The latest work by New York-based photographer Ruvan Wijesooriya is on display in the exhibit "Dearest Of Dearest" at New York gallery ION Studio located in SoHo.
Wijesooriya's work span from all different genres and he has captured stars such as Mark Ronson, Iggy Pop, LCD Soundsystem, Ice-T, Ellen Page and more.
This time around he celebrates his beloved friends, family and associates and promises a sincere photo show of funny faces, kisses, smiles and love.

Things And Time

This Friday, a special evening of music, food, dancing, and fundraising in celebration of Madeleine Hunt- Ehrlich’s photography exhibition, Caribbean in America: Things and Time displaying the photography taken while artist spent time in Little Haiti in Miami, Florida, just a short time before the devastating earth quake.

A series of related works will be on display, curated by Legacy Russell ( Bruce High Quality Foundation), the infamous DJ Deadly Dragon Sound System will spin classic Reggae and Dancehall. All profits will be donated to the Lambi Fund of Haiti, a Haitian-American non- profit working to rebuild the city of Port Au Prince. Event is free and open to the public.

NYC - Black for Rouge 58: Brother From Another Mother

You know that old adage - "behind every good man is an even better woman. " Well, in this case, it's great women with great men supporting us. When it comes to a community of creative women, there are certainly male friends and family who have helped support in many, many ways.

One of those guys happens to be my brother from another mother photographer Kareem Black. Kareem has a new photo exhibition in Brooklyn next week at Rouge 58.

"Inspired by Guy Bourdin, his most favored photographer, Kareem collaborated with acclaimed stylist Harold Melvin to creatively direct seven images reminiscent of one of the greatest advertising photographers of our time. Exclusively shot for Rouge 58 to coincide with New York Fashion Week, it echoes Bourdin’s legendary Exhibit A series, Kareem has aptly titled his series as Exhibit B, both as an homage to the photographer and a reference this own last name.

Coming from an industry obsessed with the face and eyes as the anchor of beauty and often a tool for celebrity, Kareem draws on Bourdin’s style; dark humor, awkward playfulness and even violent sexiness."

HerStory: In Focus - Ellen Von Unwerth & Cindy Sherman

"Women are not just there to be admired, they are there to be enjoyed." - Ellen Von Unwerth

Ellen Von Unwerth, photographer and director extraordinaire was born in 1954, in Frankfurt, Germany. She masters imagery of erotic femininity. Von Unwerth worked as a fashion model for ten years herself before moving behind the camera and is now one of the worlds most in demand fashion photographers.

Remember those playful and sexy Guess? Jeans Ads featuring supermodel Claudia Schiffer in the 1990’s? Ellen Von Unwerth found fame when she photographed these ads.

She has been published in top magazines such as, Vogue, Vanity Fair, Interview, The Face, Arena and I-D. Von Unwerth has also directed short films for fashion designers, and music videos for several pop musicians including Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Rihanna.

Her advertising campaigns include Victoria's Secret, Banana Republic, Guess, Diesel, and Chanel. She won first prize at the International Festival of Fashion Photography in 1991. Her published books include Snaps, Wicked, Couples and most recent Fräulein, which was released in December 2009. Her photography is gorgeous, unique and truly celebrates personality and sexuality of women.

Art and Commerce represent her for photography and Moo Studios for live action.

New York Native Cindy Sherman (born January 19, 1954) is a photographer best known for her conceptual portraits. Sherman works in series, typically photographing herself in a range of costumes. In her landmark 69 photograph series, Untitled Film Stills, (1977–1980) are black and white photos in which Sherman places herself as an unnamed actress in shots reminiscent of foreign films, Hollywood pictures, B-movies, and film noir. Sherman used her own possessions as props, or sometimes borrowed from friends and the shots were also mainly taken in her own apartment.

In 2006, Sherman created a series of fashion advertisements for designer Marc Jacobs. The advertisements themselves were photographed by photographer Juergen Teller and released as a monograph by Rizzoli. Sherman has also worked as a film director; her first film was Office Killer in 1997, starring Jeanne Tripplehorn, Molly Ringwald and Carol Kane. She played a cameo role in John Waters' film, Pecker.

Although Sherman does not consider her work feminist, many of her photo-series, like the 1981 "Centerfolds," call attention to the stereotyping of women in films, television and magazines. When talking about one of her centerfold pictures Cindy said, "In content I wanted a man opening up the magazine suddenly to look at it with an expectation of something lascivious and then feel like the violator that they would be. Looking at this woman who is perhaps a victim. I didn't think of them as victims at the time... But I suppose... Obviously I'm trying to make someone feel bad for having a certain expectation."

Sherman is represented by Sprüth Magers Berlin London in Europe and Metro Pictures gallery in New York.

The Tiny Locas, "You and I" dances, and the Low-rider cars represented rites of passage and the social scene for teenage girls in the early 1980's in the 24th Street Mission neighborhood. The exhibition features photographs by Sandy Cuadra- a former Tiny Loca who has lived in the Mission for over 30 years- memories of dancing, cars, parties in the park, and tight friendships. In addition, footage from the Mission Film Archive (thanks to filmmaker Vero Majano) further activates the world of Low-riders and the "You and I" dances. Vintage posters to promote those dances, made by Mitchell Salazar, also hang in the gallery, and complete this nostalgic look into a particular period in the Mission that speaks to the former teenager in all of us.
