HerStory: Adrianna Giuliani

Adrianna Giuliani
possesses one of the most creative minds I have ever come across. At the ripe age of 29-years-old, she holds down the title of "Vice President" for one of the largest and most respected Public Relations agencies, Ketchum. I've had the great pleasure of working with her, for her and learning from her. She has, without a doubt, given me some of the best advice and insight. Her unique and clever views on a variety of topics are awe-inspiring and I find myself wanting to do the listening, rather than the talking (if you know me at all - that's a rare occurrence!) I consider Adrianna a true mentor, both from a career and personal level. That said, I am honored to give you HerStory, from HerPerspective.

With seven years of service under her belt, she has experienced four different job roles at the agency. She's passed down the same advice to me that her mentor passed along to her.

"My advice to other career gals comes from one of my favorite mentors, Lauren Dougherty who is now the Director of Marketing at Mattel. She told me that the best way to get the job you want is to start doing it. Eventually people will realize what you’ve accomplished and your title will catch up to what you are delivering. It hasn’t failed yet…"
Aside from her innovative thinking in the office, Adrianna has the typical "busy city-girl" lifestyle. Hip to the trendiest restaurants and newest art shows, she finds it liberating to slow down and really appreciate all that New York City has to offer. She is passionate about volunteering and was recently selected as a mentor for Three Dot Dash, an organization that supports Global Teen Leaders from around the world who are working on projects that promote peace and humanity. Modest as always, she says, "I'm supposed to be mentoring them, but I have a feeling I'm the one who will be learning a lot."

Adrianna is also working Foundry Media on a book titled Great Textpectations. It chronicles how people date in present day, since "it's obviously all more 'Text and the City' than 'Sex and the City.'" Showcasing her impressive writing skills, she also runs her own blog, TechRomance, where she has been quite successful in creating her own language. Read for yourselves:
  • MILF: "Moms I Like To Facebook," an homage to all the moms that infiltrated Facebook in 2009
  • Great Textpectations: Building a relationship up over text messages and then realizing it's not what you thought it was
  • Textual Tension: Sexy and flirtatious text messages. Note: this is NOT 'sexting'. Also note: she prefers the phrase 'sex messaging'
  • Fauxmance: When everyone thinks you and the person you're dating are a good match ... except for you
So there you have it. This chick is the bomb. Sassy, sexy, quick-witted and classy - Adrianna Giuliani is a Woman To Love.

A Woman's Worth - $3 Trillion Bucks!

Women business owners have a MAJOR impact on the economy. $3 Trillion bucks baby!

In her article on Huffington Post, Ladies Lotto member Adelaide Lancaster writes

"Apparently the independence we women entrepreneurs seek is coming at a big price. The benefits of entrepreneurship are driving more women than ever into self-employment, yet the financial rewards necessary to make this trend stick, still elude most of us.

In October the Center for Women's Business Research published the first ever study on the economic impact of women business owners in the US.

The following data were rightly heralded by many media outlets as a great triumph:

* There are approximately 8 million women-owned businesses nationwide

* Women-owned businesses employ 23 million workers (16% of total US jobs)

* Women business owners account for approximately $3 trillion dollars of total economic impact

Pretty impressive stuff."

We are definitely impressed. What's rather alarming is that regardless of this MAJOR economic contribution, women are STILL getting shorted! Read more from her article HERE.

And we highly recommend spreading the word to raise awareness and DEMAND MORE!

Build Your Brand - 8 Essential Steps

Build Your Brand

By Barbara Reinhold

Who makes your favorite shoes or outfits? What beverage calls your name when you need a pick-me-up? Whose movies won't you miss? Whose help do you seek when you want a project done right, at home or at work?

All of these questions involve your reactions to a particular brand -- a collection of assumptions about quality, appeal and reliability that you've made in response to repeated experience with a variety of possible products, people or services. Here's the important thing: Whether you like to think about it or not, right now there are people thinking about your very own brand of whatever you are and do, and they're deciding if they want to make it one of their favorites.

International branding strategist Robin Fisher Roffer, author of Make a Name for Yourself, suggests eight steps to help women develop and project their own brands.

-Eight Essential Steps

1. Identify the primary "product" (service, resource, special ability, etc.) you have to offer others.

2. Identify your core values. What really matters to you?

3. Identify your passions. What things or ideas do you love?

4. Identify your talents. What have you always been recognized for (particularly as a kid)? What do you do better than most other people? What skills do people seem to notice in you?

5. From your hopefully long list of talents and qualities, choose the top five, the ones you do best and enjoy doing the most.

6. Weave the items on all your lists into a statement of your specialty. What are you particularly gifted at delivering?

7. Write a paragraph emphasizing your specialty and your five key talents, weaving in your most important values, passions and skills.

8. Now add a tag line to your brand.

-The Tag Line Tells Your Story

A coach I know who consults by phone -- primarily helping six-figure earners work their way even further up the corporate ladder -- goes by this tag line: "A coach for successful people to help them be even more successful." A senior project manager working in the crossfire between the marketing group and packaging designers at a stressful manufacturing facility has developed this tag line: "An efficient problem solver who understands and enjoys both the creativity of designers and the practicality of marketers." My tag line for my counseling and coaching practice is this: "The permissionary -- a visionary realist to help you discover and manifest your dreams.

A tag line's shorthand helps other people remember a key point about you. At the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts chapter of the NAWBO (National Association of Women Business Owners) breakfast meetings, every member and guest stands up and introduces herself via her tag line, or verbal business card. In this organization, the women remember each other's tag lines as easily as their names, and after each month's meeting, hundreds of ripples go out about each of the women attending and what she has to offer. And it works for entrepreneurs and employees alike.

-Get the Word Out

Once you've worked over your tag line and the other items on the list for a few days or weeks, it's time to take them public with someone you trust. Keeping them secret is a sure way to never act on them.

The road to career disappointment is littered with lists, dreams and goals never shared with anyone. So get your "brand me" musings out into the light of day to solicit support and constructive criticism from someone else. And you could be a brand advisor for that person in return. And it would be even better is you could get four or five women together regularly to encourage and critique each other's branding strategies and activities.

Roxanne's Revenge

Photo Courtesy of Watts / DAILY NEWS

In 1984, at the age of 14, Roxanne Shante, a single teenage mom raised by one parent, hailing the projects of Queens, released "Roxanne's Revenge," a response to rap group UTFO's mega-hit "Roxanne, Roxanne." She was signed by Warner Music, released two albums and by the time she was 19, she'd been chewed up and spit out of the beast. Disillusioned, broke & living back in Queensbridge, she remembered a very small yet very important clause in her recording contract - Warner Music would fit the bill for her education. For life.

Well, fast forward to 2009, Ms. Shante (born Lolita Gooden) holds her PhD in Psychology from Cornell University. By all means, if you're going to get a doctorate degree, you might as well go Ivy League, right?

It wasn't easy to get Warner to cough up the dough, but Roxanne had some help from women like Marguerita Grecco from Marymount Manhattan College.

Today, Roxanne awards $5,000 scholarships to female rappers through the non-profit Hip Hop Association.

July/Music Spotlight Part I

In preparation for the Ladies Lotto New York July/Music conference on Wednesday, July 29th, I'd like to introduce you to our featured panelists. First up, we have Karena Cameron of Nylon Studios.

Karena Cameron is an Australian in New York with a colorful career spanning music, advertising, media and fashion.

From 2000, Karena worked as the Promotions Manager at seminal youth radio broadcaster Kiss FM and in '02 donned the hat of Marketing and PR Manager at indie record label and distributor Stomp Entertainment. A hiatus in the rag trade followed for the next two years where she specialized in the creation of seasonal brand campaigns and producing runway shows for Fashion Weeks' around the globe. Despite the exponential growth of her wardrobe, her passion for all things musical lured her back into the industry.

In 2005, Karena joined label giant Sony BMG as Marketing Manager. It was a very interesting time to be involved with a major label during this time - essentially at the height of the record industry's fall - but it was probably the most rousing in terms of evolution. Strategy re-entered the mind-set of marketing as did a need to off-set traditionally high marketing costs with external funding. OPM (other peoples money) became key to getting your artist's music heard, so while producing video clips, album artwork and working on promotional tours, Karena worked on several key commercial rights deals linking brand and bands.

In 2007, Karena joined Nylon Studios and relocated to New York to set up their US operation. Nylon is a music production boutique specializing in original composition, licensing and music content for brands. To date, the company has been a great success (particularly by recession standards) with a continual increase in client base and areas of specialization. To wrap 2009, Karena plans to launch a dot com (surprisingly non-music related) as a small side-project and continue spreading the Nylon word throughout New York.

Check out Nylon Studios to see examples of their work!

And of course make sure to hit up the July conference at the Cornichon Cafe in Brooklyn, at 7 pm!

Music Makes the Ladies Come Together

image from Molly's facebook page

Music is pervasive and apart of daily culture. That's why Ladies Lotto thought it'd be fun to put together July events surrounding the incredible women who are making moves in the music industry (in various capacities).

We asked Molly Neuman to speak in NYC on July 29th.

Originally from Washington, DC, Molly Neuman began her career in music as the drummer for the seminal riot girl band Bratmobile (ZOMG!!!). After graduating from The Evergreen State College in 1992, she moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and began to work at Lookout Records in 1994. In 1997 she became a partner and has been instrumental in the signing and development of such artists as The Donnas, Pretty Girls Make Graves, Ted Leo/Pharmacists among many others.

In 2001 she co founded Indivision Management, an artist management company dedicated to preserving artists autonomy in their careers while providing them with complete management services.

Molly continues to play music with friends because this is what keeps her heart light. She is currently based in New York City.

Molly will be speaking at Ladies Lotto's next event. SAVE THE DATE NY: JULY 29th!

More info to come this week about our other 2 guest speakers in NYC + other guest speakers in other cities...

The "Rules" for Women Who Engage in Social Media

Lipsticking guest blogger, Lena West, Chief of Social Media Strategy at xynoMedia recently posted "Rules" of Social Media Engagement for Women. They are:

  1. You're not one of the guys nor will you ever be.
  2. Use emoticons and exclamation points sparingly.
  3. IM'ing at night, is IM'ing at night.
  4. Keep your beau to yourself.
  5. The women are watching.
For an in-depth explanation of her rules, please visit Lipsticking. http://www.lipsticking.com/2009/04/rules-of-social-media-engagement-for-women.html

Curious to know your thoughts about these. Is she on point or just plain wrong? Would you add or take anything away?

Recycle Reduce Reuse Like Rayne

"Summer Rayne Oakes graduated from Cornell University —an entomologist and environmental scientist by training. In 2000 in the midst of her studies, Oakes embarked on a journey of cause-related modeling and innovative sustainable design/development projects to push sustainability issues through fashion and media, a position which earned her the name of “The Eco-Model ”. In addition to this, Summer Rayne is now a spokesperson, resident expert, and youngest Board of Advisors for Planet Green , Discovery Network’s new eco-lifestyle network that launched June 4, 2008 to 50 million households.

Oakes’ work spans multiple disciplines, all of which are deeply imbued in environmental issues. Her studies in waste management, organic contaminants & environmental health; mine reclamation; rainforest regeneration; invasive species; landscape impact analysis; sustainable development; and aquatic entomology and stream water quality overlap with her environmentally-relevant, values-based modeling , for which she is largely recognized. In February of 2009, she’ll release her first book, style, naturally: the savvy shopping guide to sustainable fashion and beauty published by Chronicle Books."
