LLove it or LLeave it? M.I.A.'s New Video: Born Free

M.I.A, Born Free from ROMAIN-GAVRAS on Vimeo.

This is the first chance I've had to sit down and blog about M.I.A.'s new video (see above). For those of you who have seen it, it's fairly heavy content as it is supposed to echo ethnic cleansing and/or racial profiling. It's kind of like when you were a little kid in school and played the game in class where all the kids with green eyes had to sit in one corner with no participation- this exercise was supposed to help kids understand the Holocaust.

I have a personal bias that for all intents and all purposes makes me scream and cheer for the video - as a way to get youth and popular culture talking about exclusionary ethnic, racial, sex, religious, etc practice (i.e., The Holocaust, Sudan, Rwanda, Bosnia, etc).

The timing of this video could not be more impeccable. With the recent passage of Arizona's SB 1070, the Illegal Immigration Bill that allows law enforcement to ask anyone suspicious (with undetermined reasoning) to show documentation of citizenship, it begets the question of, is this the next step for those who are not in line with the law?

Yet, I digress, what do you think of the new video? The song off of her forthcoming album seems to be just background noise to the imagery.

What do you think of the song and video? Is it as controversial as some are saying? Does it hearken to historical fact? Is she bringing this to the attention of popular culture for any reason? Is there a message?

Linda Lovemade x Mata Hari Handbag Collaboration

Hong Kong based handbag brand Mata Hari has collaborated with Ladies Lotto LA member Linda Nguyen (also known as Linda Lovemade) to present the “Linda” handbag as part of their Stylist Series for their fall 2010 collection.

The "Linda" is an accessory that embodies Linda's fun, modern and creative lifestyle. “I would describe the Lovemade design aesthetic as being focused on unique silhouettes, mixed with versatile and technical features. For this collaboration with Mata Hari, I wanted to create an original hand bag design that was unique in shape, function and detail while maintaining a luxury feel” says Linda.

The shape of the bag was inspired by the Lovemade heart logo and is available in two different colorways:

COLOR ME BAD - black suede base with magenta, and pastel shades of blue, yellow and purple leather appliqued on the surface of the bag in a mosaic-style pattern.

PEEK-A-BOO - a subtle and classic option, made of custom perforated leather with underlying gold foil that shines while peek-a-booing through the holes.

Other features include
gold hardware, a detachable shoulder strap to transform the bag into a clutch, zipper detail at the bottom of bag with optional chain hanging detail and zipped pockets.

The bags will be available July 2010 and will retail for $90 so it won't burn a hole in your pocket. Snag the bags at Lovemade or 80's Purple.

For inquiries, please email Heart@Love-Made.com

If you're new to the blog or group, you should know Linda and her business partner Tammy have been holding it down on the west coast for Ladies Lotto!

Queendom - No Man Rules in Kumbwada

In the northern Islamic region of Nigeria, where women must bow to the will of fathers and husbands, no man can sit on the throne in the kingdom of Kumbwada. "Male pretenders who dare try will be buried within a week." Men like the current queen's father have tested this legend and found it to be very true; he became violently ill after attempting to assume the throne.

It's hard to believe a woman rules while neighboring municipalities are subject to strict Sharia law. Sharia law permits whipping, amputation and stoning by death depending on the severity of a crime. In 2001 an unwed teen mother was given 100 lashes for adultery although she maintained she was raped by three men.

Rest assured it is a ladies first situation in Kumbwada. Queen Hajiya Haidzatu Ahmed is a benevolent ruler. Typically men are favored in cases of divorce and spousal abuse but Queen Hajiya sees those issues from another point of view:

"When domestic issues come to me, the way I treat them will be quite different to other traditional chiefs," she says. "I'm a woman and I'm a mother and I have so much concern and experience when it comes to the issue of marriage and what it means for the maintenance of the home and what it means for two people to live together."

Snap, Pop, and Rock It Into Shape!

LL, many of you are in NYC, and would love, i mean truly love what these original Bronx Boogie fly girls are doing to get women in shape, by incorporating Hip-Hop dance (and i mean the good stuff, party dances, popping, locking, and a little bit of that bboy/bgirl flava). This is Zumba with a Hip-Hop twist, and more strength/flexibility training added in! I have known these two dope sistas for over 15 years, and their experience, and commitment to reaching a new dynamic (women, especially of color) is truly commendable!

Snap, Pop, and Rock! Classes are @ Alvin Ailey every Sat. from 4:30-6pm, and also at Broadway Dance Center (monthly master classes).

Organic NYC Style Hip Hop for Health
(Choreographers/Teaching Artists/Health & Wellness Professionals)

SnapShot and WandeePop are pioneers of Hip Hop Freestyle Party Dancing and co-creators of Snap, Pop & Rock (name recently changed from Snap, Pop & Lock) dance and fitness workshop. SP&R combines hip hop technique drills (popping, Latin rocking, freestyle hip hop party dancing) with strength training, cardio endurance and flexibility combos. These Boogie Down Bronx Nuyoricans bring the streets into the studio by incorporating 'freestyle' into the combinations and attitude on the dance floor. Hip Hop should be experienced so the music compilations are just as important to give you the atmosphere of Peace, Unity, Love & having Fun. While learning technique and working up a sweat in the warm-up you will also have Hip Hop Trivia 101 where you will learn the history of dance moves, music, pioneers, style and health & wellness tips for injury prevention and well-being.

About Dani Panquin: Designer Dani Paquin founded Agapantha jewelry on a dusty road somewhere in the United States sometime in 2004. She wishes she could be more specific, but she was out touring the country with her guitar and she just can't be sure. Back in Brooklyn, between tours she worked assembling jewelry for other designers until she decided she had to bring her own designs and ideas to life. And so it was born and an important artistic shift was made. No longer would she tour the world with her music, but instead, with trays filled with her hand-crafted semi-precious jewelry.

How Earth Day Came About

Earth Day takes off 40 years ago today!

The history of Earth day is a great lesson in how at a grassroots level, a seed can take root, and blossom into a forest of consciousness, because of the power of people using their collective voices to take action!

The brainchild of Senator Gaylord Nelson, he used the student infused power of the anti-war movement in 1969 and coupled it with environmental concerns of the public to shed light, and force the issue onto the political agenda, which until then was not taking head.

It was announced that in spring of 1970 there would be a massive demonstration around the nation on behalf of the environment, inviting all to participate. This opened the floodgates to public outcry with a flood of questions and comments about environment being voiced directly to the Senate office in D.C.

Senator Gaylord says, “Earth Day worked because of the spontaneous response at the grassroots level. We had neither the time nor resources to organize 20 million demonstrators and the thousands of schools and local communities that participated. That was the remarkable thing about Earth Day. It organized itself.”

Props to President Kennedy and Attorney General Robert Kennedy for the 5 day 11 city “Conservation Tour” and for seeing the relevance of this tremendously important issue back then. This is the seed that eventually flowered into Earth Day on every April 22.

http://earthday.envirolink.org/history.html

Lets bless our Mother Earth, and give back to the hand that feeds us!

Here is some things you can do:

1. Don’t drive at all today, use public transpo or carpool more often

2. Turn off your facet (when brushing teeth, washing face, etc)

3. Recycle (only 25% of Americans recycle)

4. Don’t throw away old batteries, buy rechargeable ones if possible, and take old batteries to recycling center

5. Turn down your water heater and your furnace

6. Air dry your clothes

7. Don’t let your car idle, turn the engine off.

8. Don’t buy styrofoam.

9. Buy recyclable items

10. Plant a tree, or a bunch of them, then breath!

Creative Memory

LL members are some of the most cutting edge, fresh wizards out there right now using their creative minds to establish new female frontiers in business and commUnity. Here is some good salad for our brains to keep them in top shape!

Creative Memory

If we didn’t have memories, then how could we use them as a platform to come up with new solutions to problem solving and new creations? But how do we remember things? And why are some memories much clearer and others fuzzy? The answer lies in our conscious state, especially at the time of the experience. In order to retain, we must fully “live in the moment”, to be present, to retain. When we choose to recall a memory or an experience, we are simply allowing ourselves to return to the original experience, and it comes back completely “refreshed”.

So it isn’t really about retaining, it’s about retrieving. All of these experiences are lying dormant in our subconscious, waiting to be reactivated. When it comes to our brains, there is still a lot of mystery. Many scientists are coming to understand that its not just about localized areas of the brain that store memories, and that consciousness is not a function of the brain, but more of something that is processed through the brain, that exists beyond the material world. Again giving more to the argument that we are beyonders, spiritual beings that transcend our earthly residence. Our brains, function more like computers, hardware, that process consciousness that manifests as mind. Going further into esoteric reaches, our mind can exist in non-local areas of the body, and memory can be electrochemical as well as etheric, surrounding the human body and brain! Dr.’s Karl Pribram, Karl Lashley, Paul Pietsch, and Rupert Sheldrake all contributed to these findings.

This gives us the special ability called ‘collective consciousness’ that Carl Jung introduced us to, that all humans can contribute to as well as access, giving us superpowers in global, even universal problem-solving and healing.

We do not need to suffer from brainpower depleting diseases such as Alzheimers and dementia. Our food and exercise choices and stress all directly contribute to this, as does our level of brain exercise. Wake up folks, our brain is a muscle! If you don’t use it, you will loose it. But do not fear, we can restore it, via natural means of course like Kundalini Yoga, and the ‘breath of fire’ to electronically stimulate the brain for lasting effects. Dr. Dharma Singh Khalsa, renowned brain guru, respected by both the medical and naturopathic fields has worked with Alzheimer’s patients. Peep out this great site for tips, and exercises for your brain, and share it will everyone you love!

Fast for Life!

Photo via Julie 911

Yes its that time of year, spring has sprung, and things are beginning to sprout anew.

As in nature, we must also sprout anew. Humans do spring cleaning on their homes, switch their closets up; maybe even get a fetching new cut to refresh the winter doldrums.

But what about our internal cleanse? Beyond the surface.

Our small intestine is 20 feet long and carries what’s left of the food we eat, once the nutrients are absorbed out of it. Meat, and other food substances that are hard to digest, often linger longer in the small intestine, petrifying. Think of your small intestine like an old closet you throw things in that you don’t want to deal with, that eventually starts to have a funny odor.

Our bodies have extra storage compartments that harbor old stuff that is not eliminated or used efficiently, and these are called lymph nodes. Kind of nasty stuff I think we can agree to do with out! So, what is the proper way in which to thoroughly clean our internal house out?

Our ancient relatives used a fairly simple method in which to keep clean, and to rid the body of waste and/or prevent disease with. It was called, “Nature's operating table”, and it is called fasting. Some fear the word, or think it unhealthy to do. Well think again, but not with your stomach this time! We do fear the unknown, or anything that threatens our regular way of life or thought, or even a challenge. We think we will die without food, or at least end up a heap on the office floor. I can assure you neither will happen. What I can also assure you will happen, if you fast for 10 days, is that you will:

  • Have more energy (since you are not expending energy digesting food)
  • Need less sleep (since you are not expending energy digesting food, your mind is clearer and more awake than usual)
  • You will breath freer and easier (since mucus is ridding your body)
  • You will think clear and more esoterically than ever before (why do you think gurus fast?)
  • You will loose on average 10-12 pounds if overweight and only a few pounds if at your ideal weight
  • Feel more loving and tolerant of others and challenging circumstances (i.e. stress)
  • Save a lot of money on food

It does take a little advanced preparation daily, as to get the full effect of the cleanse it is recommended to take a natural laxative tea in the evening, and also a saltwater tonic (sea salt and warm water) drink in the am. Both of these methods combined will make you eliminate (crap) a lot in the morning, so give yourself an hour and 45 minutes before you have to go anywhere. Use that time to make your daily 6-10 glasses of lemonade drink (fresh lemon, grade B maple syrup, spring water with a pinch of cayenne) and fill up your bottles to take with you for your day ahead. I don’t recommend taking off work or forgoing your regular activities. The first 3 days are a little intense, as the cravings play with your mind, make you think you're hungry. But after that the "hungry" feeling dissipates you'll feel rather tranquil. Not having to eat gives you a lot more time! You can exercise and do what you like socially. Even though you don’t have the same kind of “amped up” energy we get from energy drinks, if you do exercise you will be amazed that you don’t get tired, but have a good steady stream of sustainable energy. I usually feel more like yoga, hikes, walks, mellow actives, but I have had to perform and train at times during fasts and get through it just fine. So don’t over plan. You dictate your life, not food.

You will have a glow about you, and a little smile on your face, so why not share it with the world? After 10 days of fasting, on your 11th day, when you come off of it, treat your body as a temple and ease back into it, by drinking fresh squeezed OJ. It will taste like liquid sun.

On the 12th day, eat soup and salad, and then on your 13th day do the same or add a few things (not dairy yet or meat). You will look and feel like a million bucks. And the lessons you will have learned along the way will be life changing. Such as how we view food. Do we eat to live, or live to eat? Why people who proactively take care of their bodies are a minority and so much more.

Pick up the guide by the master himself, Stanley Burroughs, called “The Master Cleanse” that has the lemonade recipe and all the info you will need. It’s only needed once a year, you can do it!

I'm totally feeling Kelis' new single Acapella. The heavy bass meshes well with Kelis' raspy yet lithe voice. As usual, Ms. K delights us with her use of imagery.

Oddly enough it reminds me of a bit of Avatar, I Dream of Jeannie and The Man Who Fell to Earth with a hint of Sade.

Student Loan Overhaul

How many of you out there have student loans? I'm sure there are several who do. A little info for you who currently have loans, are thinking about taking on loans and/or will have future children who will attend university -
Since the bank-based loan program began in 1965, commercial banks like Sallie Mae and Nelnet have received guaranteed federal subsidies to lend money to students, with the government assuming nearly all the risk. Democrats have long denounced the program, saying it fattened the bottom line for banks at the expense of students and taxpayers.
Ending one of the fiercest lobbying fights in Washington, Congress voted 2 weeks ago to force commercial banks out of the federal student loan market, cutting off billions of dollars in profits in a sweeping restructuring of financial-aid programs and redirecting most of the money to new education initiatives.

Pregnant on the Frontline

Journalist Elizabeth Rubin (pictured above) went to the Afghanistan's frontline to cover war - 4 months pregnant. She recently wrote about her experience -
"I never thought I'd write a personal story about being a war correspondent. It seemed so beside the point, so much less important than the story I was reporting. Some of my closest friends are photographers and writers who've worked in war zones, and whenever we'd get questions like "What's it like to be a woman and work in Afghanistan or Iraq?" we'd roll our eyes. It was an attitude, for sure, but one we were proud of...

How could a woman, particularly in the military, not understand why I would have kept my pregnancy to myself? Is it true that the toughest adversary for women is still other women? I may be extracting too much out of a simple anecdote, but it was enough to make me want to tell the story. One reason was visceral: I wanted to get even with her. The other is more complicated."

This is Rox...

This lady is destined for success this year. Rox is an amazing talent from the UK. Her powerful vocals are reminiscent of the soulful Lauryn Hill and Amy Winehouse. Rox owns the stage when she is on it and her vocals on record are just as flawless.

Her debut single 'My Baby Left Me' is out now. The single has been
described as a breath of fresh air, as are the songs on the album which are fun and uplifting with a story or two to tell! This is definitely one to look out for.

Long Island City, NY – The Space (Fardom Gallery) is pleased to present a female group show exploring the human consciousness that exists in-between our sleep and wake states of mind. Bedtime Stories, Monotone Dreams curated by Helen Homan Wu, opens on April 9th and runs through May 2nd, 2010. Bedtime Stories will present works in various media by six contemporary female artists, both national and international, ranging from Kelly Sturhahn’s mirrors and reflections to Aliona Yurtsevich’s intricate sound compositions. We all have at one time or another, been paralyzed during our sleep. Modern science calls it Sleep Paralysis and eliminates any possibility of it being linked to a different realm. In truth, the reality of each experience is relative and unique to the sleeper. This in-between state of consciousness is a phenomenal experience that calls for attention. For an artist, it is an inspirational moment of truth that for an average folk often it gets ignored.

Katja Loher, born in Basel, Switzerland, now based in Brooklyn, NY, will draw the viewer into her medley of universes from videos projections in sculptural objects. Carissa Pelleteri’s nostalgic stills taken from super 8 footage, feel almost as if you have been pulled into someone’s lost memory. Working with the media of traditional lines, Sol Kjøk explores the human form in every possible angle, embedded with it are deep questions about existentialism. Kelly Sturhahn tells her story in a set/stage-like manner with deliciously dark installations that has romantic notions at first glance, but on close inspection reflects another dimension. Chaw Ei Thien’s site-specific piece the bed is not to be missed. Her choice of materials directly reflects the moment in flux, something so beautiful that can decay into ugliness within a blink of an eye. Inspired by technology, data bits, and nature, Aliona Yurtsevich will present an abstract composition that evokes sounds of the soul, dreams, lost memories, desires, fear, hope, movement, and emotional stillness.
