Just read an interesting article in of all things, National Geographic, about Double Dutch . The name Double Dutch is slang for something confusing or difficult, it's also an insult dating back to the 1800's when the British mocked the Dutch language.
A predominantly girls sport, it was introduced to the "New Amsterdam" aka New York City in the 1600's by who else, the Dutch. However, it wasn't until the 1940's when young Blacks & Jews pioneered the sport, introducing it to cities across the US. Subsequently, its become a global phenomenon.
In fact, starting this spring, Double Dutch will become a varsity sport in all New York City public schools. How long until Crunch offers a Double Dutch class?
