She's a LLady: Courtney Escanio

When did you first get involved with Ladies Lotto?
Actually a friend of mine, Linda Lovemade, introduced me. She and I had a few conversations about the various hustles we had going. From that she recommend that I join. I was hesitant at first, because there is no official SF chapter. I ended up approaching Natalie to help sponsor some iDR (itsdesignrelated.com) events and we worked it out. I was kinda unofficially in. I guess 'cause at that time I hadn't applied for membership. It was out of order but thats what happens when the hustle doesn't stop.

Courtney loves Basquiat

You got a degree in Graphic Design and got to work for Apple! How did you get that opportunity and how awesome was that experience?
I got the contact through a friend of mine in college who interned there. I'd never met him before that, but he really helped out. He helped a hungry student get her first gig and her first taste of the corporate life. It was a pretty awesome experience. They don't know it, but my packaging team had tremendous influence on me. From working with teams, how I work (process), vendors, designing concepts into different mediums, to fun stuff like photo shoots; all of it was intense and immense. I had a mentor and I look back at the patience he had to guide me, I can't thank him enough. Besides the great talent everywhere, everyone was really forward-thinking. To be surrounded by that was awesome, as well.

What area of graphic design do you specialize in, and what kinds of projects do you enjoy most? What inspires you?
Well traditionally, I'm in print graphics but nowadays I'm in fashion. I didn't really expect myself to be in this position but I roll with it. The projects I enjoy the most probably are the ones that involves a lot of strategy, planning, and conception. I mean, its not just about slapping graphics into things. It's creating an experience for the future user or consumer. I want that experience to be one to remember.

The legendary Gloria Steinem inspires Courtney

What inspires you?
Honestly, the good people around me. From the creative and talented people, to the people I love. Also visiting retail stores, visiting design studios, and vacationing. Sounds odd huh? Well to me, I like to observe behaviors and cultures.

Ladylike x Adapt Hoodie

Currently, you're freelancing. Would you like to get back into working for an agency or do you enjoy doing your own thing?

I am freelancing at a large corporation, designing for Fatlace/Ladylike, and growing my little side gigs as well. I wouldn't mind getting back into working for an agency, but at the moment I'm enjoying the flexibility of freelancing.

To add to that, would you like to have your own graphic design company?
Sure! The sky is the limit right? ; )

You've also done work for Sephora, Clinique, and Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. What projects/campaign are you most proud of?
Well for Clinique, it was this jar I did. I've done package designs but none that involves the container that holds the product so it involved a bit more industrial design. It was a learning curve. So anything that is challenging is the most rewarding projects for me. For Sephora, I worked on the Holiday campaign and this was before recession. It was all about glitter, glam, and luxury. We went over the top with specialty signage, finishing and graphics. I look into Sephora now and can see the economy effect the in-store experience.

Do you have any other interests or talents other than your career?
I love working out! I grew up in dance and cheer from the age of 7, so being active is important to me. People think just because I'm in design, I wear designer names. If you catch me during the week, I'm in my North Face fleece, yoga pants, and Nikes! I love Whole Foods and I love to eat out. I guess I'm pretty much your typical Cali girl. Talents? I can roll my "R"s, whaaaaat?!!

Lastly, what do you think this year will hold for you?
This year is all about positivity (for me at least). Think it. Say it. Be it. What unfolds this year will be growth personally and professionally. I'm designing for Ladylike and I know that's gonna rock because we have a bunch of great gals on the team, so be on the look out! And more Ladies Lotto gigs in SF...

Margaret Harrison for Intersection For The Arts

Work done by the controversial artist Margaret Harrison displayed at the Intersection for the Arts. With this art work hanging, "The Bodies are Back" is definitely an attention grabber. On first sight this art work displays as just any other art work displayed, it wasn't until my second look that i realized that it was captain America with the body of wonder woman. Margaret Harrison, who is pioneer of the feminist art, has been seen as controversial even from the beginning when she was shut down in the 70's by London police on the second day of her solo exhibit opening. She is now re-displaying her work at the Intersection For The Arts Feb 10 - March 27. Check out some crazy cool art work, and take some pics for me.

Solo Mujeres at Mission Cultural Center SF is March 3rd

The Solo Mujeres Exhibition at Mission Cultural Center opens on March 2nd, running through March 27th (right in time for Women's History Month).

The Opening Reception is Wednesday March 3rd from 6-9:30pm
Admission $5

A little about this two-part show: 1) Aesthetics for Renewed Independence Group exhibition, curated by Aide Rodriguez is in the Main Gallery

“Two Four looks at four decades of Latina culture through collected photographs and ephemera from the archive of life long 24th Street/Mission resident Sandy Cuadra as well as through preserved archival footage of the neighborhood from the 70s and 80s collected by Veronica Majano and the Mission Film Archive”. - Clare Haggarty (curator)

“Two-Four Home Girls, Circa 1980”

The Tiny Locas, "You and I" dances, and the Low-rider cars represented rites of passage and the social scene for teenage girls in the early 1980's in the 24th Street Mission neighborhood. The exhibition features photographs by Sandy Cuadra- a former Tiny Loca who has lived in the Mission for over 30 years- memories of dancing, cars, parties in the park, and tight friendships. In addition, footage from the Mission Film Archive (thanks to filmmaker Vero Majano) further activates the world of Low-riders and the "You and I" dances. Vintage posters to promote those dances, made by Mitchell Salazar, also hang in the gallery, and complete this nostalgic look into a particular period in the Mission that speaks to the former teenager in all of us.

Lladies Love: Boxing Kitten

You know you've arrived as a designer if Beyoncé is wearing your stuff! And Boxing Kitten founder/designer Maya Lake now has that distinction. Miss Lake began designing at 10 (!) and whipping up fabulous creations for her family and friends at 15. Boxing Kitten is a gumbo of funky prints and interesting shapes, reminiscent of traditional African-style prints. Instead of dashiki's, caftans, and head wraps, think pencil skirts, high-waist shorts, onsies, and flirty little dresses.

Solange was a fan from way back and in Ladies Lotto spirit, she introduced her sister and her entire crew to Boxing Kitten, as well. The line now has fans in Erykah Badu, DJ Rashida, Jack of J'Davey, and video director Melina, to name a few. And who else is wearing Boxing Kitten? Alicia Keys and Bey in the upcoming video for "Put It In a Love Song"! Go Maya!

Check out the super cute Boxing Kitten site and keep up with her on Twitter!

Fashion Week A/W 2010 - Makeup or break up

Make up trends on the Fashion Week runways are skewing au naturel:

Yesterday at Cynthia Rowley, MAC makeup artist Val Garland wanted a clean face with Cream Sheen lip gloss in a Caramel color called Tilt-a-Whirl and simply groomed brows. But ever-creative Val kept it interesting with the eyes: Almond-shaped black eyeliner with what she called, "a kick at the end," and straight fake eyelashes for a modern, not retro, visual effect. (another makeup artist hand straightened the lashes with a mini-flatiron. No lie!)

Eva Scrivo and Wella added crimped, jewel-toned extension to the hair.

Backstage this afternoon at Band of Outsiders, MAC makeup artist James Kaliardos used a charcoal brown shadow to deepen the eye, no mascara, a duo highlighter/contour and a natural lip stain. He told me the designers inspired the natural look with their "cool, really great clothes that are classical, preppy and all-American."

Rag & Bone, BCBG and Yigal also went the natural route, but Richard Chai and Doo.Ri were all about statement-making lips so...stay tuned!! Fashion Week isn't over yet!

Chinese New Year for Us All!

Okay dudes, over 3 billion people can't be wrong, and since im only 1/2, i barely count...hahah! Hapa pride! Actually more than that considering more than just Han descent Chinese folks celebrate Chinese New Year, including Koreans, Tibetans, Mongolians, Vietnamese, Thai, Malaysian, and virtually every country that houses some ethnic Chinese peeps.

Seeped in tea infused tradition, Chinese New Year or Chu Xi, as it translates to "Year-pass Eve", is a 15 day (u heard right!) celebration, of which 7 days are legal holidays, encompassing special foods, and red decorative characters that symbolize significant attributes that we desire in the coming Year of the Tiger (ROAR).

In a country and culture where emotions are not readily displayed, Chu Xi is a time that families separated, due to work necessity, can come together and share some prosperity and cheer. This is the time of the largest human migration, when migrant workers in China and overseas travel to be reunited with their families on Chinese New Year's Eve.

I'll even let you in on a lil secret, since yall love some Bruce Lee, fried rice n eggrolls, orange chicken (some Chimerican food) lets get a lil deeper historically speaking..

As the elders say, a long long long time ago, there was this beast called Nian, who was ferocious and would devour livestock, crops and villages, anything to quell his appetite. Nian would come every new years day and wreck havic like a semi-automatic. Folks use to put a plate of food on their doorstep to keep him from coming inside and eating them. Legend has it that Nian was frightened by a young child who was wearing red, so people began hanging red lanterns, decorations, and painting their doors red to keep Nian away, even lightening fire works to scare him.

Chinese New Year actually marks the arrival of the spring in China, usually around Feb.4th, but it varies every year, as the Chinese calendar differs from the Gregorian.

Here are some cool aspects of the Chinese New Year that you can add to your rituals and customs, making it special for everyone!

New Years dinner is a big festivity, whole fish should be served to represent a surplus amount. Uncut noodles to symbolize longevity, and dumpling, or Jiaozi that represent wealth, also Buddha's feast veggie dish with Gingko nuts, lotus seeds, bamboo, and black fungus that signifies the earth or root. Going to visit relatives and friends decked out in red, bringing them dried fruits and nuts and cakes, giving children "li" little red envelops with crisp dollar bills in them, bangin some firecrackers, lion and dragon drum dance, to chase away evil spirits, are all great ways of celebrating the New Year!

Feb.14, marks the Chinese New Year of the Metal Tiger

The year of the Tiger is traditionally associated with massive changes and social upheaval. Therefore, 2010 is very likely to be a volatile one both on the world scene, as well as on a personal level. But dont trip.. read your personal scope to see what is in store for ya!

The Rat

For those born in the Year of the Rat, year 2010 promises to be an average year for you, while you may suffer from melancholy from time to time, the positioning of the planets in 2010 will benefit the rats and they will most definitely be more self-confident, and be more innovative than before. Excellent news for the lonely rats, year 2010 promises a great love life for you. You will definitely find a lover within the year, and for the ones that are blissfully married, the year will be filled with romantic joy. Time to rejoice in the warmth of love, rats!

The Ox

You should be aware of some conflicts that might happen in the coming year, particularly with the dragons and horses. To avoid these conflicts, remember to keep an open mind and to not judge others without any basis. This year is a good year for you to learn a new language, so, if you have always wanted to pick up a new language before traveling, 2010 would definitely be the best year. Career-wise, those born in the year of the Ox should be aware that in 2010, your working attitude will be slightly lackadaisical and without much buoyed enthusiasm, put in effort to change the attitude.

The Tiger

For their own year, the Tigers will face a surprisingly average year with little ups and downs. While everything will be at your advantage this year, you will find it terribly difficult to find the encouragement and willpower to perform at your very best. Find the encouragement within yourself or you might be faced with plenty of disappointments. 2010 will provide a healthy backdrop for you, for those suffering digestive problems; you will most likely find that situations for you will improve.

The Rabbit

Unfortunately for the Rabbits, 2010 will possibly be a bad year for those who were born in the year of the Rabbit. You will have to work hard to achieve some good in terms of your career, health and love life. Rabbits should look towards philosophy and religion to find some good in the upcoming year. Be prudent, thrifty and stay on the lookout for signs of a business scam, your finances could prove to be a problem this upcoming year.

The Dragon

For those born in the year of the Dragon, it is time for you to apply into some form of school or undertake some courses! Studying in the upcoming year will bring you a considerable amount of success. While you might find yourself getting into some minor conflicts, it is essential for you to stay positive. Your ability to stay positive will lead to a happier and more successful year ahead. It might also be a rocky year ahead for you if you are in a relationship, remember, stay positive and lend a listening ear and you will stay happy.

The Snake

Those born in the year of the Snake are known to be very stubborn. Keep your stubbornness in check; learn to control it and you will find many successes coming towards you in the upcoming year. While it is important to have dreams, try to keep a level-headed mind for the upcoming year or you might end up straying away from reality. Once you’ve kept a level-headed mind, you will find yourself in favorable opportunities in your career, make sure you grab them!

The Horse

Good news for the horses! Year 2010 might be one of the smoothest years for you. You will find bonds between your friends and relatives being built fairly easily. Keep a clear head when making decisions for you will find that plenty of decisions may sound familiar to one another but with very different outcomes. You may also tend to overfeed yourself in the upcoming year so be sure to keep on a healthy diet and exercise regularly.

The Goat

Those born in the year of the Goat will find plenty of wealth opportunities coming their way in 2010. You may end up passing up on a lot of them and making several bad decisions early on in the trimester but it is crucial for you to stay positive and not be disheartened by your losses for more opportunities will be coming for you later in the year. Stay on your feet, be in the company of your loved ones and develop more personal relationships and you will find that the upcoming year might just be your best year yet.

The Monkey

It is essential for the monkey to not be overly emotional in 2010. You will find that not everything will go your way initially. While you might lose some close friends, you have to maintain mental stability to save the broken pieces of the relationship. However, 2010 will provide business opportunities for you. It is the year for you to take risks. Take the risks and you will be rewarded tremendously. Do not rest on your laurels and expect things to happen!

The Rooster

2010 will be a year of competition for those born in the year of the Rooster. In your career, you will face plenty of competition to get up onto a higher rung of the ladder in your company. If you are unattached, you will find competition for someone that you are interested in. Make well-thought out decisions and do not make rash decision. Adopt a positive and hardworking attitude and 2010 might just be a good year for you.

The Dog

There will be ups and downs for the dog in the year 2010. In your career, your lack of respect towards authority might prove to be a downfall for you. Your quest for independence will lead to you having some problems in your love life as well. It is ultimately crucial for you to tone down your brash attitude to find some good in the upcoming year or 2010 will prove to be a year of loneliness for you. Stay friendly!

The Pig

Known to be sentimental creatures, you have to learn to put off your sentimental ways to find some unexpected successes in your line of work and your love life for 2010. The alignment of the stars will bring you utmost luck for the coming year so expect some monetary windfall coming your way. It is important for you to stay away from carbonated drinks in the upcoming year for you will be vulnerable and open to intestinal and digestive problems. However, besides that, 2010 might prove to be a healthy year ahead for you.

Hey Lover! San Francisco Gets Cozy Saturday Feb 13th~

So have you heard about Lovers Rock? Let me give you some background -

It started 3 years ago when some LLadies got together & talked about the cute single guys they know would be perfect for someone out there... if only there was a place where these single men could meet other single ladies of high caliber. UM LIGHT BULB!!!!! So we put together a little soiree called LOVERS ROCK. We asked all the girls to bring a single guy of choice to share (even if it meant coming with your boyfriend or girlfriend + that special third wheel)....

It turned out to be a HIT because there are still some of the folks who met that night working it out!!

Nevertheless, it's our fun little version of Valentine's day. A way to make cupid's arrow more than just an abstract thought. Plus, it's all fun and games for the season!!

We hope you can make it!

Feel free to spread the WORD!

Bar Celona

Williamsburg tapas outpost
Bar Celona started garnering buzz before it opened in late 2009. The lounge is the first culinary venture of former fashion freelancer Cynthia Diaz. After working for the likes of Etro, Jill Stewart, lisli and others, Diaz ventured on to a new path. Bar Celona was born out of Diaz's love of fine food and wanting to create a space that would be a destination rather than a stop off; the moody and seductive interior helps Diaz achieve this goal.

Executive Chef Jordy Lavanderos' menu is a study in old meets new. Old school Spanish flavors are paired with new Dominican influences as evidenced in their braised oxtail and crispy, sweet
bombas . Besides Bar Celona's mouthwatering tapas guests will enjoy artisanal cocktails conjured up by beverage consultants, The Tippling Bros. The adventurous drink menu includes a savory paella infused cocktail. For the more traditional, there's an all-Spanish wine list.

How To Monitor Your Brand on the Web: For Free

You are going to LOVE us after you read this post found by Lily Zhu for Hubspot. Three SIMPLE ways to monitor your brand for FREE.

The importance of brand monitoring increases with the rise of new media. Just as you pay close attention to the things people say about your personal brand online, you should also pay close attention to conversations about your business. This will give you a better idea of the merits and weaknesses of your brand and how to address them.

Still not convinced? Here are three good reasons online brand monitoring matters:

1. The speed by which online comments travel multiplies their impact.

The sheer speed of the Internet -- one of the main reasons people use it for communication -- means comments can travel far and wide in no time. Just as a mere tweet may turn into a blog post and then make national news, a negative comment, genuine or not, may turn away hundreds of people who may have been willing to try your products. You can preempt such situations by monitoring your brand in social media, the blogosphere and on major discussion forums to catch sight of and fend off malicious brand attacks before others do.

2. The collection of individual comments gives you a more objective overview of prospects' and customers' perception of your products, and may help you improve them.

Different people prefer different sites, so gathering commentary from various online destinations enhances the likelihood of obtaining a representative sample of customers/prospects. Setting up tools such as Google Alerts allows you to aggregate relevant comments, making it easy to organize information. As a result, you'll have a better overall sense of how customers perceive your products. This will give you a better idea of the aspects of your products that need improvement and help you facilitate changes that will satisfy potential customers and strengthen your brand.

3. These tools also help you stay up-to-date with new trends that you can integrate into your product design or marketing strategies for your existing products.

Another advantage of online monitoring tools is they help you track news and changes in your industry. By tracking these industry trends, you can learn about the new needs of your customer base and base product design changes or marketing strategies on addressing these needs. By monitoring keywords relevant to your business, you can obtain a bigger picture of industry development to determine where your business stands in its context, helping you stay cognizant of the pace and direction of business development.

The rise of new media bridges the communication gap between sellers and buyers but also presents new challenges such as staying focused in the midst of information overflow. However, with the help of free online tools, businesses can become better equipped to interact with potential customers and, in turn, build stronger brands.
