Floating Cities: The Future of Architecture?

The Netherlands, which for years has fought the encroaching ocean, is now considering how to embrace the waters in future city design, Reuters reports.

A number of prototypes for floating cities are being considered. Indeed, the Netherlands may well become a laboratory for such thinking.

A goal is to be able to remove or relocate a building without harming the surrounding environment.

More info and a video here.

Half of us are female, but only 10% of our leaders are.

A picture is worth a thousand words.

I prefer to take the information in this list as incentive to act, rather than allow it to discourage me from doing more.

I hope you all do as well.

Tara

Iran's Joan of Arc

When viral video hit the internet, slain 27 year old Iranian protester, Neda (above) , becomes a symbol for Iran's current political unrest.

They are shaky, blurred images: A young woman collapses onto the pavement, a dark pool of blood spreads beneath her body. Two men kneel next to the woman and press on her chest, screaming. The camera phone which is filming her zooms in on her face. Her pupils roll to the side, blood streams out of her nose and mouth. "Neda, don't be afraid! Neda, stay with me. Neda, stay with me!" cries one man. Another man beseeches someone to take her in a car. Then the footage stops. (via Salon)

She has become a worldwide symbol of the struggle, for more info visit:

Lover: the opening

Kiss today goodbye,
The sweetness and the sorrow.
Wish me luck, the same to you.
But I can't regret
What I did for love, what I did for love.
Look my eyes are dry.
The gift was ours to borrow.
It's as if we always knew,
And I won't forget what I did for love,
What I did for love.
Gone,
Love is never gone.
As we travel on,
Love's what we'll remember.
Kiss today goodbye,
And point me t'ward tomorrow.
We did what we had to do.
Won't forget, can't regret
What I did for
Love
What I did for...

5 of the Greenest Cities in The World

Thanks to a post on Treehugger today, there are some new cities to keep in mind if you're planning a relocation.

(and can I just add... yay Montreal!)

1. Portland, Oregon
The first city to be designated a
Platinum-level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists also won Popular Science's nod as greenest city, based on a survey of renewable energy use, transportation choices, green living and recycling. If you want to stay off the beaten track when immersing yourself in Portland's green infrastructure, try a tour of Portland's lesser known city parks, including the World's Smallest Park--as certified by the Guinness Book of World Records. (I'm not sure how I feel about the World's Smallest Park)

2. Freiburg, Germany

Freiburg has been experimenting with green community living for decades, ever since the city center was rebuilt on green principles after its destruction in World War II.
Visitors to Freiburgcar-free sector of Vauban. Don't miss the Solar Village and the Heliotrop House, both designed by Rolf Disch.

3. Zermatt, Switzerland
Zermatt, a quaint Swiss town at the foot of the Matterhorn, draws nature enthusiasts to outstanding skiing, hiking and mountaineering. As tourism exploded, the city made a decision not to fight the battle to keep infrastructure sufficient for growing traffic demands. Today, the streets are reserved for pedestrians and cycles. Loads are pulled through town on hand carts, horse carts and manually steered electric carts. Small electric freight vehicles require special permits, and some exceptions are made for emergency vehicles. And the place to stay is The Omnia, re-invented by New York-based architect Ali Tayar, and featured in Wallpaper* magazine.

4. Montreal, Quebec, Canada
From the Montreal Protocol (regulating emissions damaging to the ozone layer) to the recently implemented Bixi public bike sharing project, Montreal beckons with green initiative. After all, any city hundreds of kilometers from the nearest ocean that boasts its own local surfing club is filled with people who know how to make the most of their surroundings. Don't miss the annual butterflies go free day at the botanical gardens and do check out the nascent sport of river surfing. The place to stay: eco-chic boutique hotel Quartier Dix30.

5. Austin, Texas, USA
Austin, Texas, the home of Whole Foods has emerged as a leader in the quest to break the fossil fuel habit. Most recently, Austin has mandated home energy efficiency audits. Austin's Green Mayor leads the city further down the sustainability path, and to the top of lists of greenest city awards. Try to visit during one of Austin's greener festivals and enjoy the greener festival foods.

The Uniform Project is also a year-long fundraiser for the Akanksha Foundation, a grassroots movement that is revolutionizing education in India. At the end of the year, all contributions will go toward Akanksha’s School Project to fund uniforms and other educational expenses for slum children in India.

Recycling in NYC

Image via Flickr member Doonvas licensed under Creative Commons.

I thought I knew everything about recycling in New York, but this post on re-nest has got me all confused.
Did you know that only plastic bottles are recyclable in the city? It can get a little confusing knowing what to recycle or not, so see below for a quick rundown... And if you have any more info on the subject, please feel free to share.

1. Plastic bottles only. If you wouldn’t call it a bottle, it doesn’t get recycled. Yogurt containers, restaurant delivery containers and plastic cups do not make the cut. Plastic shopping bags technically don’t go with the plastic recycling, but they'll get sorted out along the way.

2. Recycle anything more than 50% metal. And it's okay to leave the labels on as they burn away when the metal is smelted.

3. Glass bottles and jars only.

4. Milk and juice cartons go in the bin with the plastic, glass and metal.

5. Recycle any and all paper, staples and all. They'll get sorted out later.

Check out NYC's Department of Sanitation for more recycling guidelines.
