Get yourselves some hydroponics...

No, not that kind!

New York's Science Barge is a prototype, sustainable urban farm and environmental education center. It is the only fully functioning demonstration of renewable energy supporting sustainable food production in New York City. The Science Barge grows tomatoes, cucumbers, and lettuce with zero net carbon emissions, zero chemical pesticides, and zero runoff.

Stop by for a free tour of its recirculating greenhouse hydroponics system (translation: plant roots are immersed in recycled, nutrient-rich water, instead of soil) and listen to the guides hawk the perks of growing food in an urban environment. Note: Tastings are included, if you catch 'em when they're ripe. It's a bloom with a view...

The Science Barge Jul. through Oct. at Riverside Park South at West 70th St. (212-757-7560). Tours, weather permitting: Tue.-Fri., 4 p.m.; Sat. 12 p.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m., and 4 p.m.
