US Tax Cuts, Expiration Dates And Fareed Zakaria

The US is up shit's creek - thanks to eight oppressive years under the BUSH regime and its policy we're in the worst off financially than we've been in for nearly half a century.

Republicans are bitching about lowering the deficit yet they are against allowing Bush tax cuts for America's wealthy to expire (just to let you know nearly HALF of Americans do not pay income tax). Allowing these tax cuts to expire across the board would lessen the deficit by 30% (yes, that's 3-0 percent) and take us back to a similar taxing system as the Clinton Admin (which saw the budget balanced for the first time in 40 years as well as a economic surplus - think Prada, Gucci and Chanel for daaaaysss).

Watch CNN's Fareed Zakaria's take on what America should be doing (following in the steps of Great Britain)-

Please watch this and spread the word. Inform and empower yourself because it's taking a toll on ALL OF US.

There's A Class War Happening, It's Not Helping the Economy

This past May more than 2 million Americans were left without unemployment benefits and Congress has yet to extend these jobless benefits. Congress has had different opportunities to take such action, leaving these 2 million people (you are probably one of them) up the proverbial shit's creek. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), criticized the US for it's lackadaisical action.

The US, suffering its worse economic atmosphere since the Great Depression, will not see an upswing in jobs unless swift action is taken. Part of which is why the OECD has been harsh in its criticism and suggests government-sponsored programs that encourage private businesses to reduce workers' hours rather than lay people off -- something that "significantly reduced job losses" in 24 OECD countries -- and "well-targeted hiring subsidies" like tax breaks for companies that hire additional workers.

It's been over 30 days since these benefits expired and Congress recently took vacation for the 4th of July holiday. Not sweating it all huh? If something doesn't happen quickly, we are all bound to suffer. Take action, call you local congress person and lay on them! Tell them to get off their fat asses and extend unemployment benefits or they won't have a job next election either.

Here's a list of Congress people - http://www.house.gov/house/MemberWWW.shtml

A Woman's Worth - $3 Trillion Bucks!

Women business owners have a MAJOR impact on the economy. $3 Trillion bucks baby!

In her article on Huffington Post, Ladies Lotto member Adelaide Lancaster writes

"Apparently the independence we women entrepreneurs seek is coming at a big price. The benefits of entrepreneurship are driving more women than ever into self-employment, yet the financial rewards necessary to make this trend stick, still elude most of us.

In October the Center for Women's Business Research published the first ever study on the economic impact of women business owners in the US.

The following data were rightly heralded by many media outlets as a great triumph:

* There are approximately 8 million women-owned businesses nationwide

* Women-owned businesses employ 23 million workers (16% of total US jobs)

* Women business owners account for approximately $3 trillion dollars of total economic impact

Pretty impressive stuff."

We are definitely impressed. What's rather alarming is that regardless of this MAJOR economic contribution, women are STILL getting shorted! Read more from her article HERE.

And we highly recommend spreading the word to raise awareness and DEMAND MORE!

Daily Commute: Keep New York Moving

Morning commuters! Keep New York Moving is a joint effort by the Campaign for New York's Future and the Empire State Transportation Alliance to ensure safe, affordable, reliable transportation for New York now and in the future.

The NY transportation system is facing a serious crisis, and unless the leaders in Albany take action to provide new, stable funding for public transit, the MTA will move forward with their "doomsday plan." Their plan includes severe service cuts across all five boroughs and fare hikes – as much as $3.00 per ride (that isn't an April Fool's joke)!

That's a hefty fare hike, tell Albany what you think!

B8 Global Justice for Burma is an international affair taking place in Delhi, London, New York and San Francisco on August 8, 2008. B8 hopes to bring attention to the brutal regime of General Than Shwe and to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the 8888 massacre. In 1987, the country was thrown into economic turmoil when General Ne Win decided to change the currency based on his astrologer's assertion that "9" was his lucky number. The number was not so lucky for Burmese citizens; many suffered because of this abrupt change in the economic flow. On August 8, 1988 thousands of peaceful protesters including students and monks were slaughtered on the streets of Burma (now Myanmar) as they called for a more stable economy.

alldaybuffet is co-sponsoring an event to bring people -- including the Prime Minister of a government in exile -- together in the spirit of the Olympics, under one banner, to stop the atrocities in Burma. The B8 events will kick off the larger Global Justice for Burma campaign to end impunity for war crimes, torture, and genocide in Burma by calling for the referral of Burma's General Than Shwe and his military regime to the International Criminal Court.

Events will be held in various spaces throughout the world; many will have monks on hand to discuss the situation in Burma. The only requirement is that you wear a bit of scarlet to show your solidarity.
