Megan Geckler's Woven Colors

Los Angeles artist Megan Wexler's vision is extraordinary. 

Geckler uses only strips of translucent plastic tape in her installations, positioning them and weaving them together to create surface patterns and curvilinear forms. In this case, she has lined several walls and wrapped several of the center's iconic columns in tape stripes and designed a loosely woven form that hovers like a canopy above the center's lower lobby and café area. Geckler is based in Los Angeles, and her work has been exhibited at the Santa Monica Museum of Art, the Torrance Art Museum, Women & Their Work in Austin, Texas, and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

Primeval Love at LA's Museum Of Natural History

I grew up taking field trips to the Museum of Natural History on Exposition in LA. Years later I went to undergrad across the street at USC. This Friday April 9th from 7-11pm those worlds collide at Primeval Love, a one-night exhibition featuring the artwork of Amanda Visell (HEART BIG TIME).

The show is FREE and will be held on the main floor with 35 pieces on display including one "ginormous" piece. The Petrojvic Blasting Company will playing as well.

The Museum of Natural History Los Angeles is located at 900 Exposition Blvd, LA, CA 90007.

Margaret Harrison for Intersection For The Arts

Work done by the controversial artist Margaret Harrison displayed at the Intersection for the Arts. With this art work hanging, "The Bodies are Back" is definitely an attention grabber. On first sight this art work displays as just any other art work displayed, it wasn't until my second look that i realized that it was captain America with the body of wonder woman. Margaret Harrison, who is pioneer of the feminist art, has been seen as controversial even from the beginning when she was shut down in the 70's by London police on the second day of her solo exhibit opening. She is now re-displaying her work at the Intersection For The Arts Feb 10 - March 27. Check out some crazy cool art work, and take some pics for me.

The Solo Mujeres Exhibition at Mission Cultural Center opens on March 2nd, running through March 27th (right in time for Women's History Month).

“Two Four looks at four decades of Latina culture through collected photographs and ephemera from the archive of life long 24th Street/Mission resident Sandy Cuadra as well as through preserved archival footage of the neighborhood from the 70s and 80s collected by Veronica Majano and the Mission Film Archive”. - Clare Haggarty (curator)

“Two-Four Home Girls, Circa 1980”

The Tiny Locas, "You and I" dances, and the Low-rider cars represented rites of passage and the social scene for teenage girls in the early 1980's in the 24th Street Mission neighborhood. The exhibition features photographs by Sandy Cuadra- a former Tiny Loca who has lived in the Mission for over 30 years- memories of dancing, cars, parties in the park, and tight friendships. In addition, footage from the Mission Film Archive (thanks to filmmaker Vero Majano) further activates the world of Low-riders and the "You and I" dances. Vintage posters to promote those dances, made by Mitchell Salazar, also hang in the gallery, and complete this nostalgic look into a particular period in the Mission that speaks to the former teenager in all of us.

Roma Women Art Project

Being Hungarian & having spent a quite a lot of time on the continent of Europe, the "Gypsies" or Roma peoples are quite familiar to me. But-oh-so intriguing. I've watched them as many outsiders do of others - coming from church, walking with their families and begging on the street with babes & dogs in arms. Yet I'd never engaged them beyond a coin dropped here and there. Mainly because I was never fully fluent in their mother tongues but I had been warned not to go beyond the peripheral.

Not very much out there exists in the public realm about the history and present existence of Romanish peoples. Point being, these people are commonly stereotyped, fear & shunned. That's why SHUKAR seems cool - asking people to rethink the way they view gypsies. Bet you'll never use the term "gyped" again.

SHUKAR opening reception on February 11th from 6PM-8PM.

The Roma (Gypsies) are Hungary’s largest ethnic minority counting more than one million people. Until the second half of the 20th century, the representation of Gypsy art was the exclusive monopoly of non-Roma, defined usually as “folk art” or “naïve art.” SHUKAR! presents a contemporary Roma art that is hardly naïve. Rather, it is critical, political, and above all, painterly. The works in SHUKAR! reflect upon the social role of women and their double-minority position in the Hungarian Roma community. Theses paintings are at once provocative and beautiful, asking viewers to reconsider the role of Roma women and Roma contemporary art.

UK Hip Hoppin'

'Home grown' is an amazing exhibition taking place in the uk at the famous Urbis Gallery.

The show takes a look at the last three decades, almost like a back catolouge.It gives an insight of how hip hops infectious beats and rhythms...it's culture, has traveled all the way from the streets of the Bronx to the UK. The British have taken elements of it's original form and have created their own style.

The exhibition is a celebration of hip hop and it's British artists, it features the likes of Klashnekoff, Skinny man, Dizzy Rascal, and photographers Jake green, Michael Antonion, David Hawdon and many more.

You can also expect to see un seen video footage, photography, Graffiti art and original hip hop memorabilia.

This is the first Hip-Hop exhibition of it's kind, that documents the rise and impact of Hip-Hop in the Uk.

The exhibition runs until March 2010

Art Exhibition: Feminine Topography

Sofia Vilarinho and Raquel Nicoletti along with a small crew have created a super interesting art installation called Feminine Topography. Aimed at bringing attention to the physicality and importance of women's bodies, beyond the usual glamorization. The works include jewelry made from paper maché, artificial skin, and human hair. Glancing at the Twin Peak

Tonight the Joshua Liner Gallery is pleased to present the opening for Tomokazu Matsuyama's
Glancing at the Twin Peak.

With Glancing at the Twin Peak, the artist makes reference to two titans of Japanese and American culture, respectively—Sanraku Kano and Frederic Remington. A master of the influential Kano school of painting in the late sixteenth century, Kano depicted riders on horseback in iconic images of masculinity that typified the era. Likewise, Remington, celebrated for his hypermasculine paintings of “cowboys and Indians,” spoke for a young nation coming of age at the end of the nineteenth century. Via Joshua Liner Gallery
