36 years ago today, the United States Supreme Court settled a case resulting in a landmark decision allowing for the legalization of abortion. The decision was based on right to privacy under the Due Clause of the 14th Amendment and overturned state & federal laws effectively ensuring women have the right to determined what's best for themselves (duh).
Nevertheless, it's still a polemic issue but as President Obama stated in his inauguration address, "we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics."

Thank you for posting this. Today, on this anniversary, there were protests on the Mall in DC (2 days after inauguration) by "pro-life," or really "anti-choice," groups and they invited Obama to speak on his pro-choice position. He declined but offered a statement essentially saying that women's bodies are private matters and no business of the government. A STARK contrast from Dubya.
It's about time we have a pro-choice prez and one that strongly advocates respect for women's bodies. Maybe it's because he has 2 daughters, but it's also because he's brilliant and gets it.
I have some links on my blog (goddessesrising.blogspot.com) with stories about links between abortion and poverty, abortion and women of color, and a non-profit in NYC that provides abortions to low income women (some from other more restrictive states).
