Let It Rain!

A super smart gadget has been designed to save our water and actually make something good out of those dull rainy days. It's called RainDrops by Evan.
This product is designed for collecting rainwater from your roof. You just modify the existing gutter system. The rainwater will store in many standard plastic bottles, you can use it water your garden or washing your hands!
The RainDrops system simply allows people to adapt standard plastic bottles to an existing gutter system to collect rainwater. Read more about it here

Where Fashion Meets Fabulous: Harriet's Alter Ego

For owners Hekima Hapa and Ngozi Odita, Harriet’s is the idea that fashion should be functional. For their faithful following, however, Harriet’s is a way of life. And although each year their line and boutique concept continually evolves, Harriet’s approach has remained unconventionally classic. A testament to time well spent and design well done.
Harriet’s Alter Ego, truly a lifestyle brand where fashion imitates life.
Harriet's supports clean water in Africa, and you should too! Click here!
A (Much Needed) Peace Treaty

Friends Farah Malik and Dana Arbib created A Peace Treaty using the juxtaposition of their differing backgrounds (Malik is a Pakistani Muslim and Arbib a Libyan Jew) and their shared interest in high-fashion and ancient craftsmanship. It is an evolving collection aimed at creating beautiful, ethically produced, artisan-level accessories and apparel.
We are so excited to have this exquisite stole shown above at our Charity Water Auction! It has red, green, clementine, purple, and blue stripes with silver tila yarn detail. It measures 80x42" and is hand-loomed in 100% cotton.

Facts about Ethiopia
There are more people in Ethiopia without clean water than any other country in Africa. There are 70+ million people living in the country, and 75% of the population lacks access to safe, clean drinking water.
Only one in every four people in Ethiopia have access to clean water while just 13 percent have access to basic sanitation.
Collecting water is a back-breaking chore. Many women walk up to 3 hours, carrying 40-pound jerry cans filled with polluted water that is likely to make them sick.
Many girls never get an opportunity to go to school because the responsibility of collecting water takes precedence.
The country’s persistently low rainfall is a major factor in the extreme poverty that exists in rural areas as well as periodic famines that affect millions of people.
These facts were taken from charity: water's website, please see for yourself.

Don't be a Pill

Don't wanna resort to flushing or tossing pills you don't need? Donate them to Madre's Helping Hands - a human rights organization that donates unused meds to people who need them in developing countries. Just grab what you've got (over-the-counter antihistamines or Rxs like insulin and penicillin - check out the full wish list); make sure everything's sealed, labeled, and at least 6 months from expiration; and drop it off at MHH's Chelsea location. Not putting them into our water stream keeps us from drinking prescription cocktails (trace amounts of pharmaceuticals end up in our taps because treatment plants can't filter 'em out). Go before November 25, in time for MHH's shipment to Nicaragua.
Madre's Helping Hands, drop off at 121 W. 27th St., #301, b/t Sixth and Seventh Aves. (212-627-0444). Check out the latest Daily Tip on flushing meds.

The Play Pump

Do you think M.I.A. & Afrikan Boy know about this?
The PlayPump is an incredibly simple but effective invention that helps people in Africa access clean drinking water. While children are playing on a merry-go-round up to 1,400 liters of clean water can be pumped into a tank that stands seven meters above the ground. The tank’s walls are used to place ad billboards while two sides are reserved for educational messages.
The time is now! A child dies of a water-related illness every 15 seconds. Last fall PlayPumps International launched a $60 million, three-year campaign to bring the benefits of clean drinking water to up to 10 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa. We are one-third of the way to meeting this important goal.
Someone call up M.I.A., tell her to stop bitching about "immigrants" and actually put her money where her mouth is.
To make a donation, please check out the website.
