HerStory: Grace Coddington

Grace Coddington is the creative director of Vogue magazine. I first learnt about her whilst watching a Channel Four documentary film, which follows her and Vogue editor Anna Wintour, for the making of the 840 page September 2007 issue, the largest issue of vogue ever published.

The documentary was an amazing account of life behind the scenes of the successful magazine and was an eye opener to a very different side of all associated with life in the fashion industry...it certainly is not all glamour!

Coddington was born in 1941, Anglesey, Wales england.

Wales is in rural England miles, away from designer shops and fast city life.

She is said to of had a love of fashion from her early teens and would order Vogue magazine on 'rush copy' so she could keep up with fashion trends and have a connection with the fashion world.

At 17 she was entered into the Vogue young model competition and won...this was the begining of her career with Vogue.

Coddington worked with the company for years, but her career as a model was shattered when she was in a car accident and disfigured her eye. She underwent plastic surgery and at 28 went back to try for a job with Vogue, but this time as a Junior editor, she later became the Editor- in-chief and art director of the magazine.

Coddington has worked for Vogue over thirty years, and has very much been apart of it's huge success, her talent only came to light with the release of the documentary in 2009.

Grace Coddington has the most amazing eye as an stylist.

Her shoots are mesmerizing, highly stylized and theatrical and her pictures almost always tells a story.

This lady is truly amazing and well worth a story!

90's + Girl Power: A Discussion

Remember the 90's? Remember "Girl Power"? What happened to all of that stuff?
Read a recent discussion on SLATE with Marisa Meltzer (author of Girl Power, The Nineties Revolution in Music) & Sara Marcus. They talk about angry women, babydoll dresses & Beth Ditto to name a few...

Highly recommend reading it if you were alive during the 1990's.
