Making Art Amongst Friends

Fellow Chicagoan Melissa Stinson and I stopped by the Levis space in the old Deitch gallery in Soho for a shoot from photographer Kareem Black. Tokyo TV was in town from Japan to shadow stylist Valissa Yoe for an upcoming documentary and the space was busy with an audience of fellow artists and fans. The styling was on point, the sick helmet Valissa pulled from Kerin Rose worked perfectly with singer Raquel Reeds futuristic style. Raquel just released a video for her new track "I'll Show You" with none other than Redman. Please peep the hot pink comb stuck in his fade!

The Levis Workshop is open until December and is open to the public; photoshoots, printing and general art making goes on all day in the building so be sure to stop by. They also have a photobooth you can shoot and print your portraits like the old school photstrips. (It's a bit addicting).

I'll be shooting portraits of a few of my favorite musicians, actors and artist friends this Wednesday afternoon in the space from 3-5 so stop by and say hello!

Ellen Rodgers

Ellen Rodgers is a alternative photographer from the UK.

At only 26 she has already worked with top magazines such as i.d and Dazed & confused.


For those who are unaware of the term 'alternative photography' this is experimentation with various chemicals, film and print.


Rodgers spends days in her darkroom based in London, where she makes her own chemicals. She is also experimenting on moving film, which is in now in production.


Her work is very moody and cinematic, reminding us of the old Charlie Chaplin films from the silent film era . Her dreamy scenes and clear fascination with religion, scripture and acient history take her imagery to a whole new level.

Though A Woman's Lens: Lomography book/camera combo!

The lush, haunting style of photography known as lomography has been mesmerizing cameraheads for decades. The effect is achieved through modifications in the camera's design, creating an alternate reality of skewed color and form.

The Parisian boutique Colette and Lomography.com have teamed up to produce an awesome lomography package, consisting of a beautiful book and an amazing camera: the Diana F+ Colette Edition.

The latter is the Colette Diana F+ camera, specially designed to produce glints in the eye, spring in the step, and funkiness in the photo. "Covered by Colette’s trademark blue spots, it hosts all features of the renowned Lomography Diana F+. Dating back to the early 1960s, the all-plastic Diana camera is a cult legend - famous for its dreamy, radiant, and lo-fi images."

The talented contributors, who were selectively chosen from women around the world, create a back-and-forth conversation between word and image.

Photographer and artist LLLA's Christina M. Felice lends her talent to the worlds of fashion, music, and the fascinating 10-year voyage of a particular pink dress. Grandmom's Pink Dress is a series that explores nostalgia, femininity, and environment through a pink dress once belonging to her Grandmother.

The Philadelphia transplant earned her BFA from Tyler School of Art, studied art in Rome, Italy and is enrolled in the MFA program at CSU Long Beach. She shoots lots of rock & roll lifestyle: Devendra Banhart, Cat Power, on tour with Ben Kweller, Bonaroo Festival. Her work appears in Tokion, Spin, HEEB and many others.

At PHTHRD, Jonathan, Joseph and Elizabeth will create 3′X3′ mosaic narratives entirely from Polaroid pictures as we celebrate the art of storytelling.

SLIDELUCK POTSHOW XI @ Chelsea Art Museum


THE WORLD’S MOST CELEBRATED SLIDESHOW AND POTLUCK DINNER RETURNS TO NEW YORK!

SLIDELUCK POTSHOW to be held in conjunction with The Armory Show on Saturday, March 29th, 2008, at the Chelsea Art Museum

Slideluck Potshow is a slideshow and a potluck where people bring food, drink, and submit a maximum of 5 minutes worth of slides (it's not a requirement). The evening begins with a couple hours of dining on the home-cooked delights of participants, while drinking and mingling. Following the potluck, the lights are dimmed, the crowd is hushed, and a spectacular slideshow commences.

Slideluck Potshow was founded in the backyard of advertising and editorial photographer, Casey Kelbaugh, in 2000. Today he and Co-Director Alys Kenny are organizing 3 events a year in NYC as well as in about 30 cities globally, including Berlin, Mexico City, Bogotá, London, Milan, São Paulo, Chicago, Barcelona, and Copenhagen. SLPS Los Angeles III is also happening on March 29th, and the LA event will be streamed in NYC and vice versa.

Saturday, March 29, 2008, from 7pm until 11pm. The potluck begins at 7pm and the slideshow begins at 8:30pm and ends at 10:30pm with one intermission.

Open Call for Emerging Women Art Photographers Under 31

"31 Under 31: Young Women in Art Photography"

On March 1, 2008, in honor of Women's History Month, Humble Arts Foundation, in collaboration with Ladies Lotto, will present "31 Under 31: Young Women in Art Photography," a month-long exhibition celebrating 31 of the most innovative young women in emerging art photography under the age of 31. The Exhibition is co-curated by Lumi Tan, Director of Zach Feuer Gallery in NYC, and Jon Feinstein, Curatorial Director of Humble Arts Foundation.

We are now accepting submissions from women photographers under the age of 31. Please mention your affiliation with Ladies Lotto when submitting.

Submission deadline: Thursday, January 25th, 2008

Submission guidelines: 5 - 10 jpegs, 550 pixels wide @ 72dpi, RGB, brief bio and artist statement

We will not consider images sent in a zipped file.

There is no submission fee.

Eligibility: Photographers must be female and born after March 1, 1977
