and keep kickin’ ass. Love you all!"

Join Verneda White on Thursday, December 2, 2010 as HUMAN INTONATION hosts a discussion about the dynamics of today’s male-female relationships impacting the increase of HIV in Women of Colour during their first Co-Ed HIV forum and fashion presentation culminating their 2010 campaign.

Wise Words on Friendship

You don't make a friend. You become a friend. Then you automatically will have friends. If you relate to people in a very friendly, affectionate way, by loving and caring, sharing and helping, then naturally they will see you as a good friend. When they see you as a good friend, then they become your friends. It begins with you. You should always try to do something nice for people. Never hurt anyone's feelings. The secret is to always look for opportunities to help others; look for ways to be nice to them.

Sometimes they might even be nasty to you; if so, ignore it, forget it. Maybe that is the way the are; but we should be nice to them. Even if someone says, "Oh, you're a fool," you should say, "Thank you." Don't retaliate with the same kind of words. Soon they will get tired of all that. Afterwards, they will even feel ashamed. The great sage Thiruvalluvar said that if people do something wrong to you or hurt you, do something really good for them in return. That is the best punishment. Why? Because they will be so embarrassed to have done that you you. It is in our hands. We can always make friends with anyone and everyone if we have the patience and understanding.

Spanish Orgasm Video: Driving Voters to the Polls

The Socialist Catalonian Party in Spain is causing a stir with this "orgasm" commercial made to drive voters to the polls.  Watch the video below!

The commercial depicts a woman having just voted turned on to the point of orgasm. It's causing a fuss from both the right & the left in Spain. Some say it's derogatory towards women. What do you think? Offensive, funny, empowering?

Frankly, I think this video is smart and a more empowering look at women as a driving force at the polls, along with making voting far more appealing... Creative concepts like this should be executed more in an effort to reach non-voters.

The big question to me is: Where are the senior citizen volunteers who usually work the polling stations?

Modern Mamahood: The Book That Saved My Pregnancy

Jennifer Louden has authored several books for women. In all of these books, she uses creative, self-evaluating exercises and assignments to reveal how we can master common challenges that are a natural part of womanhood.

When I was pregnant, I picked up Louden's "The Pregnant Woman's Comfort Book: Self Nurturing Guide to Emotional Well-Being During Pregnancy and Early Motherhood". I looked through the book when it arrived in the mail and thought it seemed pretty cool, something different.

It wasn't until I was in the thick of pregnancy, when my hormones went wilder than Lohan, that I was able to put this book to use. I loved that it has a 2-page spread matrix in the middle of the book. You read down the list of emotions on the chart, find what you are experiencing at the moment, and then look at the various chapters of the book that deal with sorting through those feelings.

Chapters that helped me most are How to Gracefully Ask For and Accept Support, Ambivalence: Grieving Changes, Fear and of course...Work. Each chapter was brief but included enough anecdotal and factual information to allow the pregnant reader to feel connected with and that help was on its way. The next few pages of each chapter are filled creative activities such as free writes, drawing, meditations, affirmations and action items.

One chapter in particular saved my pregnancy. It's entitled simply: Surrender. I was having a really hard time confronting the fact that I had zero control over many of the things that could happen during pregnancy and childbirth to myself and to my child. From small things like body changes to big things like stillbirth, I was a mess when it came to surrendering control of my destiny in this situation.

Me at 37 Weeks...woah.

Louden's solution was for me to learn to sink into submission and explore what it meant to me and the larger meaning of why I was called to surrender right now. After an awesome free write, an assignment that had me draw/paint/color five different representations of what surrendering meant to me, and a heavy affirmation, I came out on the other side with a deeper connection to why I must surrender to nature and how to feel okay about it. Can't thank this woman enough for allowing me to actually enjoy that beautiful place of surrender aka my pregnancy.

Other titles by Louden using a similar approach that many LL's would probably devour include:

Lip Service: The Health Risks of Oral Sex

Major, major ladies - take care of yourselves, HPV is finding its way into your mouths.

Health Risks of Oral Sex

Long known to cause cervical cancer, the pervasive but often silent human papillomavirus (HPV) has been finding its way into women's mouths

By Alyssa Giacobbe

Mische Eddins, 37, awoke with a head cold. Or what seemed like one anyway. Postnasal drip. Sore throat. Swollen lymph nodes. No biggie—it was the fall of 2007, and a seasonal bug was winding its way through Seattle. "I had just been bragging to my friends about how I'd managed to avoid getting sick," she says. "But I was healthy, so it all passed quickly." Everything, that is, except a swollen node on the left side of her neck, which, months later, hadn't gone away.

Christmastime came, and the little bump was still there. Sans appointment, Mische walked into her doctor's office and left with a script for antibiotics. No improvement. She then bounced from M.D. to M.D., and finally, six months after that seemingly innocuous head cold, she had a PET/CT scan. The results were a total shock: Mische had stage III oral cancer, and the disease had spread from her tonsil to her lymph nodes.

Within hours, her docs had scheduled a tonsillectomy and were talking about chemo and radiation. Someone suggested she prepare a will. "I was floored," she says. "A will?" A professional singer, Mische exercised almost every day, ate a mostly organic diet, didn't booze heavily, and never smoked as an adult. Even her doctors were stymied.

Searching for answers, one physician tested Mische's cancer cells for human papillomavirus (HPV), the sexually transmitted infection notoriously linked to cervical cancer. Mische was taken aback; she'd spent the past 16 years in two monogamous relationships and was fastidious about getting annual Pap smears, which had never been abnormal. Why were they now testing her mouth? Her doctors explained the worrisome new link between oral cancer and HPV, which can be transmitted to the mouth through oral sex. And indeed, she tested positive. Her oral cancer was HPV-related.

Ten years ago, oral cancer among women was practically unheard of. Patients were nearly always male and over 50, heavy smokers or drinkers, or both. (When actor Michael Douglas, 66, was diagnosed with the illness this past summer, the media pointed to his longtime half-a-pack-a-day habit.) But according to the Journal of Clinical Oncology, there has been a major upswing in HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer, a deadly disease often found in the base of the tongue and the tonsils. In fact, roughly a quarter of all oral cancers are now HPV-related, according to the American Cancer Society, and approximately 25 percent of cases occur in women—some as young as 19, says Gregory Masters, M.D., an oncologist at the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center in Newark, Delaware.

But how could HPV, a "down there" disease, be causing so many mouth problems? It's something the best doctors and public-health experts out there have long feared, thanks to the rampant spread of the virus. You've likely heard the daunting stats: Approximately 20 million Americans currently have HPV, with 6 million new infections discovered each year through Pap or cervical swab tests, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. What's more, the virus—which can have zero symptoms or bloom into a series of visible warts—will affect up to 80 percent of sexually active women at some point in their lives.

In the vast majority of cases, the body's immune system will clear HPV on its own within two years (there is some debate over whether the same HPV infection can ever return to cause cervical lesions later, but research is still in early stages). However, a small percentage of infected women—around 11,000 per year—will not clear HPV and may develop cervical cancer. This has prompted the federal government to recommend, somewhat controversially, that all girls be vaccinated for HPV by age 12.

To date, safe-sex campaigns have typically blamed the spread of HPV on unprotected vaginal intercourse. But it's now clear that the disease can be contracted orally too. And that's where things got dangerous for Mische Eddins and thousands of other women. Their mouths were infected with HPV-16, the particular type that most doctors believe is responsible for the majority of cases of HPV-related oral cancer.

Just how long HPV-16 lingers in the mouth before turning into cancer is uncertain. But what is evident is that more than 14 percent of cases aren't caught until very late stages, possibly because some physicians are slow to consider the cancer in young female patients. "Since HPV-related oral cancers don't affect the traditional group of those at risk for mouth cancer, a lot of these cases are missed or diagnosed late," affirms Eric J. Moore, M.D., an otolaryngologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. "Usually, the patient is healthy, exercises regularly, and eats right. She doesn't fit the profile."

Modern Mamahood: Behind the Mama - Part 2: Marissa Spano

Although many mothers best describe their role and day-to-day as "indescribable", Ladies Lotto Modern Mamahood is seeking to demystify what that means for different moms in an effort to create even more cohesion, compassion and connection within our LL community and beyond.

The Modern Mamahood "Behind the Mama" series will delve into the lives of our LLady moms. We're looking for answers to some of the questions many women without children seem to have and create even more community amongst us fruit-bearers.

In Part 2, I am going to share a great conversation with Ladies Lotto's very own media and branding master, Mayor Marissa Spano who has a sparkling 22-month old daughter, Isabella (both beauties are in the photo above). Listen in!

LLMM: Tell me about your offspring and how everything has been going as a mama?
Marissa: Isabella Skye dominates my world and I couldn't be happier with my chosen role. Watching her spirit grow and observing her as she chooses traits and moods is so inspiring. As a mother, I float in and out of thoughts from my own youth and faded memories of my mom who I lost at 15, so it's been a really spiritual journey...and my hardest job yet!

LLMM: Hardest job yet? I hear ya! What sticks out to you as being challenging about the role?
Marissa: The biggest challenge is balancing. It's creating a harmony between all the "hats" you wear and centering each moment around integrity, whether it's business or personal. The mommy hat is by far the most important to me so naturally, for other items to be of interest, they have to be truly special.

LLMM: And what other interests, professionally, do you spend your time on? Do they work well with the kind of fam-life you are wanting?
Marissa: Most of the work I do now consists of creating Brand Campaigns for companies. We work on interactive and multi-sensory campaigns which heavily rely on my creative input. Being on the computer 15hrs a day working on proposals has a down side. I am re-incorporating daily sun salutations and meditation which will only propel my personal success. I definitely feel like things are organically falling into place. I am literally growing with my daughter.

LLMM: That's amazing! It sounds like you are constantly striving for and achieving balance. How much would you say your lifestyle has changed since you entered motherhood (or pregnancy)?
Marissa: It definitely started at pregnancy! I have had to exist with less sleep and be more mindful of my body than ever before. My lifestyle has definitely taken a 180 degree turn! In my younger years, I was out each night at parties. Now, I am lucky if I get a babysitter for the International Emmy's this year. Even when I do go out now, part of me stays home with Bella! It's a challenge to ever be present when I am not around her...it's like you're always preoccupied with your child's well-being.

Peak-a-boo, Isabella!

LLMM: Do you ever have feelings of guilt turning down various functions, events or meetings?
Marissa: Hmmm, "guilt", no. The time I spend at home if not out is in our media room. It's all about knowing what's going on in the digital and TV worlds, so I invest myself into research when missing out on the fun stuff, well...researching is actually fun for me.

LLMM: Do you have any advice for women without children who are searching for the perfect time to have them?
Marissa: I think it's always the perfect time to have children because most women will never voluntarily say "this is the perfect time". It's the perfect time when they come...when they just kinda show up. Or if you want to get stoic about it...the perfect time is when you've reached a satisfying level in your career where you can pick back up in a couple of years, or maintain both from the get-go. It's also more importantly about finding the right partner to RAISE a child with, not just someone who you love.

LLMM: Okay last question! What are you and Isabella's top three favorite activities?
Marissa: 1.) Down Dog, 2.) Art, specifically drawing Elmo, 3.) Singing, she's mastered "Happy Bday" as of yesterday which was her daddy's bday.

Taking It to the Root of the Matter!

Following in the ancients footsteps, eating seasonally keeps our bodies in sync with nature’s rhythms. Fresh greens poked out in the spring, fruit ripened in summer, root veggies got dug up in fall, and animal protein provided warmth in winter.

Modern conveniences have put us out of sync with the usual rhythms of nature, and in turn, leaves us susceptible to illness, low energy and bad moods. Giving your body the food that is naturally available during different seasons can actually have a big impact on your health.

Idea: Incorporate at least one seasonal item into your diet each week, you can ask what's seasonal at your local market, or go to farmer's market.

Here is a list of season fall bearings:

Bushmills USA "Since Way Back" Party at Bunker

The promise of free liquor is always a major reason to come out and when we were invited to Bushmills USA’s “Since Way Back” party at Bunker, we definitely knew we’d be in attendance. The “Since Way Back” event series is a way for Bushmills to connect with their NYC friends. Bushmills is all about friendship. “It’s an open and friendly kind of whiskey. We don’t take ourselves too seriously. Some whiskeys have too many rules and regulations,” Master Distiller, Colum Egan mentions of Bushmills’ distinctiveness.

As an homage to the very friendship that Bushmills represents, they’re teaming up with five groups of successful New York City artists and entrepreneurs and their friends for the “Since Way Back” party series. These cultural influencers are  Chromeo, photographer Kai Regan, DJ A-Trak, Nick Catchdubs, and Dust La Rock of Fool's Gold, Jonathan Galkin and Justin Miller of DFA Records, and Chris Isenberg, founder of No Mas.

At the most recent “Since Way Back” event at Bunker in NYC, Justin Miller of DFA and also part of the “Since Way Back” campaign and Morgan Collett (of Saturdays NYC) DJ’ed and kept the crowd swaying--or maybe that was the free Bushmills?! There was also a photo booth setup, complete with fun props to take snazzy keepsakes. I managed to snag a photo with Colum! The best part of the evening--other than the mini burgers and cake was getting to see S. Carey of Bon Iver perform!

Bushmills Irish Whiskey is an iconic brand. It’s one of the oldest names in whiskey and liquor in general. Dating all the way back to 1608 and hundreds of years of perfected their taste, Bushmills is like no other.

“Bushmills is famous for a chocolatey flavor. Believe it or not, but if you take a little bit of chocolate, put it in your mouth and drink some Bushmills, you’ll love it!” Colum explained. This is the man behind the brand. His job is to make sure that all things run smoothly and that the taste is up to par. Bushmills is an age-old brand, but definitely keeps its proverbial finger on the pulse of everything modern and now. “The world is changing so quickly now and Bushmills is more of a constant; I have to make sure the whiskey we’re making is the same today that it was 50 years ago,” Colum enlightens us.

Being that this is Ladies Lotto and we’re talking whiskey (a masculine drink), no worries ladies, Colum says that Bushmills transcends sex. “If you want to try whiskey, there’s no better whiskey to get into than Bushmills. There’s nothing smoother,” Colum explains. “Bushmills breaks down a lot of barriers that people have in their minds. In general, whiskey has a misconception that it’s very harsh and Bushmills is different. When you taste it, it’s smooth and very approachable. It’s friendly. Anyone that tries it is amazed.”

Books, Booze and Burlesque! Oh My! Faery Tale Book Launch Event

On Thursday, November 11th, join author Signe Pike, for an evening of cocktails, conversation and a little mystical misbehaving. Hear a reading from her book “Faery Tale” then make a little magic of your own, while sipping on delicious drinks at her after party at the Bubble Lounge in Tribeca and sponsored by Voli Vodka.
A little about Faery Tale:
Manhattan book editor Signe Pike was fully immersed in the hustle and chaos of every day city life—but as she passed the man urinating on her stoop, or got shoved by a fellow New Yorker battling for a taxi, she couldn't help but wonder—where had all the magic gone? As a child, Signe would walk the woods of Ithaca, NY with her father—searching for fairies. It took his tragic and unexpected death to make her realize that she'd not only lost her childlike sense of wonderment in the world around her, she was utterly battered and disillusioned from the corporate grind. Figuring if she could believe once more in faeries, she could believe in anything, Signe abandoned her NYC publishing life --embarking on a journey across the globe to all the places where fairies were found in myth and folklore, in hopes of rekindling her childhood spark of enchantment. Her travels would take her from Mexico and Manhattan to England, Ireland, Scotland and New York as she explored dark glens, abandoned forests, ancient sacred sites and dimly lit local pubs, interviewing the colorful characters she encounters who take fairy-hunting very seriously.
As Signe puts it: “I was going to find the goddamn fairies.”

On Heavy Rotation: Anika

Your latest music search is over. I'm not a huge fan of jumping on to just any bandwagon, I'm a skeptic when an artist lands on every other music blog in existence. When Portishead's Geoff Barrow teamed up with singer Anika, I jumped on without regret. The collaboration will satisfy any llady with a taste for 60's girl groups, dub, punk and funk. Sounds like a weird combo, right? Well, call it a throw back to 99 Records or NY 80's No Wave, Anika's self-titled album from Stones Throw is for YOU.

This is Why We do It! A BGirls Perspective

In this day and age, its is rare for us to be able to feel something is our life’s work or to feel we cannot rest until our passion project has come to fruition.  Those of us in the “visionary” category, stray off the beaten path, into our own idealist oblivion, never able to cash in on the “timing” or the moment.

But deep inside of us is this unsettling feeling that until we see it thru to the home plate, we are not truly fulfilling our destiny.

I have had my dry spells, back against the wall, with everyone telling me to try something “else”. But when its your life’s work, and destiny to do something, you do it, thru the good and bad moments. What if Jesus just decided to throw in the towel? Or if Martin Luther Kings just decided to ride the bus?

For me it’s seeing the lifestyle movement of Bboying and Bgirling fully actualized, in a similar fashion to skateboarding. Though folks think it is underground, it is actually a worldwide expression now found in almost every country in the world.

Why? Because it speaks to the child inside of us who wants to get dirty, throw our bodies on the ground, get really good and battle the world, man, woman and child. Somehow by doing this we are rebelling against the regularity of the world, and living via our soul. This translates beyond boundaries of race, class, and gender.

All my business ventures are somehow connected to the Bboy/Bgirl movement. Whether its my after school program called Hip-Hop 101, or soon to be released all natural energy drink called Jump Street, a TV show about Bboy/Bgirl lifestyle scene, or the event that set it all in motion called The Bboy Summit.

This dynamic, passion fueled, ego-based movement has often been misunderstood as being old school, or “played out”, with everyone lamenting, “yeah, I use to do that”. No, you didn’t, trust me.. not like this anyway.
Props to everyone living their dream.

Synonymous with appeal, SENA is an NYC-based contemporary women's line bearing fine knits and luxe basics that offer high-fashion detailing and a very attractive fit.

The entire line is 100% developed and produced in the heart of the Garment District in New York City. Adamant to keep the Garment District and Fashion in New York City alive, all SENA care labels read 100% NYC. Now that's praiseworthy!

Muji Goes App Shit Crazy

Japanese retailer Muji has given non iPad users another reason to hate on that revolutionary little tablet. They've just released an app suite for the iPad and one lone app compatible with a few other Apple gadgets. Like the brick and mortar stores, the apps are not about frills -- they're purely functional. However, this doesn't mean you can't have any fun or indulge a bit. You're definitely one step closer to a paper-less environment with these super functional and stylish apps:
  • Muji Calendar (Free; iPad only) - Easy to use and syncs with your Google Calendar. Drag and drop to schedule events.
  • Muji Notebook ($3.99 USD; iPad only) - Draw freehand and enter typed data. On top of it all it recognizes your handwriting. It's a big step up from the Palm Zire (yup, I still have mine). If you're in a sharing is caring mood, feel free to email your notebook to friends.
  • Muji to Go ($3.99 USD; iPad only) - Several useful tools for the lady or dude on the go rolled in one; weather, world clock, calculator and Forex -- because you may need to turn that chedda' into brie. There's no bouncing from one app to another; toggle between them with the stroke of a finger. Muji apparel and other goods are suggested based on the app module you're using.
  • Muji Apparel Catalog (Free; iPhone, iPad & iPod Touch) Who cares if it's in Japanese? Now's a great time to learn with Rosetta Stone. Just kidding, at least you can look at the photos of Muji's new items.
Click the individual links above to learn more about, and to purchase each app.

Modern Mamahood: Eat Like a Baby!

With so many books and "experts" out there telling us the newest craze toward achieving nutritional perfection, it can be hard to navigate through it all. I would know because it took 15 months after Regina Jade was born to lose the 50lb of baby-weight that I packed on thanks to cravings like red velvet cupcakes and McFlurries!

Anyway, when it comes to finding reliable nutritional standards, I've realized we needn't look much further than the nutritional guidelines for feeding a baby. Their pure little bodies require and deserve only the best, so looking at what and how they are eating clues us into the direction we should be headed...all crazes, gimmicks, latest research and b.s. aside.

Fruits + Veggies:
How Baby Eats - All baby first-foods are pureed vegetables and fruit.
What We Learn - Eat a bunch of fruits and vegetables, their maxed out nutrients ward off disease and keep the scale low.

Eat When Hungry:
How Baby Eats - If a baby isn't very hungry, they don't eat a lot. It's that simple. Some days they will grub down, other days they don't seem to want anything.
What We Learn - Start listening to your body and respond to its real needs; if you're not super hungry for dinner one day, then don't eat a ton.

No Crappy Food:
How Baby Eats - No one in their right mind would give a baby things like pepperoni, soda, pixi stix, easy-cheese, gummy worms or Doritos. That's because they are loaded with processed food grossness and toxic ingredients.
What We Learn - Avoid eating processed foods whenever possible. The research that has come out about all the disguised toxins packed into ingredient lists and the dangerous yet ever-present high-fructose corn-syrup, is staggering and disgusting.

So there you have it, eat like a baby and you should be on your way to supreme health. It's basically the nutritional plan I've been dedicated to in a nutshell and I think it holds a lot of weight. I wouldn't go as far as saying I've ever sat down with a jar of babyfood, but I'll admit I've been known to snack on Cheerios.
