Homebodies Recap

On June 8th, Ladies Lotto presented Homebodies: A How-To Guide for Home, Sweet Home which provided tips and tools for buying a home. The presenters took attendees through the entire home buying process. Rolan Shnayder of Home Owners Mortgage shed light on the the financial advantages of buying, the loan process and discussed the different types of loans. Guests learned that a mortgage can be a challenge if you have less than perfect credit. Anthony Davenport, of Regal Financial Solutions showed them there are some things a consumer can do to change their score and he can help ensure those changes happen quickly.

Ladies Lotto Members Mara Ingram, a licensed Real Estate Agent with Corcoran, Jordana M. Gutman, P.C./Real Estate Attorney and Kiki T., a recent home buyer also presented. Presentations were followed by a Q&A session and a tour of the newest and best valued condominium in Downtown Brooklyn, Be@Schermerhorn.

For as long as we can possibly remember sneakers have always been apart of fashion and style. The hip hop culture has made it even more popular to rock a pair of kicks. LLADY KILLER: Rammellzee

Graffiti writer, performance artist, musician and sculptor, Ramellzee passed away yesterday.

Accredited to major influence of artists such as The Beastie Boys, Ramellzee was an out of this world artist who worked with Basquiat and gained much notoriety from Charlie Ahearn's film Wild Style. His self-made costumes rival those of Grace Jones and Lady Gaga. His spirit of artistic expression will be missed.

Funk Fest: NYC June 30th

Sweden's best dance label Trunkfunk Records is coming to New York for a DJ set at Ella tonight. Berlin-based, Gothenburg -born DJ, producer and Trunkfunk Records label owner Fredrik Nyberg has long been a key player in Sweden's music scene.

Tonight he is DJing with DJ La Fleur (Stockholm) and Brooklyn based Faux Mex. Trunkfunk just celebrated their 10 year anniversary with an outstanding compilation of pure electro house. Get it here

Modern Mamahood: 3 Tips for a Calm, Safe Baby Jet-Setter

We've all been there. You were looking forward to a relaxing flight, which has now been hijacked by a screaming baby or two somewhere on the plane. But now the tables are turned and you are the one who has been hoping, praying and finger-crossing that your baby will not be that baby. Here are a few tips to help keep your baby as chill as possible.

1. Care
Get the okay to travel from your pediatrician if your baby is just a few months old. Bring extra blankets. Don't forget a baby carrier or stroller to navigate through the airport (you can check the stroller). Never fly with a hungry baby. The TSA allows bottles of juice, breast milk, formula and of course breast feeding (the 3.4oz liquid limit doesn't apply here, and they don't need to be in plastic bags). Bring or buy snacks. Another well-known trick to avoid the pressure change that often causes screaming babies is to make sure your baby is drinking something during take-off and landing.


2. Safety
Options for safe travel with your baby include keeping your baby in its own car seat, or for babies over 22lb, buy a child seatbelt strap add-on such as this one with rave-reviews called CARES. Check with your airline, but most allow babies under the age of 2yrs old to ride on laps for free. While this saves money, and is a common practice, do your research to help make this very personal decision. Remember to check your car seat (for free at most airlines!) so that in case your luggage is lost, you can still leave the airport safely with your baby.


3. Temperament
Make sure to bring some super cool new toys, (keyword = new...or forgotten about), to capture your baby's attention by pulling them out one at a time. Depending on their age and how aware they are of their surroundings, this could mean a Baby Einstein Baby MP3 Player (worked wonders for us at 4mo), or a few new DVD's with their favorite characters (which would be the plan now at almost 12mo). If your baby is teething, bring plenty of chew-toys and teething tablets! And very important -- get to the airport much earlier than usual to deal with all the security and check-in procedures that take more time with baby along.

Good luck, mamas! Just remember...if your baby is not feeling well, sleep-deprived, hating the plane, or just in a bad mood -- you'll probably never see these people again, so just smile and stay focused on your little one.

2010 Warm Up Schedule

The Creators Project: Vice X Intel

The Creators Project, a collaboration from Vice Magazine and Intel, marked a celebration of culture, media and technology. Held at Milk Studios in NYC this past weekend, 4 floors dedicated to a barrage of music, technology, ideas, film and an open bar by SKYY spirits helped captivate the attention of the city's creative set (read: press, hipsters, cool cats and scofflaws).

"The Creators Project has two mandates: on one hand it’s a modern day media channel that we will continually identify and celebrate the work of visionary artists wherever they are. On the other hand it is also a content creation studio, an arts foundation of sorts that will facilitate the production and dissemination of new work with these artists and their collaborators."

The space held interactive media, dreamy pieces of art and top players in music such as the long anticipated debut of South African hipster zef force, Die Antwoord (ninja pictured below performing).

More than a party, this was an experience for all. Kudos to Intel for shelling out the change to make this more than just a corporate rave.

Il Cielo: Sky Ferreira

Sky Ferriera is a singer-songwriter in the vein of Marina & the Diamonds and La Roux and Ladie's Lotto has the scoop on this young artist for you. Her style might make you think that she is far beyond her 17 years when she wears vintage dresses from all over the world (check out her fashion feature in Elle Magazine). However, her electro fused pop songs are pure youth that would have the teenagers heading for the dance floor. Her single 17, available now on Itunes from E.M.I., could easily fit in with the current pop music world (although I don't think her sound is quite as developed as that of the on-the-rise Marina & the Diamonds). If you listen to the lyrics of this tune, she definitely does not let you forget her age. Besides the title, the lyrics discuss her age as a "dirty little secret" when she's drinking with her friends "at the nightclub." Sky's lyrical focus on her age could make people focus on this subject more than her music. What are your thoughts: does it pigeon-hole the burgeoning pop star as a teen singer or can she grow into a successful 20 something pop act?

Her voice and electro style also bring a new sound to a very edgy cover of "Happiness is a Warm Gun" by the Beatles. You can check out this cover on her Myspace- it is listed under the name "Happy Dre" and is produced by Daniel Luttrell. I really like what she did with this song; her young feminine voice brings a new sound to this classic song. The beats on the song make me sad that I can't dance even a little in my non-air conditioned apartment without breaking a serious sweat.

For now, I will keep her single 17 in my pregame playlist; at least while I can still understand the fear of getting caught with a fake id. I can definitely dance to this beat but, as her song says, "I wonder how long she can last before she falls." I look forward to seeing her mature and see what comes from Sky Ferreira. I for one will be happy to buy her debut record if she develops into Marina's style of respectable, confident, and sexy womanhood as opposed to Ke$ha's party animal, drink till you drop, hot mess style pop act.

Dirty Old Town

For those lucky enough to catch last night's sneak preview of Dirty Old Town, a feature film produced by LL's Stephanie Porto, you probably found this independent movie to be as charming as its producer.

Synpopsis: The Bowery becomes a nexus of shattered dreams when a merchant has 72 hours to pay his rent. Facing extinction, his ramshackle tent of antiquities lures a troop of misfits, freaks and renegades who form a tableaux vivant full of carnival pageantry, white lies and victimless crime in a fleeting glimpse of Downtown New York.

Killer Shoes Not Killing the Piggy Bank

As women the one thing we live for are shoes. Kitten heels, platforms, flats, and stilettos. Whatever your poison is, we tend to kill our piggy banks in the process. Now more than ever heels are taking over the fashion world. The crazy styles, colors, and of course the inches they seem to add to the heel.

The double platform heels are your best friend, even though they may look like they are made to kill someone. Yes, the heels are deceiving, making you believe the shoes have a higher arch then they really do. The booties are always cute; however you have to be smart on your selection. It’s important to get a pair of booties that aren’t made up of heavy fabric or else it is too wintry. The 80%20 booties (first shoe on second row) are perfect because it is made out of a light fabric, the colors are cool for the season and it has ventilation for the feet. There isn’t much explanation needed when it comes to the sandals, or the basic heel.

Modern Mamahood: Self-Hypnosis for Less Pain on D-Day

Delivery day is one of the most anticipated days in a woman's life. What we do to prepare for it (or how many horror stories we hear) can make or break our experience. From Vitamin E and Primrose Oil to work on expanding the last stop down the canal, to scheduling a spinal and a c-section, women will do nearly anything to avoid experiencing the kind of severe pain we've been warned about.

What if you could train your mind to minimize the pain associated with the experience? I'm not talking about an epidural or the body-numbing intravenous drugs they hand out in the delivery room, I'm talking about self-hypnosis.

Thousands of women have studied self-hypnosis for childbirth and have successfully delivered without the use of any drugs or medical interventions. Self-hypnosis is considered a method of coping and pairs nicely with natural childbirth.

If this kind of birth experience is a goal for you, I personally recommend the home-study program by Hypnobabies. I've also heard Hypnobirthing is another good program, using a slightly different approach. To study self-hypnosis at home, you are given a workbook and several prep and delivery day audio scripts you can load onto your iPod. Other learning options include a hypno-doula or group classes.

My experience with Hypnobabies rocked. I was completely zen on my delivery day. The nurses didn't believe I was actually experiencing such hard contractions because of my chill reaction to it all. Practicing self-hypnosis was a stimulating mental challenge for me, and the 30min of peace it required each day was a great balance to the looney pregnancy hormones. I will definitely be doing this again for #2.

Full Figured Fashion Week

Every year, twice a year we watch the same slim models walk down the catwalk. Strutting their stuff in those slinky tiny dresses, fitted jeans, close to nothing tops and think, well gosh that’s definitely not what I look like. Knowing that as gorgeous as each item you see is something you would love to wear, but that isn’t how you’re shaped. Real women have hips, boobs, butt and sometimes some love handles. Where are those girls at? Where can I go see those fashion shows and those outfits? Well all is not lost.

Full figured fashion week, is here for its second year, and definitely making their strides. Made to cater to the curvier women out there. To show us what the fashion world has to offer. Not the outfits that were originally made for the skinner girl and they extended it to size 18. This event showcases the designers who only cater to the lady who are blessed with more curves than others.

From June 16 -19, FFF will be hosted by Model Icon Emme. The event includes a fashion show, a shopping excursion, panel discussions, and a red carpet event along with a VIP cocktail reception. Designers will include Monif C Plus Size, Pure Energy, and Angel Alternative just to name a few.

What is OneHungryMama.com? What can moms find here?

One Hungry Mama is an online resource for age-specific, family-friendly recipes, tips, techniques and products to help parents satisfy their own hunger and inspire healthy hungers in their children. Being a Hungry Mama (or Papa!) means you can whip up something quick and delicious, shop on a budget and still buy all-natural ingredients, and even cater to different ages and tastes without making separate meals. The recipes are categorized by meal type, ingredient and age so that busy mamas and pops can access them as easily as possible. Users can even create a recipe box to hold their favorites. We busy parents need as many time savers as possible!

When and why did you start OHM?

I was blogging at another site in partnership with the person I developed a frozen organic baby food brand with for over a year when I decided, in February 2010, to strike out on my own. Though One Hungry Mama has only been live for about 4 or 5 months, there is over a year and a half worth of content available on the site.

How did the site grow?

Organically (no pun intended)! I just started blogging more and more, introducing my writing to publications that I like, collaborating with like-minded food bloggers, posting comments on other blogs, and building a following by having conversations on Twitter. Basically, I became part of the food and family-food blogging communities. I'm an active participant in these communities because I care about the issues, want to know what others think and exchange ideas for how we can all do as good a job as possible feeding our families without killing ourselves (it's hard to fit cooking in!). From there, word about One Hungry Mama spread.

Do you have other work outlets beyond your blog?

I just had a second baby (he's 8 months now), so I slowed down for a while to spend time with him and also make sure that I continued to have quality time with older son (3 1/2 years old). I do a lot of recipe testing professionally and freelance writing about families and food. I also do some consulting in educational children's media, the industry in which I built a career before I had kids. I have a Master's in developmental psychology and used to help develop preschool television and interactive games, ensuring that media was developmentally appropriate. That stuff is a fun diversion and comes so naturally. It's also plain fun and, just like my food writing, helps me impact families in a positive way.

Do you ever have issues balancing work with family life? Any tips on balancing?

Sure. Don't we all! I'm just learning how to maintain balance effectively now--two kids and two careers in! I also think that balance isn't the same for everyone. I guess the biggest lesson for me that might be useful to others is to honestly reflect on who you are and what you need as an individual. That will be different for all of us. But, if you can take care of yourself, you will take care of your family better. The research says it all: the biggest indicator of child mental health is mother's mental health. So, basically, if you're happy, your kids are happy. So, if working full time makes you happy, go for it. Make sure your kids have quality child care and make the time you do spend with them focused and quality.

For me, I love working from home. I'm able to close my kids out when I'm focused on work. I don't get between them and their sitter. I also keep a serious schedule. I know in advance when I'm working, when I'm going to spend time with one or both of the kids, and when I'm going to give myself a pedicure break! It keeps me from getting too absorbed in one thing and then feeling stressed about all the other things I didn't deal with.

Write It Right

Paper Pastries is an adorable greeting card and stationery company based in Los Angeles, CA. I stopped by their table at Renegade Craft Fair last weekend in McCarren Park in Williamsburg and completely fell in love with the cute patterns, witty greetings and simple design. Their selection included some lovely greetings cards, cute notebooks and other creative things. Some of my favorites include the “I left my heart in {pick your city} postcard collection and custom designed traditional pens.
