Daydream Believer
It's time to let your mind wander!! Daydreaming is more than simple escapism according to MIT researchers Susan Whitfield-Gabrieli and John Gabrieli. By using devices to scan the brain's activity during daydreaming, "it turns out that cultivating an active idle mind, or teaching yourself how to daydream effectively, might actually encourage the sort of long-range neural connections that make us smart."

Megan Geckler's Woven Colors
Megan Geckler installation from Wexner Center for the Arts on Vimeo.
Los Angeles artist Megan Wexler's vision is extraordinary.
Geckler uses only strips of translucent plastic tape in her installations, positioning them and weaving them together to create surface patterns and curvilinear forms. In this case, she has lined several walls and wrapped several of the center's iconic columns in tape stripes and designed a loosely woven form that hovers like a canopy above the center's lower lobby and café area. Geckler is based in Los Angeles, and her work has been exhibited at the Santa Monica Museum of Art, the Torrance Art Museum, Women & Their Work in Austin, Texas, and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

Just In Time For the Holidays: Cherry Bomb Mix by Nire!
Just released from one of our favorite NYC DJ's, Nire, the Cherry Bomb Mix is perfect for the holidays and the rest of your 2011.
Urgent Action Needed to Keep Control of OUR Food!

After a long, complicated process on which this dangerous bill was on and off the table, the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act S.510 was passed through to the House for a final lame duck vote which could be as soon as today!
In short, this bill is put forth by large Agrobusiness companies such as the infamous Monsanto, and threatens our right to keep the freedom to choose what food to grow and put in our bodies. It goes directly against the localvore, slow food movement and is a big, scary step in the wrong direction.
Please contact your representative TODAY and urge them to vote NO on S.510. Citizens for Health has a great campaign against S.510 and have an easy form to use in contacting your representative here.
For more detailed info regarding this bill, here is a great article from Natural News.
The vote will take place in the next 48 hours so we must act now!
Grow on.

MONKI SEE, MONKI DO
All photos courtesy of Monki
My first impression of the store made me think I was transported back to England in 1968. Did I step into famed swinging sixties store Granny Takes A trip on King Road, London; or did Sid & Marty Krofft (creators of groovy TV shows H.R. Pufnstuf and The Bugaloos) go into interior design, and I just didn't know about it?
The more I wandered around the shop with sheer amazement in my eyes, the more I got to analyze the small details of the interior set up and the products that were organized all over the place. Then I realized - I had entered into my own personal retail heaven. A store that could combine the aesthetics from my two favorite decades where my own style is heavily influenced from - a mix of sharp, geometric contrasts and clean lines of the 60s, as well as the over-sized, boldly structured garments of the 80s. Somehow Monki has managed to take inspiration from these two decades yet spin them with a fun, youthful, and modern twist that will surely appeal to ladies who like to make a statement without being over the top.
Even though Monki was started in Sweden, a lot of the inspiration for their clothes come from the streets of Toyko - and you know what, it works! It's not gawdy, nor tacky stuff here - it's smart, colorful clothes that have an underlying chicness and sophistication. It should also be noted that Monki is the little sister of Weekday (home to hip denim label Cheap Monday), another great concept store based out of Sweden.
If you don't happen to live in Sweden or Denmark, you can also find Monki stores in Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Finland, and Hong Kong. There are no plans for Monki to open up in the United States for next year, but you never know... Fingers crossed we can get at least an online store set up for us Yanks in the mean time!

Give to Girls Around the Globe!

Five hundred million girls cannot read or write. Yet, reading and writing skills not only allow women to express themselves, but also give them self-sufficiency. Literacy gives women power.
This December, LitWorld, a global literacy organization, is leading a campaign to benefit their project, Girls Clubs for Literacy. Girls Clubs for Literacy is a project that provides literacy and leadership workshops for girls in countries including Iraq, Kenya & Liberia. Girls Clubs provide mentorship, health & safety information, and a safe space for self-expression. LitWorld Girls Clubs for literacy create a network of girls worldwide using literacy for power and social action, and girls use their newfound skills to convey issues of health, information, safety and inspiration to other young women in their community.
This Holiday season, LitWorld accepted a challenge from Global Giving to raise $4,000 by December 22nd, which will help them launch five new Girls Clubs sites throughout the world. As little as $10 helps! Please check out the Global Giving Link HERE to make a contribution, and check out their Girls Club Blog link to find more about the Girls Club work!
Demand Human Rights Every Day

Today the international community observes Human Rights Day. This year's theme is human rights defenders who act to end discrimination. Today, Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo sits in a prison cell in China. After more than twenty years of championing human rights, in 2008 he was sentenced to 11 years in prison and two years of deprivation of political rights. While bureaucrats agreed to international agreements with their fingers crossed behind their backs, Liu was protesting at Tianamen Square. He was also a co-author of Charter 08; outlining the rights to which all Chinese citizens are entitled.
Join the chorus of people demanding basic human rights all over the world. Speak up and make every day Human Rights day!

When 50 Foot Reels Attack: A Farewell to Kodachrome

Don't bother asking your momma not to take your Kodachrome away. The film geek's beloved Kodachrome Super 8 film has expired but there will be one last hurrah (okay, two) in Los Angeles this week. First, the 10th Annual Attack of the 50 Foot Reels where daredevil crews will shoot a film under almost dogmatic rules; one roll of film per crew; in-camera edits only and no viewing of the finished product until the night of the screening. Second, guests will gather for one last glorious night at RIP Kodachrome: A Wake Screening, complete with film and slide screenings, eulogies, music and a pot luck. I'd say Kodachrome is being sent off in a grand fashion.

Making Art Amongst Friends
Fellow Chicagoan Melissa Stinson and I stopped by the Levis space in the old Deitch gallery in Soho for a shoot from photographer Kareem Black. Tokyo TV was in town from Japan to shadow stylist Valissa Yoe for an upcoming documentary and the space was busy with an audience of fellow artists and fans. The styling was on point, the sick helmet Valissa pulled from Kerin Rose worked perfectly with singer Raquel Reeds futuristic style. Raquel just released a video for her new track "I'll Show You" with none other than Redman. Please peep the hot pink comb stuck in his fade!

The Levis Workshop is open until December and is open to the public; photoshoots, printing and general art making goes on all day in the building so be sure to stop by. They also have a photobooth you can shoot and print your portraits like the old school photstrips. (It's a bit addicting).
I'll be shooting portraits of a few of my favorite musicians, actors and artist friends this Wednesday afternoon in the space from 3-5 so stop by and say hello!
