Black is Beautiful

Black is beautiful!

While the term gained prominence in the 1960s and was a staple at rallies and marches, it was actually coined much earlier; 1858 to be exact. The phrase was coined by John Sweat Rock, the first Black man to earn a medical degree in the United States. He was also a teacher, lawyer (the first Black person to be admitted to the bar of the US Supreme Court) and abolitionist. The movement encouraged Black Americans to stop lightening their skin and perming (relaxing) their hair.
