Date Night

As the layers have come off from all the cuddling sessions, couples are sadly splitting and the singles begin to mingle. Instead of dating the same usual guys you always date, time to try out something new and exciting. New York City is filled with a nice wide range of men, you have the Rocker, the Boy Next Door, the thrill seeker, and the Wall street guy just to name a few.

The rocker boy is someone you will find hanging out with the boys, if you’re lucky he will sometimes even be a biker boy. Where could you go wrong with that one? You would usually think leather, lace and spikes, where here is a classy, sexy touch for such a date.

The thrill seeker is usually a guy who is willing to try anything once and will have you on the seat of your edge. He is willing to show you a different side of the city that you have never seen before. But hey you’re always willing to try something new. This outfit is set for you to try anything once, just make sure you hold on tight to that strapless bra if he’s trying to take you on that bunji jumping trip he’s talked so much about.

The boy next door has always been the guy you’ve wanted to date. Whether the football player, baseball player, skateboarder or just the misunderstood kid. He’s been the one you’ve always looked at from afar. So on this date you still would like to capture a bit of your young woman innocence. Some things should change but only with time. Show him you are still the same girl but a more grown woman look.

Concealer 101

Concealer comes in a liquid or creme form and is an essential product to getting a perfect skin through makeup. It's a color corrector that is applied over dark circles under your eyes, red blemishes, pimples or any other discoloration you have on your skin before the usage of any other foundation.

We use the color wheel concept for picking the right colors for the concealer. If you have red blemishes or red pimples, you want to use the color opposite from the red on the color wheel which is green or blue. If you have dark under eye circles which is usually in the blue tone, you would want to use a concealer that has a warmer red or salmon tone. If you have a brown or red discoloration over your eyelids, again you would use the blue or green tone to conceal.

I would recommend using a small brush to dab it onto the part you want to cover. Do not take big brush strokes like you are painting. After applying it, you can blend the concealer with your finger or sponge in the dabbing action, and then set it with powder.

SATC 2: The Dilemna

Let me preface by saying, that like so many women in New York and across the globe, I will be flocking to the Sex and the City 2 premiere tomorrow, fashioned like a true Sex and the City groupie, with a gang of my best girlfriends. No, I’m not ashamed to admit this. Sex and the City has consistently served as a forum for solidifying and indulging in your best female friendships since season one! Whether for the fashion, the relationships, the girl talk, or yes, the sex – the show has united hordes of women wanting to celebrate their womanhood and friendships. And let's face it, whether you loved or hated the show, you really can’t be mad at that.

You can however, be intrigued – and I certainly am. Why is it that Sex and the City not only draws countless throngs of women, but draws these women from all backgrounds and ethnicities, even if they aren’t represented in a substantial and meaningful way in the series/films.

It’s probably best to point out here that among the group of friends that I am celebrating the movie premiere weekend with, not one of us is of the same racial background. Believe me when I tell you that we talk as candidly as the film's characters about our hopes, dreams, relationships, and yes, even our sex lives. What I’ve found is that the cultural differences, and what we all bring to the table regarding our views on men, sexuality, gender roles, and relationships provides an even more colorful picture of the complexities and facets of womanhood than even the best Sex and the City episode! Granted, our script might not be as punchy, clever, or well-written, but you get my point.

Suffice it to say that I’m someone who grew up immersed in considerable diversity and I generally have a very inclusive attitude about people, which my friend circles tend to emulate. My mother told me when I was very young that no one was better than me because they had more money, and that I wasn’t better than anyone else because of the color of my skin.

Which brings me directly to my only real "issues" with Sex and the City. After stripping down the “fun-girls-night-out-live-vicariously-through-Carrie” elements that I admittedly engage in, two issues remain: the problem of class and the problem of race. While considering the transformative and trend-setting elements of the series and the first movie in regard to topics, the exploration of relationships, and all things fashion; it’s sobering to realize that the show really only represents a very small sub-group or niche of women, all of the same socio-economic class, and all of the same race. The question must then be asked, "how is it that a series that focuses solely on one segment of one demographic can attract and captivate followers of all classes and all races?" Could the explanation possibly be, that at the end of the day, despite our commitment to diversity in our daily lives, we just want to escape to a more glamorous, more heightened sense of life, void of the responsibility of representing diversity? Do women essentially give Sex and the City a "pass" because it's just so damn fabulously indulgent?

For a show that has been a true trend-setter in virtually every other area, and has evolved considerably on many levels, why has it not evolved in the way of multi-culturalism? Sadly, maybe, just maybe, what we are seeing here, is a golden, but missed, opportunity for an intriguing and iconic series/movie, to bring a truly authentic, genuine representation of mixed-race friendships to the silver screen.

Having said all of that, I’m still immensely excited to go see Sex and the City 2. My friends and I will be dressed to the nines in beautiful, chic dresses, wearing killer shoes and sipping cocktails well into the night. But as I look around at our group, there will be a little part of me that knows no matter how hard we try, we’ll never be exactly like “Carrie and the Girls.” But we will be distinctly “us” and that isn’t in any way second-rate. In fact, that alone makes real friendships much better than the stuff of movies.

Modern Mamahood: "Washing the Mom Off"

If you've ever cared for a newborn 24/7...prepare to relate (and chuckle)!

An excerpt from "Washing the Mom Off" By Lana Perry:

It’s been another long day filled with milky, drooly burp cloths, pee-filled diapers so heavy you could break a window with them, and the never-ending cycle of picking-up, putting-away, and washing. You take a quick glance at the clock, and realize the day is almost over. Is that happiness that’s overcoming you? Well try not to be too excited; you’re supposed to be enjoying every moment of being a mommy especially since it “goes by so fast” as they always say. Still, if the day is almost over, that means your man is coming home soon, which is hopefully something still semi-exciting for you (it’s the little things!).

Because of all your hard work all day, your home is in good enough order and ::gasp::, your little one is napping! Now please take a moment to survey your situation and appreciate how rare moments like these are, where the stars have aligned in a way that would actually allow you to do something not baby or home related, something for that person you so frequently forget about…YOU! If you are fortunate enough to be in this predicament, a second shower for the day is the recommended course of action because admit it, you smell (damn hormones!). And don’t even think about hopping on the laptop for a minute, because this rare window of opportunity will vanish as fast as your little one can spit up.

Instead, what I want you to do, is...(read the instructions HERE.

How App'd: XE Currency App

When traveling abroad it's prudent to know how much your dollar is worth. The exchange rate fluctuates daily and depending on where you're headed, your crisp little green friend could be gaining or losing value. The XE Currency app is just the perfect tool to help you figure out exactly what's going on if you are not a banker, financial analyst or other persons well versed in the exchange rate.

Since the app -- like the basic site -- is free, only mid-market rates are shown. Mid-market rates aren't "buy or sell" rates. Instead, they fall somewhere in between; an approximation of sorts. Depending on where you do your exchange the rate can be higher or lower than mid-market figures. XE Currency app users can access more than 180 currencies and monitor 10 at any given time (great if you're country hopping). With a flick of the wrist rates are updated. The app is both web based and available for offline use so you can calculate rates in the middle of nowhere.

No matter what you do or which exchange calculation site or app you use, be sure to shop around for the best rates. Exchange agencies such as Travelex don't always offer the best rates. Sometimes it's best to go to a bank (shop around here too), withdraw money from an ATM when you reach your destination or just use a debit or credit card. While your bank or credit card company may charge a fee between 1-3% for exchanging the funds, it's safer than carrying wads of cash around.

Available for: iPhone, iPod Touch and Blackberry
Cost: Free
Pro: Have access to a reliable conversion tool (automatic conversion online; manual conversion offline).
Con: The rates shown are an approximation; it can go either way.

Taken By Trees

Swedish singer Victoria Bergsman is mostly known for singing the female part in Peter Bjorn and John's number one hit Young Folks. Bergsman also creates music under the name Taken By Trees, an amazing contemporary indie project that is performing live in New York tonight.

Her latest album East Of Eden is a beautiful saga inspired by her recent adventures far east. With the goal in mind to record music with Pakistan folk musicians Bergsman headed east to search for Sufi musicians to play with. The task turned out to be hard, as female musicians were not welcome in the culture. Despite pretty complex circumstances Bergsman found a group of Pakistan sufi musicians to play with. Composing with Pakistan musicians was a first for Victoria, hearing their own recordings was a first for the group of sufi musicians she played with. Her commitment and creativity brought her closer to them and resulted in East Of Eden, an outstanding combination of soft Swedish indie tunes and exotic sufi sounds. Her soft voice in combination with Pakistan folk music is definitely one of a kind.

Taken By Trees is performing live in NYC at Le Poisson Rouge tonight at 10:00PM. Her performances are always lovely, she bring tons of innovation and her inspiration from far east on stage. During her last tour she screened the documentary that was made about her inspirational route to Pakistan. The incredible video is made by noted video director Marcus Soderlund, and is a must see. Korallreven (Acephale Records) is DJing after the show.

Ellen Rodgers

Ellen Rodgers is a alternative photographer from the UK.
At only 26 she has already worked with top magazines such as i.d and Dazed & confused.

For those who are unaware of the term 'alternative photography' this is experimentation with various chemicals, film and print.

Rodgers spends days in her darkroom based in London, where she makes her own chemicals. She is also experimenting on moving film, which is in now in production.

Her work is very moody and cinematic, reminding us of the old Charlie Chaplin films from the silent film era . Her dreamy scenes and clear fascination with religion, scripture and acient history take her imagery to a whole new level.

This is yet another UK lady to look out for! DO check out her website...www.ellenrodgers.co.uk.

Creativity as Leadership Competency

I've said it many times, and I'll say it again: "Creativity is the key to everything." Despite it being my personal mantra, it turns out that creativity can even help you land a job.

In a recent article by
Yahoo Finance, a survery of over 1,500 CEO's identified "creativity" as the most important leadership competency above all others, including operational effectiveness, influence, and even dedication.

The article goes on to say that "against that backdrop of interconnection, interdependency, and complexity, business leaders around the world are declaring that success requires fresh thinking and continuous innovation at all levels of the organization." That means that creative thinking and action can be used tactically, to accomplish the following business-related objectives: disrupting the status quo, expanding existing business models and overcoming organizational paralysis.

"A world of increasing complexity will give rise to a new generation of leaders that make creativity the path forward for successful enterprises."

In addition to letting our creative juices flow in the traditional locales, such as studios, theaters, and street corners, we can bring true innovation and creative thought into conference rooms and board rooms as well. While rejecting the traditional 9-to-5 lifestyle in the name of art, expression, and personal freedom may be true for some; we can now bring these artistic and creative values and talents to the workplace to embody and redefine the complete 21st century professional.

It's time to get creative about how we think about creativity itself - to enhance not only our souls but our professional lives as well.

Detox Not Botox!

We hear a lot about detoxifying… its kind of a buzzword really, but do we know why and how we should detoxify?

Well for starters, toxins surround us in urban environments: the air we breathe (pollution, smoke), water we drink (lead from pipes, chemicals from water sources), and food we eat (pesticides, chemically enhanced). Add the toxic effects of stress (cortisol) and you have a recipe for disaster!

So in essence, detoxification is basically a cleansing routine to reduce the body’s toxic load. Instead of calling Tyrone to deal with all this toxic baggage we have a better approach to healing and riding our bodies of excess built up toxins.

If you have complaints such as fatigue that you notice is in excess of what you regularly feel, or skin rashes like eczema, or even excess weight, its your bodies way of saying, “Yo, clean me out!”.

Here is a basic chart that everyone can follow to keep the body clean throughout the year:

Daily use: - Detox tea I recommend Triple Leaf Tea (A traditional Chinese Medicinal tea blend) has burdock and dandelion to cleanse blood.

-Fiber (adheres to fat and carries it out of colon, lowers cholesterol, bowel health)

-Probiotics (displaces harmful microbes, regulates immunity, enhances digestion)

-Green Foods (Sea moss, spirulina, chlorella all have concentrated nutrients and promote purification and rejuvenation)

-Red Foods (antioxidants, also fights infection and inflammation)

Also, consider an annual fast to really cleanse and eliminate. This site has great information on detoxification on every level: http://www.womentowomen.com/detoxification/naturalbodydetoxification.aspx

The Internet Saves Two Girls from Sex Trafficking

Just in case you thought the Internet could only be used for cute cat pics and porn, here comes a heartwarming story from community weblog Metafilter. It seems one of the site's posters had two Russian friends who were in danger of being trafficked by an unscrupulous "club promoter." The poster, who lives in Washington, D.C. but was traveling cross country by car, put a message on the Metafilter boards asking for help and advice.

Within minutes, messages of support and help began pouring in. Contacts to embassies, state agencies and trafficking organizations were provided. And users began pooling their resources to help the girls.

Despite his warnings, the two girls insisted that they meet their contact in NYC, but, thankfully, at the last minute, the girls changed their mind, and were aided in New York by members of the Metafilter community.

The summer time is known for one thing more than ever, beach season. This season is the most critical season for a woman to know her body type and what she can and CAN NOT wear. When we go bathing suit shopping we will take that one friend who will tend to tell us what we want to hear and not what we need to hear. Here are some things you should know about your body and what you can get away with

Hourglass Figure

You have an hourglass figure if you have full hip-line and your full bust-line is the same width and a small waist. You can wear any style of swimsuit. Try something that will show off your feminine curves.

Inverted Triangle

You have an inverted triangle body shape if you have a large bust with narrow hips.

You’ll want to choose a swimsuit that draws away from the bottom. With a high-cut neckline, with this swimsuit you will minimize the top and emphasize the bottom. Also, try a solid top with printed bottoms is your best bet for a two piece swimsuit.

Triangle or Pear Shape Body

The triangle body type is often also referred to as pear-shaped. You have this shape if your small bust-line is narrower than your full hip-line and you have a well defined waist. One-piece swimsuits visibly create the illusion of broader shoulders for a more balanced figure. If you prefer a two piece suit, halter-style tops with darker bottoms are a great choice.

Rectangle

You have a rectangle body if you have small to medium bust and full hip-line are about the same width and you have little waist definition. The main goal with this body type is to produce curves. Try belted bottoms or swimsuits that have cutout, also try boy shorts bottom to create curves.

About the design:
The goal was to provide inspiration for young urban professionals with busy lives, by creating an uncluttered, organized space that could comfortably accommodate entertaining and living life. From the bedroom and dining room to exercise room and rooftop terrace, Inson played with size, shape, style and light to completely transform this dream apartment into a place where couples will genuinely feel at home. Inson chose items from IKEA's array of eco-friendly products -everything from low maintenance, sleekly designed furniture, to lamps made of recycled plastics and decorative wall hangings made from all-natural materials. Inson's color concept captures the energetic vibe of newlywed couples. He kept the overall palette in grays, blues and whites, adding drama and warmth with red accents. The use of abstract oil paintings by young local artists compliments the neutral palette, providing both texture and depth to the showhome.
