Cheerleader Kicks Some A-S-S

Thanks to the efforts of 16-year-old cheerleader, Kealey Oliver, an alleged would-be thief was put in custody Sunday night. The high school junior tackled the suspect, slamming him to the ground, until mall security could catch up with them.

Oliver was on her cell phone, talking to her mother, when the man started running toward her. She acknowledged that she probably acted on instinct, using her cheerleading abilities to tackle the thief. - via HUFFINGTON POST

Modern Mamahood: Diaper Bag Essentials + Extras

Besides the obvious suspects (diapers, wipes, bottles, food), here are some items you may want to add to your most likely already too heavy and bulky diaper bag!

For the germ-cautious:
  • Hand Sanitizer - A staple these days! But check out this baby-safe, non-toxic version by BabyGanics.
  • Paci Protector - Where does the paci go when it's not in baby's mouth? Keep it clean(er) with this cute Pacifier Pocket from Skip Hop.
For the meal times:
  • Placemat - We love ours from Target. This disposable placemat with cute characters sticks to the table, great for babies who are into finger foods but are too young for their own plate.
  • Formula dispenser - For powder formula, use this dispenser to portion out bottles you can prepare on the go. Just add water! These can also double as snack-holders.
For the fussy times:
  • Teething tablets - I wish I'd started using these when she was younger...these homeopathic teeny teething tablets by Hyland's can be found everywhere and work wonders.
  • Baby Tylenol - Enough said! Since many stores still don't carry this brand after the big recall, use a generic for the same effect.
For the summer time:
  • Swim Diapers - These are usually required at public and private pools and work great. Don't forget to pack extras like you would regular diapers.
  • Sun Screen - Be prepared for any moment of fun in the sun by packing this skin staple for baby.

What is style?

What is style? With the latest fashion trends these days, we never seem to really know what is the latest look or just an over the top look. Looking at artists like Lady gaga who is the cross of Madonna and Grace Jones, or Nicki Minaj who seems to have multiple personality complex, we are looking around to figure out what is what. Let’s break it down for a second.

Style - “A distinctive manner of expression” is the definition found in Webster’s dictionary. In lamest terms, self expression. Dress for each occasion, dress for the day, and dress for the moment. Fashion has always been a large role in a women’s lifestyle. How she looks, and what she wears says everything without words. So when we look at the latest trends, what words are we portraying? Crazy? Over the top? Dramatic? If that’s the look that you are going for, then great, well done. However for the rest of us? Embrace the style that we have.

If you hate wearing shoes and feel like sneakers are the best thing ever created, then rock them to your hearts content. For the ladies in heels, the more power to you in those 5 inches. Style is whatever you decide to make it. Knowing who you are, what you love and at the end of the day how it makes you feel. So please ladies stop trying to look like the next person and just own your look, no matter what it is.

Sydney Wayser

Sydney Wayser embodies charm and folk in her debut LP The Colorful. Raised in LA but spending her summers growing up in France, she has an array of influences that range from John Lennon to the cooking channel. Her music remains playful with the use of toy instruments while still sounding very sophisticated. The third song on the album, Banjo Bayou, is backed with a catchy banjo and piano riff that captures listeners. Track eight on the album, Moonbowl, showcases a very different type of sound when she repeats the phrase "Play your part" over bass and the very contrasting sound of the xylophone. This contrast brings a different sound to the album that you don't hear in most music.

I was lucky enough to catch one of Sydney's live shows last month at Rockwood Music Hall in New York City. In concert, her full band consists of a guitarist, upright bassist, and a drummer that couldn't fit on the tiny stage in the packed room. The live show definitely gave off the vibe that she has some European influence, from her big floppy hat to her laid back demeanor. It is obvious that Sydney's talent is destined for larger spaces and she will only be moving forward with her career. You can check out Sydney's music on Myspace and catch Sydney at Glasslands in Brooklyn on July 29th or back at Rockwood Music Hall on August 11th in Manhattan.

The Creators Project: LONDON

This past Saturday in London was Vice Mag and Intel's travelling exhibit The Creators Project. The Creators Project was opened to the public during the day at Victoria House, and at night the place turned into an exclusive soiree de la nuit for London's scenesters and creative fledglings. Installations such as Radical Friend's The Digital Flesh, United Visual Artists' Triptych and Hereafter, and Karl Sader's Forest (aka Corridor) were some of my favorite works of the whole event. I actually got a chance to participate with the The Digital Flesh piece by allowing my face to be scanned into the huge database of other scanned faces the installation will be collecting throughout the CP tour. In September, the Digital Flesh Temple will debut at a ceremony in Beijing to "summon the Holographic Birth of the evolved organism," according to The Creators Project guide.  COOL RIGHT ?!

There were also some photos on display from Yeah Yeah Yeah's guitarist Nick Zinner and a screening of Spike Jonze's film I'm Here. One of my highlights was getting to meet London-based Fashion Designer Cassette Playa, but sadly I missed her presentation which was titled AW1011 Neuromance Augmented Reality Presentation. Below are some photos of Mos Architects' Rainbow Vomit, which allows users to create shapes or "heaps" in 3-D with custom projection mapping, and Mark Essen's video games that were placed throughout the venue and totally brought me back to my Nintendo-playing days.

Later in the evening, the Victoria House seemed to turn into party central. The performances to note  during the party were DJ sets by Peaches (mind you she did it while having a broken leg in a cast!), Mumdance, Filthy Dukes, and live sets by London's lo-fi quartet YUCK, Mark Ronson & The Business Intl, and Bloc Party Frontman gone solo - Kele (love his new single btw!)

All in all it was a pretty interesting experience. It's nice to know that there are people who are figuring out ways to experience art and technology beyond the limits of a laptop computer. Big props to all of those who are marching to the sound of their own digital beat!
Felix's Machines, Felix Thorn
The Creators Project will be hitting up Sao Paulo on 8/14, Seoul on 8/28, and a big finale in Beijing from 9/17-9/19. Go to them if you can!
