On Heavy Rotation: Anika

Your latest music search is over. I'm not a huge fan of jumping on to just any bandwagon, I'm a skeptic when an artist lands on every other music blog in existence. When Portishead's Geoff Barrow teamed up with singer Anika, I jumped on without regret. The collaboration will satisfy any llady with a taste for 60's girl groups, dub, punk and funk. Sounds like a weird combo, right? Well, call it a throw back to 99 Records or NY 80's No Wave, Anika's self-titled album from Stones Throw is for YOU.

Untypical Girl: Ari Up

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyXGblps64M

Typical Girls - The Slits

By now many of you have heard of the recent passing of The Slits' lead singer Ari Up.

She was not only a "shero" but a friend. She served as an inspiration and a teacher to generations of women. Without Ari Up there would be no Madonna, there would be no Kathleen Hanna, there would be no Santogold, no MIA.

As girls we grow up within the constrains of society. We must conform to the standards of society governed by men, by the media, by the marketers who want to sell us beauty and fashion products so that we can become "typical girls". But Ari, born Ariane Forster in Munich, was never going to be that typical girl.

Ari Up was a revolutionary genius. At the tender age of 14 she was fronting an all female punk band. As Jon Savage wrote today " No one had seen young women behave like this on stage: enacting a flagrant parody of sexuality, at the same time seemingly tougher and more disturbing than the other (male) groups on the bill."

Ari Up is one of the very few women I have encountered with truly a free spirit, she worked on her own time line and frankly, she lived her life without fear. I've spoken with people in Brooklyn, in LA and as far away as Tokyo who are in a state of grief from her passing. She touched so many lives and really shined a light upon us all.

We've covered Ari Up many times on Ladies Lotto's blog and we were lucky enough to have her speak at a Ladies Lotto meeting a couple of years back. If you were able to attend that event, you know how powerful she was.

She will be missed very much and her memory will never be forgotten.

Here is a link to past posts as well as the gallery of photos of her explosive energy she brought to that event.

Herstory: Nikki Corvette

Girls like me were born to rock n roll - Nikki Corvette

You're So Young & Crazy - Nikki & The Corvettes

All this talk about The Runaways movie (the all female band led by Joan Jett), got me thinking about power pop and the amazing Nikki Corvette.

Nikki Corvette, hailing from Detroit, fronted the band, Nikki & The Corvettes back when women in music were more likely to play acoustic guitar & sing with a breathy whisper. Back then, Nikki didn't know she was inventing the girl rock & bubblegum punk genres (which really didn't take off until the 90's with bands like The Donna's & The Bobbyteens). "They had a sound somewhere between the Go-go's and the Ramones with bubblegum teenage libido maxed out with a dose of the Shangri Las. Led by a "new wave Betty Boop," to quote one review, this power group offered sounds and sex appeal. " states Punkmodpop.free.fr

Music Makes the Ladies Come Together

image from Molly's facebook page

Music is pervasive and apart of daily culture. That's why Ladies Lotto thought it'd be fun to put together July events surrounding the incredible women who are making moves in the music industry (in various capacities).

We asked Molly Neuman to speak in NYC on July 29th.

Originally from Washington, DC, Molly Neuman began her career in music as the drummer for the seminal riot girl band Bratmobile (ZOMG!!!). After graduating from The Evergreen State College in 1992, she moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and began to work at Lookout Records in 1994. In 1997 she became a partner and has been instrumental in the signing and development of such artists as The Donnas, Pretty Girls Make Graves, Ted Leo/Pharmacists among many others.

In 2001 she co founded Indivision Management, an artist management company dedicated to preserving artists autonomy in their careers while providing them with complete management services.

Molly continues to play music with friends because this is what keeps her heart light. She is currently based in New York City.

Molly will be speaking at Ladies Lotto's next event. SAVE THE DATE NY: JULY 29th!

More info to come this week about our other 2 guest speakers in NYC + other guest speakers in other cities...

Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains

Film Comment Selects screening:

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains

Tonight!
Wed Feb 25 at 8:30
@ Lincoln Center

Before anyone had heard of Diane Lane or Laura Dern, the two teen actresses put on flaming eye shadow and fishnet stockings to star in this backstage satire, a valentine to the faded glory of punk. Anticipating Riot Grrrl by a decade, the story chronicles the rise and fall of an all-female band, whose members hide their lack of talent and tone-deaf lead singer behind bursts of angst and energy. With veteran record producer Lou Adler directing and members of The Sex Pistols and The Clash dropping in for cameos, this late-night cable classic awaits rediscovery as an essential post-punk time capsule.

Followed by a post-punk afterparty with DJs Dan Selzer (Acute Records) & Aileen Brophy (Corita).

Soldier, Soldier

More and more US soldiers returning from combat are committing suicide and MURDER at alarmingly high rates. Salon.com launched an investigative report uncovering the habitual mistreatment behind these preventable deaths. Obama wants to bring back a record number of soldiers, which does raise the question: how is the US government prepared to respond to their needs? Take a look at the article on Salon.com here.

Added bonus, English Punk/New Wave band Spizzenergi's 1979 single Soldier Soldier. Ignore the visuals, listen to the audio...

Lux Interior

RIP Lux Interior. As lead singer of one of the most influential bands of the past 30 years, The Cramps, he will be greatly missed. Acts like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The White Stripes & Jon Spencer Blues Explosion to name a few, would have never seen the light of day without his cross dressing, hyper sexual, psychobilly antics. Our hearts go out to life time partner & Cramps guitarist Poison Ivy.

Read a great article about The Cramps and Lux Interior here.

Who the Eff is Judy Nylon?

For those of you who came to LLNY's meeting at Socialista, it was revolutionary! One of the surprise guests was cultural icon Judy Nylon. Judy grew up amongst Boston Irish in the fifties, became an ex-pat in London in 1971 and was one of only four Americans included in the first days of British punk. Hence her connection to Ari Up. In terms of cultural significance, she has been ranked with Patti Smith, The Raincoats, Chrissie Hynde, of The Pretenders, The Slits, Lydia Lunch, Siouxsie of Siouxsie and the Banshees and even Nico. Her motto remains "Live Now, Wise Up and Die Well".

More on Judy Nylon here.
