Ladies Lotto Got LLow Down at SXSW 2010

LLadies from all over the U.S. have been clamoring for chapters in their cities for a while now. Austin, TX has always been on our list because it has a thriving music scene and lots of ladies calling the shots. It's also where music happens in a major way that breaks new bands and refreshes more seasoned performers; we're talking SXSW. So what better time to launch our Austin chapter than during SXSW 2010?

First, there was an exclusive networking event at Austin's Parkside which brought together LLadies from New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Austin and then some. Then the gloves came out as the LLadies and guests watched several great acts throw down in the ring at Music Gym as host, Ruby Veridiano-Ching called the shots. Don't worry; no one got hurt and it was all for a good cause -- to benefit Girls Rock Camp Austin. LLow Down performers included The Colourist, Frank and Derol, Automatic Panic, DJ Cat NYC, Patches, Trash Yourself and more. All in all it was a night of eclectic fun; a little something for everyone.

Shout outs have to be given to all the LLadies involved including Susan Justus, Dayna Ghiraldi, Sarah Cirkiel, Ruby Veridiano-Ching, KK Graham, Maria Gonzales, Fiona Bloom, Mina Rofeh and Giovannah Chiu. However, stand up and give a hand to the masterminds DJ Cat NYC and publicist, Lorraine Lamont (Lola Ink). These LLadies really helped make everything happen with the guidance of Ladies Lotto founder, Natalie Blacker.

Since you weren't there we're hooking you up with a little something. Check out the video! We've got NYC beat boxer Shockwave doing what he does best; The Beatards dropping knowledge via The Pixies and Miz Metro doing a fresh SXSW freestyle. SXSW x LL = real ill!

Three Films to See

Toe to Toe
Black girl on a scholarship with a chip on her shoulder, white girl from a privileged upbringing with nothing better to do than act up...typical plot line, right? Maybe not. Toe to Toe introduces us to Tosha and Jesse, lacrosse teammates, who despite their differences become close. Unfortunately, they're bond is sorely tested by unavoidable societal circumstances. Newcomers Sonequa Martin and Louisa Krause bring it.

Toe to Toe is the latest film from director, writer and producer Emily Abt's
Pureland Pictures.

Beyond Ipanema
Brazilian samba music is brimming with African rhythms and Latin influences. It's about time that someone documented it's roots and the impact it's had on popular music. Interviews with David Byrne, MIA, and the legendary Gilberto Gil (among others) give insight into and introduce us to why so many love Brazil's rich and exciting musical culture. You won't have to drag us to see this one. In fact, we're in the mood for a little Jorge Ben Jor.

P-Star Rising
How many times have we seen kiddie rappers (Kris Kross was the bomb dot com) come and go? We've seen a few but none like Priscilla aka P-Star. Grinding at nine years-old to become a successful rapper; we follow P, her father and older sister from a shelter, to a heartrending search for her drug-addict mother and to minor success. P's spunk and moxie will pull you in.
