Black is Beautiful

Photo: Douglas Bicicleta via Flickr

Black is beautiful!

While the term gained prominence in the 1960s and was a staple at rallies and marches, it was actually coined much earlier; 1858 to be exact. The phrase was coined by John Sweat Rock, the first Black man to earn a medical degree in the United States. He was also a teacher, lawyer (the first Black person to be admitted to the bar of the US Supreme Court) and abolitionist. The movement encouraged Black Americans to stop lightening their skin and perming (relaxing) their hair.

Socially Conscious Swimwear: the Bantu Line

The women behind Ladies Lotto LA & Lovemade are working with Bantu, an African-based swimwear line that recently had its debut in Los Angeles. Rather than soliciting direct donations to help Africa, Bantu stimulates the local economy in a sustainable way by locating their complete manufacturing line in Ethiopia, and possibly in more countries in the future. Bantu (the Senegalese word for "gateway") is the Western gateway to the little-known beach culture and lifestyle of the 26 coastal countries in Africa. Top-of-the-line fashions are a hybrid of contemporary design and the centuries-old textile industry in West Africa.
"The juxtaposition of colors and patterns reflects the weaver’s identity, character, and beliefs. For instance, magenta is for “good health through the hybrid of red and blue, which is both stimulating and calming,” [the line's founder] Eklund says, and orange is for “energy and inspiration vitalized by the fiery clash between yellow and red.” " - Vogue.com
Please support this hot brand with a big mission by going to Barney's at either 9570 Wilshire Blvd in LA, or at 660 Madison Ave in NYC. See more at http://www.bantuwax.com/.

The Biggest Farmer's Market in France

The French are certainly known for their cuisine, but cooking isn't the only aspect for them to be proud of. This week is the Salon International de l'Agriculture, an annual event with over 1,000 exhibitors from over 17 countries and 22 french regions. The Salon aims to celebrate the agricultural diversity of France and the world as well as educate about sustainable farming methods.

This is a big deal. Not only does it take place in Paris (can you imagine having a bunch of pigs and horses and tomato plants take over Chelsea Piers?), but the Salon is the place to be this week with even Sarkozy making an appearance.

The diverse exhibit allows you to meet cows and their owners, learn about their living situations, and taste some of the cows' cheese. You can also explore the crops of France by sampling crêpes (ostensibly to learn about grains) and test your nose as you attempt to differentiate between different wine grapes.

Round out your visit by trying food products from all of France's regions (there is a lot of wine and cheese to taste) as well as the overseas domains and territories. There is plenty to taste and plenty to buy but you can practically make a meal with the samples, making the Salon a good place to load up before Fashion Week when there is no time to eat anyway.

Through March 1st, 12€

Members of the Month - February 2009

Rachael Mamane | Seattle

By day Rachael is a technical account manager for LivePerson, Inc.; managing the delivery and integrity of chat and voice over IP solutions for Fortune 500s including Apple Inc., and Verizon Communications. However, when the 9 to 5 is over her interests in the culinary arts, music and events comes to light. This means on any given day she can meet with artists and producers, sponsors, technicians and even farmers.

Rachael also acts as Managing Director of Decibel Festival (dB), the third largest multi-media event in North America. The festival helps bring Seattle alive each fall by attracting talent from all over the world. Rachael guides dB staff through facilitated sessions to solidify the mission, vision and scope of the festival. Rachael represents dB at international events including MUTEK (Montreal) and participates in an international consortium of electronic music and festival producers.

Despite her daily endeavors, Rachael's true purpose lies somewhere in the realm of food. A consummate and self-proclaimed foodie, Rachael has owned a low-scale gourmet catering company for over a decade. Her clients range from up and coming bands to venture capitalists. Every weekend you will find Rachael mingling with local farmers, cheese makers and shellfish purveyors at the Ballard Farmer's Market. She hosts seasonal local sustainable meals at her home where she encourages guests to sample such treats as Gold Medal regional cheeses and twelve-hour duck confit with local huckleberries.

Rashida Anderson | Los Angeles

Rashida attended USC with the intention of pursuing a career marketing or advertising. For the most part things went according to plan. In 2007, she started Artist Management, and became head of PR/Marketing for Tight Rope Magazine, soon after. In 2008 she left the independent entertainment magazine, where she found her niche to pursue acting.

In addition to being a very active Ladies Lotto member, Rashida promotes some of
Hollywood's hottest nightclubs with Go Group. Rashida loves art, music, film and culture. When she's not busy running around town or auditioning, she kicks back with her friends and family.

Gina Erdmann | New York

As the New York chapter's official photographer, Gina has been down with Ladies Lotto since Natalie's first email about the group. With a background in music marketing and management, Gina now finds herself working at Webster Hall's new venue The Studio. Here she spends her time as the venue's resident blogger/photographer and general go-to girl. When not at work Gina can usually be found in Greenpoint; watching reality television and hanging with her boyfriend and pitbull Ava.

Noelle Nicosia | Chicago

Navigating the fashion industry and breaking down fashion trends and styles for even the most fashionably challenged is what Noelle Nicosia does on a daily basis. Noelle’s fashion advice has been found in Rolling Out Magazine as well as on www.rollingout.com, where she contributes as a freelance writer. With fashion designs having been featured in Ebony, Noelle is currently developing her debut clothing line.

In mid-February Noelle launched Fashionable Wishes, which
focuses on the fashion and cosmetics industry; highlighting trends, product launches emerging designers and more -- to over 500,000 consumers. Click here to have your products or designers featured and to request a media kit.

Kimberly Schwede | San Francisco

To say that Kimberly Schwede is colorful would be an understatement. Not only is color a major part of her job as a self-employed graphic designer and illustrator. She's also got a resume that reads like a bestseller -- from illustrating children's books to designing a Swatch watch, to sketching naughty little images deserving of serious censorship.

Kimberly's main claim to fame, however, is her fun, frilly and femme design style, which she infuses into every one of her pieces; ranging from stationery to websites, and more. A graduate of California State University Chico with a degree in Visual Communications; Kimberly's creativity is getting the bills paid.

But all work and no play makes Kim a dull girl. So when she's not knee deep in Adobe Illustrator or fending off job offers from some of America's most fashionable companies, this Bay Area native can be found stomping out the stress at the gym, running outdoors at Chrissy Field or planning for her early beach front retirement. A self-described bargain hunter when it comes to clothes, the sky is the limit when it's time to travel. No stranger to globetrotting, Kimberly has already trekked the jungles of Guatemala and tackled ten countries in Europe so far. So don't be fooled by the baby face and blonde curls.

Never Mind the Pollocks

"Jackson Pollock by Miltos Manetas" for iPhone from Memo Akten on Vimeo

Now you can channel the Jackson Pollock on the inside directly to your computer screen or iPhone. Miltos Manetas's award winning; no mess; no fuss site lets you paint with your fingers, toes or whatever you like. The equally fun iPhone app was created by self-described mad scientist, Memo Akten.

You may not be given a retrospective at the MoMA but your creation could end up in a new book. Save your pictures and send them to

10-year-old Graffiti Artist

Age 7, Solvieg likes to watch graffiti artists at work in her hometown Brighton UK. Age 8, she asks her dad for some spray cans and produces totally unadulterated, happy artwork. Age 9, she gets noticed by Graphotism Magazine. On her flickr profile she says, "Watch out for me. I am 10. I am female." Should I send her a Ladies Lotto application?

Solvieg tattooed this guy's leg when she was 10. (Admittedly, at 10 I was pretty unaccomplished.)

Though A Woman's Lens: Lomography book/camera combo!

The lush, haunting style of photography known as lomography has been mesmerizing cameraheads for decades. The effect is achieved through modifications in the camera's design, creating an alternate reality of skewed color and form.

The Parisian boutique Colette and Lomography.com have teamed up to produce an awesome lomography package, consisting of a beautiful book and an amazing camera: the Diana F+ Colette Edition.

The latter is the Colette Diana F+ camera, specially designed to produce glints in the eye, spring in the step, and funkiness in the photo. "Covered by Colette’s trademark blue spots, it hosts all features of the renowned Lomography Diana F+. Dating back to the early 1960s, the all-plastic Diana camera is a cult legend - famous for its dreamy, radiant, and lo-fi images."

The book, entitled "Dianalogues Part 1: Through a Woman's Lens", examines point of view and gender from 10 different female perspectives. (Including Claw Money!) The talented contributors, who were selectively chosen from women around the world, create a back-and-forth conversation between word and image.

The package is available exclusively on colette.fr and lomography.com. Check it out!

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains

Tonight!
Wed Feb 25 at 8:30
@ Lincoln Center

Before anyone had heard of Diane Lane or Laura Dern, the two teen actresses put on flaming eye shadow and fishnet stockings to star in this backstage satire, a valentine to the faded glory of punk. Anticipating Riot Grrrl by a decade, the story chronicles the rise and fall of an all-female band, whose members hide their lack of talent and tone-deaf lead singer behind bursts of angst and energy. With veteran record producer Lou Adler directing and members of The Sex Pistols and The Clash dropping in for cameos, this late-night cable classic awaits rediscovery as an essential post-punk time capsule.

Followed by a post-punk afterparty with DJs Dan Selzer (Acute Records) & Aileen Brophy (Corita).

Rihanna Has A Posse

On the eve of the 2009 Grammies, the singer Rihanna was brutally attacked -- leaving "her eyes closed, two contusions on each side of her forehead, bruises over each of her eyes, swollen lips and lacerations on her face". The 20-year-old was hospitalized, leaving a storm of gossip and paparazzi in her wake.

The assailant? Her boyfriend, Chris Brown, who was released after posting $50,000 in bail.

Sara Tea has created a powerful sticker for everyone shocked over this incident, and supportive of Rihanna. Reminiscent of the street campaign "Andre the Giant Has a Posse", the sticker is available for anyone who wants to print it.

Fan Power

Promoting your music to the tastemakers at clubs, music venues and record stores should be your number one goal as a musician. Pick The Band: The Label makes this process pretty simple.

The alternative label put the fans in charge and helps bands get that deal they always sought for. They let the music lovers and the concert-goers be in control on the album releases. For bands the Grand Prize is a record deal with Pick The Band Records and the opportunity of a lifetime.

For the fans, this is truly where the fun begins. The label is powered by the input and participation of the fans.

Pick the Band will constantly be selecting fans to hang out in the studio, go backstage at shows, have private online chats with the bands and much more.

Pick the Band is also dedicated to preserving the relationship created by the fans and the artists they love by allowing the fans to have a say in how the artist they love is promoted and marketed. The Sexual Relationship Database

A funny project from the made up "World Health Optimization Management" or WHOM is the Sexual Relationship Database.

See how we're all connected beyond DNA...

Trouble in Mind - DRC

Think you've got a lot to worry about? Try living in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) where there's an all out war raging against women & children.

"The disturbing stories that have come out of the Congo defy imagination: women and young girls being raped by militia men in front of their families; rape victims ranging from as young as six months to as old as 83 years; women and girls faced with unwanted pregnancies and raped intentionally by men known to have AIDS. There is also a devastating epidemic of women and girls whose vaginas and reproductive organs have been completely destroyed from being violated with guns, bottles and sticks, often resulting in a condition called fistula, a rupture that results in the uncontrollable leakage of urine and feces. The traumatized rape victims are then further stigmatized and ostracized by their families and communities."

Public Citizen is calling for photo submissions that speak to President Obama. What would you say? Would you ask for universal health insurance? More government transparency? Whatever it is, Public Citizen wants to know.

So start snapping those photos and be heard!
