Damn Good Pizza!

Being a Native New Yorker and raised on the authentic makings of a pizza, I know what the aroma of a pizza pie is. Even though New York has some of the best pizzas you can’t just get it anywhere.

Don’t think you can go to the Meat Packing District because their pizza has such a hard crust that you might as well be eating cardboard. You can go Uptown and get some great pizza, however it's so greasy there's no need to order a drink. We all know the saying, the best pizza comes from Brooklyn, well I am still waiting for someone to prove it to me.

Now there is one place where you can NOT go wrong - Downtown - to L’asso.

From the space, to the music to the food…the food. There's pizza, pasta, bruschette, zuppe, antipasta, paste, and insalatas. I ended up with the whole wheat pasta with chicken; the pizza pie known as Alla Roba which had mozzarella, gorgonzola, and pears; and the insanely good Mascarpone Tartufata with the mascarpone, portobello mushrooms, gorgonzola, and truffle oil. So so soooo good. Plus the wait staff is amazing (& very easy on the eyes).

Best part about L'asso is that they have been supporting Ladies Lotto since it's inception, holding numerous dinners, sponsoring events such as 31 Under 31 and Planned Parenthood Benefit and just all around providing LLadies with a little something extra or a few bucks off when you dine in.

Check them out for yourself.

Warm Ice Cream?

Ben & Jerry’s ice cream is pondering how to make an ice cream that is made, shipped and sold warm, with the consumer taking the final step of actually freezing the product.

The goal would be to reduce energy and emissions spent on keeping ice cream cold throughout the supply chain, reports TimesOnline.

The company has its scientists, along with researchers from Cambridge University, hard at work on a solution. So far, the optimal formula is not in sight, however. The company already has taken steps to improve energy efficiency at ice cream processing plants in the UK, Germany, Italy and France.

In addition, it is upgrading 2 million refrigerated and frozen cases that it supplies to retailers who sell Unilever products. For instance, about 400,000 of the units are now powered by propane, consuming 15 percent less energy.

Is Organic Food Really Better For You?

Lately I have been hearing a lot of
news reports claiming that organic produce isn't actually any better for you than its pesticide-laden counterparts.
But not only are there benefits for you, there are benefits for the environment which we shouldn't forget about.

Ella Nemcova (aka
The Regal Vegan) summed it up very nicely for us in her weekly newsletter. Here's a summary:

Top 10 Benefits of Eating Organic

  1. Waterways aren't contaminated by chemical run-off from farms.
  2. Pesticide-related health risks to farm workers (and anyone living in the area) are eliminated.
  3. You will dramatically reduce the amount of pesticide residue you ingest on a daily basis. Pesticides ingested by pregnant women may be linked to birth defects and health issues.
  4. Biodiversity is increased with the use of buffer crops, and by avoiding killing or harming insects and other wildlife that is not a threat to crops.
  5. Pesticides are responsible for a staggering amount of greenhouse gas emissions.
  6. You can avoid eating any genetically modified foods.
  7. Reduced reliance on chemical and agri-engineering corporations is good for farmers.
  8. Organic farming is healthier for the soil.
  9. Organic dairy cows are not injected with milk-boosting hormones such as recombinant bovine somatotrophin (rBST)—which may increase insulin levels in humans.
  10. Organics taste better. It's just my humble opinion, but I've noticed a difference in the taste of strawberries, peaches, grapes and leafy greens, so if you're still skeptical, I dare you to put your faith in conventionally grown foods to the test.

Foods From Far Away

Far Foods is an alternative packaging concept for supermarket produce, highlighting the distances that some foods travel from and the resultant carbon dioxide released during the journey. The receipt features a boarding card style tear-off strip.

James Reynold's alternative packaging concept for supermarket produce is definitely a mind tickler. The London-based graphic designer, whose "Far Foods" idea was featured today on swissmiss, suggests grocers take the guesswork out of food-mile calculations with labels that place that information front and center.

Unfortunately this isn't real yet, but hopefully one day it will be.

The benefits of cactus (plural is cacti) are far and wide. Cactus, also known as nopales or nopalitos,

The Biggest Farmer's Market in France

The French are certainly known for their cuisine, but cooking isn't the only aspect for them to be proud of. This week is the Salon International de l'Agriculture, an annual event with over 1,000 exhibitors from over 17 countries and 22 french regions. The Salon aims to celebrate the agricultural diversity of France and the world as well as educate about sustainable farming methods.

This is a big deal. Not only does it take place in Paris (can you imagine having a bunch of pigs and horses and tomato plants take over Chelsea Piers?), but the Salon is the place to be this week with even Sarkozy making an appearance.

The diverse exhibit allows you to meet cows and their owners, learn about their living situations, and taste some of the cows' cheese. You can also explore the crops of France by sampling crêpes (ostensibly to learn about grains) and test your nose as you attempt to differentiate between different wine grapes.

Round out your visit by trying food products from all of France's regions (there is a lot of wine and cheese to taste) as well as the overseas domains and territories. There is plenty to taste and plenty to buy but you can practically make a meal with the samples, making the Salon a good place to load up before Fashion Week when there is no time to eat anyway.

Le Salon International de l'Agriculture
Through March 1st, 12€
9am - 7pm (until 11pm tonight)
Porte de Versailles

Squash It

Kabocha Squash, or the Japanese Pumpkin, is tender, creamy, fragrant, and sweet. Not pretty to look at with a dull green bumpy skin, it more than makes up for it in flavor! It tastes sweet potato and is one of the most flavorful of the hard squash.

This thing is loaded with beta carotene along with vitamin C, iron and potassium as well as folic acid (good for your pum pum), calcium, and trace B vitamins.

You can make it with ease - warm up the oven to 350 degrees, cut the squash in half, empty the seeds, place in a lightly oiled oven dish with lid and bake for approx 30-40 minutes. Voila! You've got an incredible delicacy ready to eat.

There are other ways to make it. Here are some more recipes to explore:

Have some gourmet food this weekend! And discover great bands while eating...

This weekend is the premier of a new music festival: East Village Radio Festival.

As in the East Village Radio spirit there will be lots of great music to discover, lots of fun and lots of food. The event will take place from 1 - 9 p.m. on Saturday, September 6, and features a lineup that includes Flying Lotus, Boris, Mark Ronson, Vivian Girls, Devin the Dude, Hypnotic Brass ensemble and more. The festival has two stages and KRS-One playing host to the day activities.

Additionally, a visual art exhibition will feature films by Harry Smith and Jim Davis, avant-garde works about New York City, and classic pieces from organization Anthology Film Archives.
Free shuttle bus service will be provided from the station at 1st avenue to the Seaport where the festivities take place.

So what about the food?

Well East Village Radio offers some gourmet food to the music lovers at South Seaport. And this is not hot dogs or corn on the cob, common festival food. For this festival an exclusive gourmet menu has been planned, courtesy of Frank Catering, with bruschetta, Ceasar salad, salmon, and Italian sausage, amongst other delicious dishes.

Hope to see you there!

Peanut Butter Chocolate Crunch Squares

Uhhh...Yum!

So one day I was thinking about desserts for a Ladies Lotto meeting and all I could think about was watermelon smoothies and cucumber-mint slushies. I would have ended up bringing melted messes that could have been used for a mixer. but would hardly do for a dessert. In the summer, the number one kitchen rule for me is that the oven stays off, not exactly a cookie friendly environment. Since you all enjoyed the almond cherry blobs we had in May, I decided to research more quick and easy desserts. Although this is not a raw dessert and the blobs (I need a new name for those) were, it's still vegan. Just so you know I tested out on a few people to make sure they were good. I don't have much of a sweet tooth so almost anything is dessert if its the slightest bit sweet.

Anyway, glad you liked them and now you can make your own.
I followed a precise recipe once and they were ridiculously sweet, so I modified

1 cup creamy peanut butter (you could substitute almond butter as well)
1/2 cup maple syrup or 1/3 Agave
1/4 cup of shredded raw coconut (not toasted)
a pinch of sea salt
1-2 cups of cornflakes
1-2 cups of rice puffs (not rice krispies)
I put 1-2 cups because if you use Agave you have less liquid so you may want less crunch
1 cup of semi-sweet chocolate

Directions:
In a sauce pan on medium to low heat add peanut butter, sweetener, salt and coconut stirring as you add. Be careful not to leave it too long or the peanut butter will burn.

In a large mixing bowl, add cornflakes. Put on some latex-free gloves and squeeze the flakes into smaller pieces. Add rice puffs. Mix together.

Add you peanut butter mixture and use a spatula to mix in leaving no dry mix untouched. Once it has cooled a little, put your gloved hands in the bowl and really mix it up.

Depending on how thick you want your squares, choose a cooling dish. I used a cookie sheet so the were super thin. With your spatula spread a layer of the mix evenly across the sheet/dish. Refrigerate.

In a double boiler or a small pot of boiling water with a bowl resting on top (be sure the bowl isn't touching the water or your chocolate will burn) add your chocolate to the dry bowl.
It should melt in about 5 mins. Once its melted, grab your cookie sheet and spread the chocolate around and then the sheet back in the refrigerator.

after a 1/2 hr you should be able to cut and eat!

Cointreau Pearls - A Lil Fishy?

Let's talk about this... WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE??? Does this look appetizing to you? Actually, I find it rather appealing considering the texture of tapioca makes me squeal with delight. However, it looks a little of caviar? Someone please tell me what's going on here.

Ok. So I FINALLY FIGURED IT OUT. It IS caviar and not tapioca. PASS. Et toi?

Get Your Veg On! July's Zukes Spread

Since so many of the ladies enjoyed this at the July meeting and for those that didn't get the opportunity to try it, here's the recipe.

(makes 6-8 servings)
4 zucchini (green and yellow, with or without skin)
3-4 Garlic cloves
1/2 cup of lemon juice (or more to taste)
1 cup of sesame tahini
1 1/2 teaspoons sea salt (or to taste)
1/4 chopped parsley
pinch of paprika (or more)

Procedure: cube the zucchini, add to a food processor or blender, do not over chop, make sure there are chunks
add garlic (you may want to cut into smaller pieces)
mix the rest of the ingredients in a bowl and add to the zucchini/garlic mix and pulse until smooth.

Adding lemon slices, parsley and paprika on smooth surface for garnish is always pretty!
You can play with the quantities in terms of flavoring, but if you want to make 6-8 servings, I would stick to 4 zukes.
