Ladies Lotto - Los Angeles November Meeting

Even though our guest speaker failed to materialize the latest meeting was still a solid success since it gave the attending ladies time for a real group discussion instead of just brief socializing snatched before and after the customary guest speaker.

At this meeting each lady was able to tell where she was in her life and if she knew where she wanted to be heading. Even those unsure of their immediate direction were able to say that they currently experienced themselves in a positive and healthy place. Not to make it sound like a Kumbaya moment, but it was touching to hear the intimate feelings and experiences of so many that had never, until that evening, been widely shared. And yes, this LL-LA meeting had some definite waterworks. The LA ladies sure know how to have a good time!

Our meeting was held at "Canvas Los Angeles" which is dedicated to showcasing the best and brightest art from within the global tattoo community. With a large group of ladies talking, we kinda went overtime. Fortunately the owner was very understanding. He's got a lot of great merchandise. Check out his shop next time you're in the neighborhood. http://www.canvasla.com/

We were sponsored by Honest Beverages. Their "Honest Ade" is a new line of refreshing organic thirst quenchers. The representative, also a women, was able not only to participate in the discussions but, apparently, to receive some motivational inspiration herself. http://www.honesttea.com/

Spitting 'Till They Shame You

A good friend once said if he ever became a woman he'd be Jean Grae. Her no apologies style has given our generation some of the most authentic hip hop to date. Always at the forefront of women's issues, Jean's songs are narratives every lady can relate to or at least respect.

In Jean's latest video for "My Story" aka "Spitting 'Till They Shame You" she addresses the issues facing unwanted teenage pregnancy, choice and post-abortion trauma. A reality that many face yet what are real abortion statistics*?
  • The number of abortions in the US has steadily decreased over the past two decades.
  • Fifty percent of U.S. women obtaining abortions are younger than 25: Women aged 20–24 obtain 33% of all abortions, and teenagers obtain 17%.
  • Thirty-seven percent of abortions occur to black women, 34% to non-Hispanic white women, 22% to Hispanic women and 8% to women of other races.
  • About 60% of abortions are obtained by women who have one or more children
With these stats in mind, check out Jean Grae's new video starring Ladies Lotto member Lynette Astaire.

Ladies Lotto - Los Angeles September Meeting

Our guest speaker, Asia One, a world renowned second generation B-boy or more fitting B-girl, has been breaking for 12 years and is the founder of B-boy Summit, No Easy Props Productions and Hip-Hop 101. This community activist has got all the angles covered. Maybe you'd think her discussion would be on Breakdance, it was more about a woman (a single mom to be exact) working hard to bring her projects to fruition. She may have "not made her million yet," nevertheless being able to see all that she has accomplished for her community and the Hip-Hop culture, in which she identifies, she sees the importance of just reaching out and educating the masses.

One of her projects that seemed most dear to her heart is Hip-Hop 101 which offers students' k-6th an opportunity to learn about Hip-Hop culture, dance style of B-boying & B-girling, the art called Hip-Hop writing (blockbuster & bubble style) as well as the history of Hip-Hop. The culmination of the class is a "Battle Jam" where the children perform routines and solos in front of an audience, while showcasing their artworks on display. Let us know the place, day and time cause it sounds like a rockin' good time.

Bgirlism is her motto which she incorporates into all aspects of her doings. Wanna find out more about Asia One and her many Hip-Hop projects, then check-out her main website www.asia-1.org

Lets not forget our meeting was held at De La Barracuda. I must admit, most of us assumed this was a restaurant but it turned out to be a swank clothing store not just for the ladies but for guys as well. They gave the LA Ladies Lotto a 10% discount on top of generously allowing us to take over their patio. Check out their merchandise at http://www.barracudashop.com/

It Bgirl: Asia One at Barracuda Tomorrow

Ladies Lotto Los Angeles' surprise guest speaker: ASIA ONE!

Asia One is known worldwide as a Bgirl icon and performer - she is a global consultant on Hip-Hop lifestyle and travels the world regularly not only performing, but speaking or consulting with various other world ambassadors of dance on the future evolution of the dance and the culture. Bgirlism is her motto and lifestyle philosophy.

Asia has been breaking for 12 years and been affiliated with The Rock Steady Crew, Eternal 2 Creations, Tony Tee Dance Projects, Malcolm Mclaren’s Buffalo Girls, and currently holds it down with her production and dance company called No Easy Props Productions and Essential Rockers Crew. She was portrayed in the Rachel Ramist documentary on women in Hip-Hop entitled "Nobody Knows My Name", was a featured artist in "The Freshest Kids" Bboy documentary, and was a commentator and coordinator of MGM's "The Breakin" DVD Collection". Additionally, she was featured in the PowerHouse book entitled We B*Girlz, and the Inner Ocean book entitled "We Got Issues", and the Vibes "Hip-Hop Divas" book.

Currently Asia One is a partner and leading creative executive for the Juice Nation project - determined to once again break barriers and further the urban dance culture to yet another level. Perhaps the most inspiring goal is her current plan to call together the world leaders/ambassadors to a One World meeting in order to unite world-wide efforts, events and awareness of the Bboy/Bgirl lifestyle. She continues this, and all of her efforts, in order to fulfill her dream to be "that girl" who is the visionary that builds an empowered, self-sufficient, financially prosperous, holistic Hip-Hop Community that affects positive change in the world.

Ladies Lotto - Los Angeles August 19th Meeting

The Ladies Lotto - Los Angeles August 19th meeting was a vintage buying extravaganza !!!

Our guest speaker Shareen Joy (Designer & Shareen's Vintage Owner) had her warehouse stocked to the brim with great vintage threads - all too hard to pass up. She opened her fabulous collection to the Ladies Lotto guests, so that plenty of us could walk away with real treasures. I spent my hard earned and saved-up cash on many unique pieces. There was also plenty of food and drinks to go around. At the end of the night there was still plenty of food and drink left over to give to Shareen for her employees to enjoy. Now that the atmosphere has been laid out (see slide show), lets get to the heart of the meeting. Shareen Joy was a true inspiration, no exaggeration. She moved the whole crowd, we even witnessed some actual water works. She seemed very open with the various experiences which led her to the life she leads today. After many bumps on the road to self discovery she has finally achieved true contentment. A number of LL guests identified with her. Hopefully these ladies can use her advice to further their place in their communities. Check out her website for store locations - http://www.shareenvintage.com/

Our meeting in El Lay's downtown district will be a memorable one. I'm looking forward to shooting the next meeting, I hope to see the LLLA women stylin' in their new Shareen fashions.

Through this experience, she decided to start her own label, Oblivionaire Records, and is currently working on a release for the fresh new electro rap duo Icy Lytes. She has also written for the weekly music magazine LA Record and is currently a contributor to the blog mixtapemixtape.com.
