8 bikes suitable for fashionistas

I'm a huge proponent of public transport, ride shares, car pooling and anything else that reduces the number of cars on the road and carbon in our skies (and lungs)... and since I learned how to ride a bike (last year!) I've been opting to ride it instead of the subway as much as possible.

As much as I love my little rusty vintage wheels, they don't exactly hold a candle to these gems, posted on Treehugger today. I'm starting a piggy bank to save up for the Hermes version. Now if only they made an appropriate matching helmet!

Tap It:

Created in 2008, TapIt is a network of cafes and eateries across New York City that volunteer as partners to provide clean drinking water to those who carry their own reusable bottle. TapIt users can find partner locations on TapIt’s website, mobile website, and iPhone Application (called TapIt Water, available from the App Store). “I was so frustrated that in order to get a drink of water when I was out in the city, I had to purchase a bottle of it. I was eager to find a way to both save on the expense and reduce the waste that comes from single serve plastic bottles,” says TapIt founder Kylie Harper. “I am thrilled that so many local eateries have volunteered to partner with TapIt and provide clean drinking water to the public."

In the past 5 months, TapIt has grown to include over 200 local cafes and eateries in New York City. Partners and users help to clean up communities by reducing waste from plastic bottles that end up in landfills and streets. And users are able to decrease their individual carbon footprint by reducing their reliance on bottled water while saving money. In fact, users could save up to $500 per year if they were to use TapIt instead of buying a bottle of water each day.

July/Music Spotlight Part I

In preparation for the Ladies Lotto New York July/Music conference on Wednesday, July 29th, I'd like to introduce you to our featured panelists. First up, we have Karena Cameron of Nylon Studios.

Karena Cameron is an Australian in New York with a colorful career spanning music, advertising, media and fashion.

From 2000, Karena worked as the Promotions Manager at seminal youth radio broadcaster Kiss FM and in '02 donned the hat of Marketing and PR Manager at indie record label and distributor Stomp Entertainment. A hiatus in the rag trade followed for the next two years where she specialized in the creation of seasonal brand campaigns and producing runway shows for Fashion Weeks' around the globe. Despite the exponential growth of her wardrobe, her passion for all things musical lured her back into the industry.

In 2005, Karena joined label giant Sony BMG as Marketing Manager. It was a very interesting time to be involved with a major label during this time - essentially at the height of the record industry's fall - but it was probably the most rousing in terms of evolution. Strategy re-entered the mind-set of marketing as did a need to off-set traditionally high marketing costs with external funding. OPM (other peoples money) became key to getting your artist's music heard, so while producing video clips, album artwork and working on promotional tours, Karena worked on several key commercial rights deals linking brand and bands.

In 2007, Karena joined Nylon Studios and relocated to New York to set up their US operation. Nylon is a music production boutique specializing in original composition, licensing and music content for brands. To date, the company has been a great success (particularly by recession standards) with a continual increase in client base and areas of specialization. To wrap 2009, Karena plans to launch a dot com (surprisingly non-music related) as a small side-project and continue spreading the Nylon word throughout New York.

Check out Nylon Studios to see examples of their work!

And of course make sure to hit up the July conference at the Cornichon Cafe in Brooklyn, at 7 pm!

Hustle, hustle, grind, grind...

Unless you've been under a rock, you've noticed that physical music sales have taken a major nosedive in the past 5 years. The last of the Mohicans, Virgin Megastore closed their doors in Union Square location here in NYC. Clearly, major record labels are hurting. But when a door closes, a window opens. Brothers and sisters are doin' it for themselves. Partnering with smaller firms, and sharing in the profits provides almost complete artistic control and of course, greater profits. Despite the dire forecast from industry bigwigs, this actually seems like a really exciting time for artists. Read more in this really interesting piece on The New York Times.

Grow your own building

I've been very impressed with my little self this summer, I set out to grow a mini garden on my fire escape and I now have a lush space with tomatoes, kale, spinach, plenty of herbs and even a flowering vine. But then I read this on Treehugger today and I'm green with envy (pardon the pun).

German architect Ferdinand Ludwig is creating a whole new branch of architecture: he grows buildings. Ludwig and fellow architects, Oliver Storz and Hannes Schwertfeger, call their new specialty "building botany." As part of this the three men are building structures made from plants as well as studying the elasticity of plane trees and examining how effectively willows can grow around steel pipes at the University of Stuttgart's Institute of Basics in Modern Architectural Design.

"The basic rule is this: All forces pass through the wood, from top to bottom," Schwertfeger explains. And the trio has already built their first structures. For example on Lake Constance where a group of willows surround a metal walkway. And in the Bavarian Forest, trees form a "diagonal support frame" for a bird watching station. And now the pioneers are planning to build a "green room" in downtown Stuttgart. The project, dubbed "Satellite," will consist of a 120-square-meter (1,290-square-foot) pavilion for exhibitions and concerts.

It would be great if we saw some of these buildings "sprout" up around Williamsburg instead of the metal monstrosities that are destroying our landscape.

Take Part in the Girl Effect...

Picture 4

Coming out of the 6th grade, I was too old for day camp and too young for a job. Thankfully a friend suggested an initiative called The Eureka Teen Achievement Program, a summer camp dedicated to the empowerment and academic encouragement of young women. I spent four summers there, and it was a life-changing experience to know that someone believed that I could do whatever I chose. That program unfortunately is now defunct, but I am SO excited to hear about the Girl Effect. This program, founded by Nike, takes this ideology several steps further. The idea is that if we can raise the standard of living for girls around the world, girls can and WILL be a major agent for change in our global society. Can't argue with that notion! 5 in 1: A New Kind of Boutique for a Slow-Fashion Nation

I know you've all heard me promote 5 in 1 before, but thought I'd share a recent post in
Treehugger, explaining a little more about the store's concept.

Fueled by a faltering economy, a desire to rein in the frenetic pace of senseless spending, and the spirit of reinvention, Brooklyn design collective/boutique
5 in 1 recently relaunched with a decidedly innovative twist: a weekend shopping experience with the designers themselves.

Open only Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, 5 in 1 is run by eight local designers, including Helena Fredriksson of
H.Fredriksson, Caroline Priebe of ULURU, Mary Meyer of Mary Meyer Clothing, and Susan Domelsmith of Dirty Librarian Chains.

In lieu of hired shop clerks, each of the designers has to man the shop one full weekend every six to eight weeks, although they get to decide what "work" actually involves, whether it's one-on-one tête-à-têtes with clients, trunk shows, sample sales, or something more experimental.

"The 5 in 1 retail space gives designers an opportunity to work together, share resources, experiment and give the customer a personal and curated shopping experience," Ariell Ilunga, the group's spokeswoman, tells TreeHugger. "A 5 in 1 customer is able to engage in conversation with the designer about their process, materials, fit, concept, and cost. These sort of exchanges are not only good for the business but nourish them as artists personally, creatively, and emotionally."

Here Comes the Hotstepper...

Bow Tie1

Us Lladies love our heels. We're dashing to and from cabs, in and out of restaurants...dropping it like it's hot. By the end of the night, the dogs are barking. Locating a well designed, sexy and comfortable pair of heels is like finding a unicorn. Well, I guess I'll be rolling up to work on a horse-like mystical creature tomorrow, because we've discovered Burju Shoes.

Burju Perez, a dancer/choreographer and studio owner, found herself in the same quandary as us non-pros during a night out on the town. In the battle between comfy versus cute, cute won hands down. So, she decided to merge the two once and for all, using dance shoe technology along with sleek styling. The results are wallet-friendly styles like the Cross Over and Bow Tie, which at first glance would have no trouble blending in with your Steve Madden's.

Check out BurjuShoes.com to see what all the fuss is about!

Music Makes the Ladies Come Together

image from Molly's facebook page

Music is pervasive and apart of daily culture. That's why Ladies Lotto thought it'd be fun to put together July events surrounding the incredible women who are making moves in the music industry (in various capacities).

We asked Molly Neuman to speak in NYC on July 29th.

Originally from Washington, DC, Molly Neuman began her career in music as the drummer for the seminal riot girl band Bratmobile (ZOMG!!!). After graduating from The Evergreen State College in 1992, she moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and began to work at Lookout Records in 1994. In 1997 she became a partner and has been instrumental in the signing and development of such artists as The Donnas, Pretty Girls Make Graves, Ted Leo/Pharmacists among many others.

In 2001 she co founded Indivision Management, an artist management company dedicated to preserving artists autonomy in their careers while providing them with complete management services.

Molly continues to play music with friends because this is what keeps her heart light. She is currently based in New York City.

Molly will be speaking at Ladies Lotto's next event. SAVE THE DATE NY: JULY 29th!

More info to come this week about our other 2 guest speakers in NYC + other guest speakers in other cities...

Seeking Virtual Interns!

I am searching for two virtual interns for Fall 2009.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Help me research cool things.
  • Help me coordinate a variety of projects—which mostly involves contacting artists, brands, scheduling, organizing details.
  • Respond to emails!
  • Writing assignments…both assigned and those based on your own interests.
  • Other stuff that comes up.
  • Workload will be about 8 hours a week.

There is absolutely no pay, but the glory, oh the glory…

If you are interested, email me at natalie@ladieslotto.com with a brief note about why you are interested in being my intern and a quick little resume as well. Please feel free to pass this on to anyone who may be interested.

For a student, I’d be happy to write a letter of recommendation after a successful internship. I’d also be happy to promote projects that the intern may be working on personally.

I will collect resumes until the middle of August and get back to those who I’d like to interview after that. Please note that this is a virtual internship, so your location does not matter, but you must be super self-motivated.

Kusama Moment

Yayoi Kusama moment. Happy Monday.

Hey Sista Sole Sista

Um really...why didn't I think of this!?? After years of event planning, hosting and being fabulous in five inchers (then limping home at the end my fabulous evening ). I'm proud to announce (as if I'd thought of it myself) "Rollasole" out of the UK - a company that fills vending machines with trendy ballet flats that can be your "sole" savior in a pinch. They're sold at clubs in the UK, and I'm all for them coming to this side of the pond to save us all from those nights when fashion sense says yes, but before long the feet say HELL no.

Find these babies on: http://www.rollasole.com/

Your Skin Is Glowing!

LOOKING GOOD (bottom right)
The Philips' looking-good' system is a facial skin care revolution. The unit virtually makes skin care creams and procedures redundant by using the technology of light. The concept involves the use of a base, a skin analyze, a bowl and a cleansing stick which actually diagnoses the state of your skin. Once the stick has analyzed the skin, it assesses the treatment required. Light techniques enable blue lights to heal breakouts, whilst the bowl itself omits red light that rejuvenates and nourishes tired skin. Dr. Brandt there's a new laser in town...!
Checkout the other many uses, (I really think the drawing on the walls thing will be my favorite).

Agnès Varda's 1981 Documentary "Mur murs"

Agnès Varda is one of the world's foremost filmmakers. In 1981 she released "Murs, murs" (walls, walls in French), a documentary about Los Angeles murals.

A note on IMDB explains:

"The French director Agnès Varda spent a couple of different years in Los Angeles, and this particular year produced her documentary "Murs, murs" and her fiction film "Documenteur". The title means "Walls, walls", but also puns with the word "murmurs." Varda located dozens of murals around LA and filmed them. Many of these are gone today, so this is a true documentary, documenting a wonderful aspect of southern Californian visual culture. She interviews the artists, a truly multicultural and multicolored group--and shows the paintings in their urban contexts. One memorable scene shows a mural at Venice Beach with young people dancing in front of it (probably near where their sons and daughters are roller skating or skateboarding now). An enjoyable movie by a European with deep aesthetic appreciation for marvelous, imaginative, colorful imagery that was considered throwaway pop culture at the time. "

Syncopated Sol Power

Once again, CitySol; a music and art festival dedicated to sustainability returns to NYC. Each day Habitat for Artists and Simon Draper -- and artists of his choosing -- will create installations and exhibits to be displayed throughout the event. An array of musical and performance artists will also be on hand to support greener energy initiatives. From hip-hop to punk and electronica; there will be something for every aural fixation.
