Pass the Dutchie

Just read an interesting article in of all things, National Geographic, about Double Dutch . The name Double Dutch is slang for something confusing or difficult, it's also an insult dating back to the 1800's when the British mocked the Dutch language.

A predominantly girls sport, it was introduced to the "New Amsterdam" aka New York City in the 1600's by who else, the Dutch. However, it wasn't until the 1940's when young Blacks & Jews pioneered the sport, introducing it to cities across the US. Subsequently, its become a global phenomenon.

In fact, starting this spring, Double Dutch will become a varsity sport in all New York City public schools. How long until Crunch offers a Double Dutch class?

Check out this funny video, Malcom McLaren's Double Dutch circa 1983

Photography Lomography

Tonight the Lomography company is opening a new gallery and store in the Big Apple. The party will include a live performance by A Hawk and A Hacksaw, plus food and drink and other Lomographic goodies.

The Lomography Gallery Store features the largest LomoWall in North America; made o of 35,000 hand-picked lomographs.

In addition, the store will offer events, parties, and exhibitions, including a stop by the Diana World Tour in November 2009 where hundreds of classic Diana cameras from the 60s & 70s will be on display.
Their photo technique is inspired by the "charmed unique, colorful, and sometimes blurry" images that the camera produced.

Lomography emphasizes casual, snapshot photography. Characteristics such as over-saturated colors, blurring, and alternative film processing are often considered part of the "Lomographic technique."

Black is the new black.

Mike Potter, an NYC makeup artist who spent years putting ebony nail polish on big stars (Karen O.) and big screens (Hedwig and the Angry Inch), couldn’t find a truly matte version without any gleam or gloss, so he created Knock Out cosmetics. His addictive Flatte Black nail paint is shiny when wet but dries sans shimmer with one coat. (Imagine the look of fresh charcoal.)

Find the chip-resistant lacquer (which also comes in lusterless white and, soon, Calamine) in the Chrysler Building of polish bottles — a tall, slender brush in a frosted art nouveau glass.

It’s powerful, elegant, iconic.

Available at Miomia, 318 Bedford Avenue, between South 1st and 2nd Streets, Williamsburg (718-388-0149 or shopmiomia.com); Henri Bendel, 712 Fifth Avenue, at 56th Street (212-247-1100). To see styles, go to koknockout.com.

Yoga, With Some Attitude

LLCHI started the year off right with centering themselves at Vessel Yoga. Nike Sponsored Yoga Instructor Margo Kellison lead the ladies through invigorating motions to the tunes of mellow hip-hop and R&B. Vessel Studio is chic and inviting and offers a tranquil escape from the city's hustle and bustle, and the experience is anything but ordinary.

As for the end of last year...

DEC08
On December 23rd 2008, LLCHI met to toast to a fabulous first year and an exciting year to come at Park52 in Hyde Park aka Obama's home! Gathered around a table of delicious food and overflowing martinis, the ladies shared great conversation and resolutions for the new year.

NOV08
On November 19th 2008, the ladies of LLCHI met at Metamorph Studios in Wicker Park to hear from some of the best female tattoo artists in the game. Apryl Jenkins, Jenn Trok, Esther Garcia, Robyn, and Tiny shared the good, the bad, and the ugly of tattoos with a mixed audience of tatted ladies and ink virgins. Not only did they dispell some common ink myths, but they also talked about what it means to be a woman in a male-dominate industry. At the end of the event, the LLCHI ladies were definitely better versed on the ink industry... and some even left with appointments!

Pretty and Preppy With A Twist

I love fashion with elements of both men’s and women fashion. Steven Alan, is one of my favorites, who fuses male and female style very well. It’s preppy and pretty, feminine with a personal twist. Classic and timeless design is essential in his style, but without being boring.

His new Single Needle style has all of the great details like adorable chest pocket and some new ones as well with the classical button down collar. His rainbow-colored plaid shirts are a must if you want to enter this spring looking pretty and chic.

Steven Alan has a couple of locations in downtown Manhattan and Brooklyn, where you can find his own collections but also trendy brands such as 3.1 Philip Lim and United Bamboo.

Click here for more information and where to get that colorful outfit that will welcome the brighter spring days.

Call the Doctor!

Album you cannot live without #5: Sleater Kinney - Call the Doctor

Sleater-Kinney is bad to the bone. Taking their name from a highway exit near Olympia, Washington these three ladies came screaming out of the early 90's riot grrrl scene. Call the Doctor is SK's second album, going beyond Hello Kitty barretts & cunt written across the belly, these ladies write/sing about internal girl frustration – from being dismissed to being downright discriminated – while the music rails with a provocative edge.

With universal themes, a track like Good Things eloquently describes anyone's post-break up blues with lyrics "Got this feeling when I heard your name the other day, couldn't say it, couldn't make it go away...we can't be friends we can't be enemies." Lead singer Corin Tucker's voice is menacing, very distinctive, nervous and intense, but its also fun. The song I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone playfully crosses the once rigid gender lines of a rock n roll star, "I wanna be your Joey Ramone, pictures of me on your bedroom door, invite you back after the show, I'm the queen of rock & roll." The whole album will make you want to the hell rock out plus its truly an important part of musical herstory.

36 years ago today, the United States Supreme Court settled a case resulting in a landmark decision allowing for the legalization of abortion. The decision was based on right to privacy under the Due Clause of the 14th Amendment and overturned state & federal laws effectively ensuring women have the right to determined what's best for themselves (duh).

Nevertheless, it's still a polemic issue but as President Obama stated in his inauguration address, "we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics."

Check out this video from Jean Grae featuring LL's Lynette Astaire addressing the harsh reality many young girls face.

Positive Energy for 2009

Don't front; you know if you grew up in the 90's you've watched Only the Strong at least once. It's still the most notable American film with capoeira at its core. You can't forget the fluid kicks, pseudo-synchronized movement, that song and well; guys with their shirts off; most notably Marc Dacascos. Hollywood kind of got it right but they didn't dig too deep. History is hardly ever the point of those guy or gal with a heart of gold saves inner-city kids flicks that were popular back in the day.

Capoeira is a vital part of Afro-Brazilian culture. For slaves capoeira was a tool used to preserve one's culture; to entertain and uplift the spirits of communities. Some believe it to be a secret martial art developed by free Maroons to keep Portuguese slave traders at bay.

The Brazilian government was so fearful of capoeira that it was banned in 1890. It wasn't until the 1930s that Mestre Bimba convinced the government of its cultural value. Today people all over the world are getting in on the action one way or another. On random days when the weather is agreeable you can watch capoeiristas at Union Square in New York City. If you're more of a couch potato there are almost 50,000 capoeira videos on YouTube. After watching some of the videos you'll definitely want to do a couple of kicks yourself! Men, women -- even pregnant ones -- and children regardless of age participate.

Capoeira is unique because of its fusion of dance, music and martial arts.
The tempo of the music played during a capoeira exhibition determines the nature of the game. If the music is slow, capoeira resembles a fluid waltz rather than a fight, but with fast-paced music it's more of a battle. While there are circle kicks, slapping movements and acrobatics, capoeira is no longer meant to be used as a weapon. The purpose of the game is to trap your opponent while staying in step with them and countering their moves. Capoeira is more than a martial art. It's a celebration of history, music, passion, dance and struggle.
-----

Next Thursday, Ladies Lotto New York members and their friends can experience the energy and action that is capoeira.

Our guide to capoeira, Leticia Monteiro (a.k.a. Formiguinha) is a certified pilates instructor and ranked Brazilian martial artist. She'll briefly discuss the history of capoeira and get us ready to face the night with an introductory 45-minute class.

We'll provide light fare and non-alcoholic beverages. You'll bring your voice, an open mind and your energy. Axe!

A Screening Near You

Did you know New York has the 4th highest rate of cervical cancer in the country? Since the introduction of the Pap smear in the 1940s, the death rate for cervical cancer has dropped more than 70%. Studies show cervical cancer is usually caused by the human papilloma virus, or HPV -- a common STD. However, only a few high risk strains (there are more than 100!) cause cervical cancer.

January is cervical cancer screening month: If one of your resolutions was to take better care of yourself, getting screened is a great start to better health. Your reproductive health affects overall health!

Click here to find out more about Pap smears and cervical cancer screening or here to learn about the HPV test.

Anthropologie Craft Workshops

Anthropologie stores around the country are hosting a series of reinvention workshops, teaching shoppers how to get more out of the existing items in their wardrobes. Past seminars have been devoted to making hair accessories, wrapping packages with scarves, reinventing plush toys, refashioning blouses and revamping last year's gloves and hats.

To find out when the next one is in your area, check with your local store.

Squash It

Kabocha Squash, or the Japanese Pumpkin, is tender, creamy, fragrant, and sweet. Not pretty to look at with a dull green bumpy skin, it more than makes up for it in flavor! It tastes sweet potato and is one of the most flavorful of the hard squash.

This thing is loaded with beta carotene along with vitamin C, iron and potassium as well as folic acid (good for your pum pum), calcium, and trace B vitamins.

You can make it with ease - warm up the oven to 350 degrees, cut the squash in half, empty the seeds, place in a lightly oiled oven dish with lid and bake for approx 30-40 minutes. Voila! You've got an incredible delicacy ready to eat.

There are other ways to make it. Here are some more recipes to explore:

Members of the Month - January 2009

Tammy Le | Los Angeles

As the co-founder of LOVEMADE -- with partner and fellow LLLA chapter organizer Linda --Tammy Le (AKA, Tammy Lovemade) is truly a party machine. Throughout the year she and Linda crank out events that make Angelenos get up off their asses and move!

Don't let the cute face and great style fool you, Tammy's a triple threat; responsible for LOVEMADE's marketing, PR and events. What did you expect from a lady who graduated with a BA in business administration and marketing from CSU Fullerton?

Prior to LOVEMADE, Tammy worked for a marketing firm, casted music videos including Janet Jackson's "So Excited" and Outkast's "Don't Chu Worry."

If you ever feel the need to live vicariously through Tammy and her crew, take a gander at the LOVEMADE blog or listen to some tracks from her personal playlist:

Erica Zelaya | Seattle

Erica Zelaya's a bit like Helen of Troy but instead of launching ships, she's launched some of the biggest things to hit the gaming world. Erica's 10+ years of experience in merchandising, communications and events has contributed to Xbox's video game domination. She gives good press; Xbox LIVE, Xbox 360, Gears of War and Ninja Gaiden II have made their way to premier news outlets on Erica's watch.

In addition to launching games, she helps to keep them afloat by managing several video game trade shows including Leipzig, E3, and the Tokyo Game Show.

When she's not busy figuring out ways to distract our men (and women) with action-filled gorefests, she enjoys traveling to locales including Tokyo, London, New York, Paris, Frankfurt and Mexico City; where she enjoys sampling their culture and cuisine. Some of her favorite spots are Il Barrio Latino (Paris), See Sound (Seattle), Koi (LA) and Why Curry (New York).

Erica is known for never passing up a good deal on designer shoes and loves playing with make-up even when she's not modeling or acting. When Erica feels like making a little trouble her partner in crime is usually Ladies Lotto's chapter organizer Sarah Hunt. No matter what Erica's doing, she's got game!

Dove Clark | New York

What do you do when you've got $150 left to your name after a cross-country move in 2004; a solid background in business and nightlife; and mad love for independent hip hop? If you're Dove Clark, you're going to start PR, marketing and multimedia firm Tygereye Entertainment and rep an eclectic array of artists.

Luckily her previous roles as
Alternatives Editor for AllHipHop.com, and Senior Editor for RIME Magazine helped prepare her for her dream job. In addition to editing she's also written for Elemental Magazine, YRB Magazine, Ozone Magazine and more.

Dove has worked with hip hop artists including the ballin
Jim Jones, Cipha Sounds, The Rock Steady Crew, the DipSkate team, Jeru The Damaja and she of the massive neck, back and crack pains; Khia. Current clients include Amadeus, Jacki-O, Jah Cure, Archie Eversole, Urban Mystic, Jamie Jones, Nu Jerzey Devil, J the S, Illogic, David RUSH, E.S.G. and Sally Anthony.

Tygereye has been an incredibly successful venture thus far, and there's more to come in the future. Dove's going to keep rising to the top cause there 'aint no half stepping for this hip hop head!

Yemisi Odedina | Chicago

Yemisi (pictured at left, with LLCHI chapter organizer Susan Morgan) has been down with Ladies Lotto's Chicago chapter since day one. She frequently serves as Susan's finance fairy godmother at LLCHI events.

After receiving a degree in business administration in finance from HBCU, Howard University, Yemisi landed an account manager position at media planning agency, Starcom Worldwide. Yemisi's major client is insurance giant, Allstate. Through Starcom Worldwide's leveraging of print, television and other media, Allstate was able to reposition itself as a trusted and relevant service.

Throughout the course of her life, Yemisi's realized she's cut out for more than the major listed on her degree. She'd like to continue exploring her interests including financial planning, travel, music, fashion, health awareness and community service.

Holy six degrees of separation! Tammy casted Janet Jackson's "So Excited" video which features Dove's former client Khia.

Sprouse Up Your Life

Deitch Project's gallery presents Stephen Sprouse's work in a retrospective exhibition

A futuristic view of rock&roll, Rock On Mars shows Sprouse's pop-influenced paintings of iconic and rebellious figures including Sid Vicious and Iggy Pop, which have rarely been viewed before. The exhibition is also showing a selection of the video works that originally accompanied his runway shows, as well as examples of his fabric and furniture design and his fifty most influential fashion looks.

In memoriam to Sprouse's collaboration with Louis Vuitton in 2001, Marc Jacobs has created a new collection for Louis Vuitton. The new limited edition Stephen Sprouse – Louis Vuitton collection are now available in Louis Vuitton stores worldwide.

Stephen Sprouse (1953-2004) was one of the most influential fashion designers of his time and played a key role in the punk rock, wild style graffiti, and street influenced fashion movements that characterized the downtown New York community in the early 1980s. He was one of the first to build on the work of Andy Warhol to create a fusion of art, music and fashion.

Smush Needs a Home NYC

Smush is the most fun big blob of a cat ever. She looks a bit like a polar bear, a bit like a cow and a little bit like Skeletor from He-Man. A native New Yorker she is an unusual beastie who will win your heart with her silly antics. She loves to sit in the sink until you turn the water on right on top of her head and then drink directly from the faucet amongst other things.

Unfortunately, Smush's family has to give her up for adoption due to newly developed allergies. If you or anyone you know is interested in adopting her, please contact LLNY member Jan Kodadek (jkodadek@gmail.com).

What started out as a humble little prank has grown into an international phenomena. Today is the 8th annual No Pants Subway Ride. Thousands of pant-less men and women across the globe will descend on the metro, subway, etc., in this mass exercise in punking the public. If you'd like to join in -- next year I'll be there;
with no pants on -- check out the events we located in chapter cities.

It's a prank but it's pretty serious; read the instructions carefully. Also, keep the thong and crotchless panties/briefs at home; this event is supposed to entertain -- not to get anyone arrested.

Some Swedish Favorites

Since I'm spending a couple of weeks back home, this blog entry is dedicated to my snowy country up north, Sweden. With the fact that the Swedish music industry is rockin' and we are producing talents that are popular all over the world, I decided to put together a 2008 top list, with talented music acts worth keeping an eye on in the year of 2009 too.

1. Kleerup
Kleerup is a DJ and producer who has been quite busy the past year. His self-titled debut album offers some great electronic beats together with strings and drums embedded in the beautiful voices from pop princesses such as Robyn, Lykke Li and Neneh Cherry. This album is an evidence of a succesful collaboration with talented female artists and a Swedish electrobeat master. All you have to is listen. And then dance of course.

Kleerup is also behind the beats of Robyn's "With every heartbeat" that scored the first spot at the British charts in 2007.

2. Veronica Maggio
A Swedish beauty with Italian background composes sweet jazz beats and sassy pop lyrics. Her debut single " dumpa mig " (Dump me) was climbing the hit lists in the beginning of 2006. Since then her albums has been well received and she has been nominated for several awards. Even though Swedish is not your native language, I could highly recommend this Swedish soul star.

3. Timo Räisänen
A Swedish/ Finnish guitar guy with an Indian mother. He started backing up for bands such as The Embassy and Håkan Hellström. After playing for others for a couple of years, he went solo. The title of his album debut was influenced by his Indian heritage and was named "I'm an indian". Listen to Timo Räisänen if you enjoy heavy rock, accompanied with seducing strings and a powerful voice. Timo's music is an explosion of feelings, soul and powerful rock-pop. 2008 was a good year for this rock n roll guy. He released his third album "...and then there was Timo", was out touring and participated in a Swedish game show (!).

4.
Adam Tensta
The last name of this hip hop artist is taken from a Swedish suburb outside Stockholm. A place that is known for its diversity when it comes to nationalities and etnicities. "My cool" from his debut album "It's a Tensta Thing" was played frequently in clubs and at radio stations all over Sweden. What makes this hip hop artists unique is the fact he is able to mix genres such as hip hop, electro, pop, house and grime in a perfect combo.

5.
Anna Ternheim
Anna Ternheim is a Swedish sing and songwriter with a deep, powerful voice that reaches all the way to your deepest soul. She released her debut album in Sweden 2004, and released her international album in 2007. She has a bluesy sound, with dark and complex folk rock tunes. Live, Anna often is only armed by an acoustic guitar, a piano and her ipod as backing band.

She was the queen of 2008 Swedish Grammy awards and received prizes for Best Album of the year and Best Female Artist. Her latest album "Leaving on a mayday" was produced by Björn Yttling from Peter, Björn and John. A busy producer who is behind productions from Lykke Li, Shout Out Louds and Sahara Hotnights.
