Herstory: Lynda Weinman

Lynda Weinman, a Web graphics and design veteran, wrote the very first industry book on Web design, Designing Web Graphics, in 1995. She is a prominent educator and the author of dozens of best-selling books. Weinman was a faculty member at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA, in 1989, and has worked as an animator and motion graphics director in the film special effects industry.

Weinman has worked as a consultant for Adobe, Macromedia, and Microsoft, and has conducted workshops at Disney, Microsoft, Adobe, and Macromedia. She has been a keynote speaker, moderator, and lecturer at numerous design, animation, Web design, and computer-graphics conferences. Weinman and her husband Bruce Heavin co-founded lynda.com in 1995. (via Lynda.com)

Back in undergrad I took a class on how to build a website. This was waaayyy back when most people didn't know what HTML was and when frames were acceptable as the norm. One resource my teacher shared with us (Travis Smith of Variety.com) was LYNDA.COM. Went to Lynda for the web palette below which is a quick reference for changing colors in HTML (again, back when most people weren't using dreamweaver, etc).

The thing about Lynda is that she really is a pioneer in web based graphics and her website has massive reach and influence. Enjoy the resource she provides!

Litter Bugs!

Picture 9
Picture 10
Sisters Rachael Mann and Mackenzie Burdick's story is so inspiring. In less than a year, these ladies have started a cool (and successful) jewelry line called Litter SF. Born when Burdick saw Nicole Richie wearing an elastic headpiece, on a whim they started breaking apart old jewelry and doing a Frankenstein on them. The outcome has been leg straps, shoe chains, and more crazy-cool headpieces. Read more the entire article here and take a peek at more of their stuff at Litter SF

5 in 1: A New Kind of Boutique for a Slow-Fashion Nation

I know you've all heard me promote 5 in 1 before, but thought I'd share a recent post in
Treehugger, explaining a little more about the store's concept.

Fueled by a faltering economy, a desire to rein in the frenetic pace of senseless spending, and the spirit of reinvention, Brooklyn design collective/boutique
5 in 1 recently relaunched with a decidedly innovative twist: a weekend shopping experience with the designers themselves.

Open only Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, 5 in 1 is run by eight local designers, including Helena Fredriksson of
H.Fredriksson, Caroline Priebe of ULURU, Mary Meyer of Mary Meyer Clothing, and Susan Domelsmith of Dirty Librarian Chains.

In lieu of hired shop clerks, each of the designers has to man the shop one full weekend every six to eight weeks, although they get to decide what "work" actually involves, whether it's one-on-one tête-à-têtes with clients, trunk shows, sample sales, or something more experimental.

"The 5 in 1 retail space gives designers an opportunity to work together, share resources, experiment and give the customer a personal and curated shopping experience," Ariell Ilunga, the group's spokeswoman, tells TreeHugger. "A 5 in 1 customer is able to engage in conversation with the designer about their process, materials, fit, concept, and cost. These sort of exchanges are not only good for the business but nourish them as artists personally, creatively, and emotionally."

Flea Bag

Artists and Fleas is a weekly market which provides emerging designers with a place to show their wares, and shopaholics with a place to buy them.

Today, Ladies Lotto New York member Rachel Hill is showcasing bags (including mat bags) from her Lady Jane Designs line alongside Kim of Tiny Hearts.

Stop by to see what other one of a kind goodies you can score. In a world of mass produced items it's nice to have something to call your own.

From Russia With Love

photo courtesy of fashion daily blog

Some girls dream about becoming a princess, others, like Kira Plastinina, dream about becoming a designer. So she did. And at the ripe age of 16 has accomplished what most would hope to do so in a lifetime. With 49 Kira Plastinina stores in Europe, the incredible teenager has opened up 7 stores in the US. DISCLAIMER: Papa Plastinina is a Russian billionaire, making his own fortune off of JUICE.

Regardless of her obvious luck in the socioeconomic sphere, Kira has a drive and determination far beyond her (16 OMG!!) years in the guise of pink and glitter. You can check out a store in Manhattan (594 Broadway) and in LA (116 S. Robertson) amongst others. Or visit her online at http://www.kiraplastinina.us.
