Above: Bowers Museum in Santa Ana. Below: LA County Museum of Art in LA.

The Sex Workers' Art Show Tour is coming to your town!

L-R: The World Famous *BOB*, Keva I. Lee, Kirk Read

The Sex Workers' Art Show Tour is coming to your town!

The show is an eye-popping evening of visual and performance art created by people who work in the sex industry to dispel the myth that they are anything short of artists, innovators, and geniuses!

The wildly successful cabaret-style show is hitting the road again, bringing audiences a blend of spoken word, music, drag, burlesque, and multimedia performance art. Intelligent and hot, disturbing and hilarious, the performances offer a wide range of perspectives on sex work, from celebration of prostitutes' rights and sex-positivity to views from the darker sides of the industry.

This year's incredible lineup of performers includes international burlesque sensation and winner of the “Best Body in Burlesque” award, Miss Dirty Martini; infamous feminist author of I Love Dick Chris Kraus; award-winning author of the coming-out memoir How I Learned to Snap, Kirk Read; porn star and writer Lorelei Lee; performance artist and comic queen of cleavage The World Famous *BOB*; performer and musical theatre mutineer Erin Markey; fierce activist and rapper Tre Vasquez; internationally infamous drag-subverter Krylon Superstar; dominatrix and destroyer of Asian feminine mythology Keva I. Lee; and tour founder and director Annie Oakley.

Special guest at select locations: platinum-selling hip-hop queen Trina! WHAT!??? The baddest bitch is on board?

The show includes people from all areas of the sex industry: strippers, prostitutes, dommes, film stars, phone sex operators, internet models, etc. It smashes traditional stereotypes and moves beyond "positive" and "negative" into a fuller articulation of the complicated ways sex workers experience their jobs and their lives. The Sex Workers' Art Show entertains, arouses, and amazes while simultaneously offering scathing and insightful commentary on notions of class, race, gender, labor and sexuality!

"The Sex Workers' Art Show is not simply a display of those in the sex industry... but an active force in articulating, shaping, and contesting the meaning of the identity "sex worker" in the public sphere" --Theatre Journal

"Annie Oakley doesn't need a gun. She's armed with fierce creativity, political passion, big brains and exquisite sexiness. As the Sex Workers' Art Show's director, Oakley leads a brilliant crew which serves up whore culture at its most delicious and satisfying."
--Annie Sprinkle, Phd

The Play Pump

Do you think M.I.A. & Afrikan Boy know about this?

The PlayPump is an incredibly simple but effective invention that helps people in Africa access clean drinking water. While children are playing on a merry-go-round up to 1,400 liters of clean water can be pumped into a tank that stands seven meters above the ground. The tank’s walls are used to place ad billboards while two sides are reserved for educational messages.

The time is now! A child dies of a water-related illness every 15 seconds. Last fall PlayPumps International launched a $60 million, three-year campaign to bring the benefits of clean drinking water to up to 10 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa. We are one-third of the way to meeting this important goal.

Someone call up M.I.A., tell her to stop bitching about "immigrants" and actually put her money where her mouth is.

To make a donation, please check out the website.

Numero# @ The Knitting Factory!!!!!

Numero#, like the number one musicians to keep in your radar in 2008, are coming straight from Montreal to the Knitting Factory in NYC on 1/21/08! These electrifying, take it with a grain of salt and dance your ass off pop music crowd pleasers are gracing The States with the most outrageously guilt free pop music (perhaps the that certain je n'sais quo adds to their charm either way production is simple yet genius)

Check them out on 1/21/08 along with DJ set from LL's own Miss Jubilee M.A.!

Free admission via www.going.com/ladecadanse

Check out this small excerpt from the Montreal Mirror and you'll get the gist

“We share a love of pop,” says Rocipon. “It’s true that Pierre has a trip hop background, and likes listening to current pop production, to analyze it. But there’s certainly no critique, no investigation of anything—because everyone knows it’s artificial. It’s more that we use pop as a medium for making ourselves laugh. What we found funny was inventing pop star personas when we aren’t pop stars.

“We also wanted to show something to our generation—that it’s not that complicated. We don’t have the big, sick production, but overall, a pop project, finally, isn’t as inaccessible as all that. We wanted to show that two very ordinary people can arrive with a formula, with rather disposable pop songs, and make it work.”

Another Delicious Recipe from Chloe Jo

RECIPES OF THE WEEK:

*Chloe's Warm-in-the-tummy, virtually fat-free, fast and tasty Succotash *

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 cups fresh lima beans (about 1 pound) , or a container of frozen lima beans
  • 4 cups fresh corn cut from cob (about 6 ears) , or a container of frozen corn
  • 3 tablespoons of Braggs liquid Amino Acids (like soy sauce, but better, at every health food store – and SO good for you!)
  • Lotsa pepper
  • A container of pureed frozen squash, or fresh cut into small pieces (there's the rub!)

PREPARATION:

Toss it all in boiling water about 15 minutes or till almost tender; mix well. Cook over low heat, stirring frequently, 7 to 10 minutes, or until corn is done. Lazy ass option – stick it all in the microwave, stir in brags and peps, and you are so fed.

Happy New Year Ladies!
xo - Ladies Lotto

MEMBER OF THE MONTH - January 2008

Rene Levy
Brooklyn, NY

Rene grew up in North Miami & Jamaica. As a full-time student, full-time employed Make-Up Artist, Event Planner & Ladies Lotto NY's Meeting Coordinator you could say Rene's a little busy. She's been in the service industry ever since she could smile. Helping with the family business at a young age gave her a drive that could not be taught, only nurtured. This is what started a certain work ethic that can only be described as dedicated.

Previous to her move to New York over 5 years ago, Rene ran a field marketing team geared towards the urban music scene. Her clients included but were not limited to Rawcus Records, Electra Records & Rough World Entertainment. During that time she landed a well coveted job assisting a major make up artist (we don't drop names) on the set of music videos, from there she has blossomed into the creative genius she is today. Rene kept a hand in the service industry as a bartender or server to maintain between projects. She is known to be resourceful and a great proactive problem solver - always on top of the game. She takes pride in being a fast learner and thinking one step ahead. She currently juggles motherhood while venturing out into event planning along with pursuing her B.A. in advertising.

Side note: If not for Rene's dedication to Ladies Lotto NY, we'd be in some serious trouble! So thank you so much for your hard work Rene! xo

To nominate a Member of the Month, please email: giovannah@ladieslotto.com with a picture and bio.
