She's A LLady: Mitra Khayyam

You've been down with Ladies Lotto for a while. What appealed to you about LL and what kind of experience has it been for you?

I liked the idea of being able to network with my peers, ones who share the same interests, and comparable experiences in the industry. It's been wonderful, I've collaborated with several of the LLadies, and they always continue to inspire me!

Where did you come up with the name Blood is the New Black?

Blood has always symbolized familiar bonds for me. In that respect, the name is a play on the fashion industry and "such and such being the new black" that season. I felt as though our community of artists should set the trends, not the fashion industry.

What's your background and how did you get started in the fashion industry?

My background is in Design Management and Marketing. I applied for an internship at Chloe when I was 18, my 2nd week in NY, and it went form there. Since then I've worked with a range of designers and artists in many capacities.

As someone who may not have had the artistic skill to create, how did you carve a niche for yourself in the industry and where did the idea for Blood is the New Black come from?

The idea came from the thesis I had written in college the year before the business started. I carved a niche for us by not art directing the line. I did not and do not want to be a trend driven graphic t-shirt line. This has given our images longevity and made the line more original than others out there.

How would you describe Blood is the New Black's aesthetic and what message are you trying to convey with your line of T-shirts and the artists you choose to promote?

The line is not a sounding board for my ideas or opinions. As far an aesthetic, I think we are somewhat tongue in cheek about a lot of what we do, whether it's an inside joke, or an irreverent image. The most important thing we are trying to accomplish is to make art accessible in some way shape or form to everyone.

To build on that, do you get in on the creative process in terms of ideas or do you leave that designers and artists you work with?

I leave it up to them. I'm not an art director or a creative director. I trust their skill, and that is why they are part of our collection. With that said, if they need help with color pairings etc, I'm always there.

Your designs have been worn by American Idol alum Adam Lambert, the Gossip's Beth Ditto, and Lil' Wayne, and that's a pretty wide range of known figures. Did you think that you would reach that level of success so soon?

Soon? I've been doing this for 5 years, at times working 7 days a week, 12 hours a day, so it's been a lot of blood, sweat, and tears behind the tees. I think it's great though! It's still very surreal to me to see the tees on celebrities! It's even fun to see them on people around town.

There are so many up and coming designers, artists and photographers. How do you decide who you want to work with?

There's no formula to it. I try to work with artists who's work doesn't resemble other artists that we're working with. We want to keep the line fresh and on the same token, I guess we have something for everybody considering we're working with close to 30 artists. Overall, if an artist has a good attitude and is fun to work with, it always makes the job much more enjoyable.

According to your bio, you were once told that you'd "never work in this town again". How did you manage to overcome that?

Hahahaha. Very easily, I just looked at the source.

You recently celebrated BITNB's 5th anniversary on November 7th with a reception and gallery show that is running until December 11th. What can visitors expect to experience?

Wow! It's just a awesome grouping of our artists. From every end of the art world, ranging from Skye Parrott from Dossier, to tattoo artist Jeff P, illustrator Hannah Stouffer, and more. It's a beautiful and inspiring show.

What's next up for BITNB and what direction do you see yourself moving in?

Wow! So much stuff! We're working on the 2nd edition of our 'zine, which is limited to 3000 newsprint issues, which won't be on the web. We're launching our new site within the next few weeks, we're now selling art, 'zines, Baggu's, and BITNB wallets too! It's all so exciting and makes us happy to go to work in the morning!

Photography Lomography

Tonight the Lomography company is opening a new gallery and store in the Big Apple. The party will include a live performance by A Hawk and A Hacksaw, plus food and drink and other Lomographic goodies.

The Lomography Gallery Store features the largest LomoWall in North America; made o of 35,000 hand-picked lomographs.

In addition, the store will offer events, parties, and exhibitions, including a stop by the Diana World Tour in November 2009 where hundreds of classic Diana cameras from the 60s & 70s will be on display. Their photo technique is inspired by the "charmed unique, colorful, and sometimes blurry" images that the camera produced.

Lomography emphasizes casual, snapshot photography. Characteristics such as over-saturated colors, blurring, and alternative film processing are often considered part of the "Lomographic technique."

Heist Gallery is proud to present REVERB.

REVERB is an exhibition about the persistence of an experience that reminds us how unmistakably alive we are. Like the absorption of sound by surrounding walls that trap the echo of its source, these photographs capture the result of experience so vivid and real that it becomes an infinite reverb. Reverb amplifies the raw spirit of a good punk song, defining its essential point, turning noise into a justification of its effect. The photographers presented in this exhibition achieve exactly this effect in their depicted images, capturing life as they live it in the impending now that has no before and whose after doesn't matter.

Davi Russo.s work is based on personal experience and the tumultuous turns life throws him. He captures the highs and the lows of this adventure in a fragile, fragmented vision of his reality. Tod Seelie has traveled the U.S. and the world with groups of friends whose creative energy and relentless spirit of adventure drive his raw and powerful images. Both artists stop at nothing to imbibe the energy life gives them, presenting honest and poignant images of moments that resonate in our visual memory.

Complementing their work are music videos by Matthew Bradley. His clever interpretations of songs reflect the immediacy and inspiration that music provides not only for the artist but for every viewer. Music highlights our reality, reminding us about the essential in every moment, capturing the essence of experience and creating reverb, one beat at a time.

REVERB will be on view from September 12 to October 5, 2008.

B8 Global Justice for Burma is an international affair taking place in Delhi, London, New York and San Francisco on August 8, 2008. B8 hopes to bring attention to the brutal regime of General Than Shwe and to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the 8888 massacre. In 1987, the country was thrown into economic turmoil when General Ne Win decided to change the currency based on his astrologer's assertion that "9" was his lucky number. The number was not so lucky for Burmese citizens; many suffered because of this abrupt change in the economic flow. On August 8, 1988 thousands of peaceful protesters including students and monks were slaughtered on the streets of Burma (now Myanmar) as they called for a more stable economy.

alldaybuffet is co-sponsoring an event to bring people -- including the Prime Minister of a government in exile -- together in the spirit of the Olympics, under one banner, to stop the atrocities in Burma. The B8 events will kick off the larger Global Justice for Burma campaign to end impunity for war crimes, torture, and genocide in Burma by calling for the referral of Burma's General Than Shwe and his military regime to the International Criminal Court.

Events will be held in various spaces throughout the world; many will have monks on hand to discuss the situation in Burma.The only requirement is that you wear a bit of scarlet to show your solidarity.

With sophisticated new handling of traditional mediums, the artists Claude Bernon, Sr Labo, and Melissa Steckbauer provide discourse on the contemporary issue of hybridization. Sr Labo's psychological work uses wax to represent the melding of animal and human bodies, Claude Bernon wanders through the forests of France in search of creatures from Russian fairy tales, and Melissa Steckbauer paints characters seeking identity, sexual freedom, and the fulfillment of their sexual fantasies. Michelle Dunn Marsh is an advocate for photography and design. She has worked with the Aperture Foundation since 1996, and presently serves as deputy director of the Foundation and as co-publisher for Aperture magazine. For the last five years she has been responsible for Aperture West, a regional outreach program, and the Foundation's presence in the west continues to be an area of focus. Her current responsibilities include working with the senior team at Aperture to provide strategic leadership for all mission-driven programs of the organization.

LLNY's meeting on 11/14

LLNY's November meeting took place at Ladies Lotto member, Christina Ray's GLOWLAB. The meeting was catered by Kila Lamadora & her partner Mariyam Nayeri. Drinks by Vitamin & Smart Waters, Amstel Light and the lovely folks at ZYGO Vodka (so good with guarana which makes you go zoooomm!).

We heard from speakers from the Williamsburg Gallery Association, Pocket Utopia, Like the Spice Gallery, AM RIchard FIne Art, Front Room Gallery and Glowlab.

We raffled off goodies including bikini & eyebrow waxes, facials and massages as well as a big bottle of Zygo Vodka to new member Zhanna Vetts. Special thanks to KING ABDO for helping with the raffle - he's our honorary community kiddo.
