Do you love love like we love love?

Do you love love like we love love? Tell us about it!

Make us laugh, make us cry, make us want to give you a $100 gift certificate!

The top five "love stories", as judged by the hopeless romantics of New York Adorned, will be rewarded with a $100 gift certificate encrusted in candy hearts. You can use it for tattooing in the city shop or jewelry at either location. (Just kidding about the encrusting).

So, come on Romeo (or Juliet), show us what you've got!

State of the Union Address 2010

Obama went fairly conservative with his State of the Union speech. The middle road seemed to have appeased Republicans & Democrats and perhaps angered many staunch supporters on the left. But bless the man for sticking to health care reform & emphasizing that he INHERITED this economic fiasco from the previous administration.

What was your reaction? Do you still have HOPE?

What did other women have to say about the speech? Latoya Peterson at Jezebel gathered quotes on the reaction from women. Like the one below. For more quotes check out the full length article here.

Danielle Belton:

9:50 PM: Obama points out the whole "we ain't got no money" situation. We has a surplus. We lost a surplus. We got more debt. We didn't pay for wars. Another reminder that we were broke before he even came here. "Just statin' facts!" he says.

9:52 PM: And the spending freeze that doesn't include defense goes over in Busboys like a lead balloon. The guy sitting next to me yells for John Lewis to sit down because MLK wouldn't have stood up for that ish.

10:00 PM: Obama calls out the party of no. Essentially telling Republicans to stop blocking progress for the sake of progress. Then talks about the waging of the perpetual campaign atmosphere in our government.

10:02 PM: Oooo. Did the President just tell the Democrats to stop being perpetual bitches? I'm liking this speech!

Where Do You Stand On Medical Marijuana?

Although officially illegal by US federal government, as of 2010 there are 16 US states allowing the use of medical marijuana. It seems the times they are a-changing. Amongst these states, individual cities and counties have create laws for medical marijuana dispensaries, growers and patients.

Climate Battlefields

Climate change lawsuits against corporations are gaining steam in US courts! From NY TIMES article "Courts as Battlefields in Climate Fights" by John Schwartz

"Kivalina, an Inupiat Eskimo village of 400 perched on a barrier island north of the Arctic Circle, is accusing two dozen fuel and utility companies of helping to cause the climate change that it says is accelerating the island’s erosion.

In recent months, two federal appeals courts reversed decisions by federal district courts to dismiss climate-change lawsuits, allowing the cases to go forward. In Connecticut, environmental lawyers joined forces with attorneys general of eight states and the City of New York seeking a court order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

In Mississippi, Gulf Coast property owners claim that industry-produced emissions that contribute to climate change increased the potency of Hurricane Katrina in 2005."

However, this doesn't mean these suits will ever see their day in court. Read more about the uphill battle to fight corporate polluters and have them take responsibility for destroying the planet and its inhabitants.

Focus. Say No.

A simple yet helpful and motivational piece on the importance of FOCUS by Michele Miller. Take the 30 sec out of your day to read this then learn how to say NO.

"In a day when we have cell phones tethered to our being and an email Inbox that never stops dinging, focus is not easy to master.

But it’s really the only way anything of substance is created and maintained, from business plans, to marketing strategies, to blog posts.

I’ve had friends and clients over the years that can’t quite get a handle on this focus thing. They want to be all things to all people.

They think that by offering a broad selection of product they’ll swamp the market, when in reality they’re diluting their message and impact to the point that no one really cares.

Focus is hard. Sometimes, focus seems impossible. I know. I’ve been there (and still struggle with it).

You need a mantra. A daily question to ask yourself in order to keep you on the right track:

What Will I Say NO To, Today?

Focus means that something has to give. Some things that you’d really like to do, or take care of, or help with, must fall away.

It almost always means saying NO to someone you care about.

But until you start saying NO, you’ll never have the focus you need for the big success you dream about. You may end up with a handful of small successes, but not one of them will have any long-term impact.

I know, I know – it’s hard at first, but it definitely gets easier the more you do it. That’s because every time you do say it, your load gets just a little bit lighter. And you get a little less angry with yourself. And a little less depressed.

EXERCISE: Sit down and make a list of all the demands on your time and energy – home, family, business, staff, friends, organizations. Take 3 of those demands and say NO – not just to yourself, but out loud to the person who needs to hear it.

Then be bold and write down how it made you feel in the Comments section below. Does your load feel a little lighter already?"

One Mistress's Revenge

What kind of revenge would you take if you dated a married man for 10 years who eventually went back to his wife?

Would you spend over $300,000 to post 3-story billboards featuring the two you embraced in major cities like Atlanta, San Francisco & New York City?

Well someone out there did! Here's an image of one of these special billboards.

"The posters, which are three storeys high, show Miss Williams and the senior member of the president's hand-picked Economic Recovery Advisory Board below his initials and a quote saying: 'You are my soulmate forever.' " via Daily Mail

13-Year Old Girl Gets 90 Lashes For A Concealed Cell Phone At School

image courtesy of daily mail uk

Here's the deal. Saudi Arabia is deplorable. Forget the term 2nd class citizen, the country treats women like 7th class citizens.

There is an extreme policy of "sex segregation" - often times women in their own homes have separate entrances, cannot be seen in public without a family member have an literacy rate of 70% and less than 5% make up the workforce. With a 2008 Royal Decree, the only requirement needed to allow women to enter hotels are their national ID cards, and the hotel must inform the nearest police station of their room reservation and length of stay, however this happens with everybody staying in the hotel not just women. Before that they were not allowed to enter a hotel or furnished apartment without a chaperone.

According to Daily Mail "a 13-year-old girl has been sentenced to 90 lashes and two months' prison in Saudi Arabia after she took a mobile phone to school.

The punishment is harsher than dished out to some robbers and looters!

Saudi Arabia, a leading US ally in the Middle East, is an absolute monarchy controlled by the Al-Saud ruling tribe, and lacks any legal code."

Why is the US allying itself with a nation that has little regard for the rights of women? We stood up to nations like South Africa with its apartheid policy, shouldn't we do the same for sex segregation? Double standard much?

Dear Mama: Breaking From Tradition

"Modern Germany may be run by a woman — Chancellor Angela Merkel, routinely called the world’s most powerful female politician — but it seems no coincidence that she is childless.

Across the developed world, a combination of the effects of birth control, social change, political progress and economic necessity has produced a tipping point: numerically, women now match or overtake men in the work force and in education.

In the developing world, too, the striving of women and girls for schooling, small loans and status is part of another immense upheaval: the rise of nations in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

In both these worlds, women can remain trapped by tradition. Now, a social revolution — peaceful, but profound — is driving a search for new ways of combining family life and motherhood with a more powerful role for women."

I Have A Dream - Let's Hear It For The Girls!

Today is a holiday commemorating civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. He has forever changed the world in which we live in. Much gratitude to his contributions.

We're all aware of the amazing contributions that Dr. King, Jr lent to the civil rights movement and like every movement, revolution, posse or gang, women played a key role. Here are quotes by women who helped make a difference in this movement.

"I want history to remember me not just as the first black woman to be elected to Congress, not as the first black woman to have made a bid for the presidency of the United States, but as a black woman who lived in the 20th century and dared to be herself."
- Shirley Chisholm

"No march, movement, or agenda that defines manhood in the narrowest terms and seeks to make women lesser partners in this quest for equality can be considered a positive step."
- Angela Davis

"Nobody's free until everybody's free." - Fannie Lou Hamer

“Greatness is not measured by what a man or woman accomplishes, but by the opposition he or she has overcome to reach his goals.” - Dorothy Height

"Women, if the soul of the nation is to be saved, I believe that you must become its soul." - Coretta Scott King

Mobile Phone Accidents Increase, Don't Get Sent To The ER!

Turns out more and more pedestrians are admitted to the emergency room due to mobile phone related accidents than ever before!
Examples of such visits include a 16-year-old boy who walked into a telephone pole while texting and suffered a concussion; a 28-year-old man who tripped and fractured a finger on the hand gripping his cellphone; and a 68-year-old man who fell off the porch while talking on a cellphone, spraining a thumb and an ankle and causing dizziness.

Aid for Haiti

Yesterday an earthquake rocked Haiti and decimated the capital of Port-au-Prince. Thousands -- and maybe more -- are feared dead. The international community is coming together to assist Haitians with medicine, clean water, aid workers and
more. While you may not be able to get involved in direct relief measures you can assist from afar. Fast acting organizations such as Yele (Wyclef Jean) and the American Red Cross have created text-to-help programs.

Yele

Click here for more info via Wyclef's Twitter page.

American Red Cross

Text 'HAITI' to 90999 to donate $10 to American Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti.

You must follow confirmation prompts in order for your contribution to be rendered valid.

Bianca Jagger. Bad. Ass.

Nicaraguan-born Bianca Jagger is fascinating. An actress, party girl, jet-setter and formerly married to one of the biggest rock stars in the world (The Rolling Stones' Mick Jagger), she leads an activist life - committed to supporting human rights. Heavily influenced by Gandhi, she has supported the Sandinista revolution in her home country, worked with the International Red Cross, opposes the death penalty, helped the indigenous Yanomami tribe in Brazil, serves as a Goodwill Ambassador and is Chair of the Bianca Jagger Human Rights Foundation.

Just the kind of LLady we love. More on Bianca Jagger here.

Pro Nails

Ladies, we all know we love our nails looking good and on point. It all started off with us growing up and wanting to be like mommy, rocking the red nail polish. However in our generation its about individuality, from the pinks the purples, orange, lime green and so on. However there is always the idea of doing some sick, 3-D avant garde designs. Who doesnt want to stand out amongst the crowd?
Melinda Mann Rivera, the founder of HER and HER Nails, has finally launched the new site herandhernails.com which is definitely something to take a look at.
