Kung Fu Nun

A Kung Fu expert has towed eight cars 30m with her hair in Kaifeng City in China.

Zhang Ting Tang fell short of her target of 100m but was still pleased with the stunt.

The 52-year-old, who credited her martial arts skills to the strength of her hair, then shaved it off so that she could officially be recognised as a nun.

The Power of Tresses

Female hair has been source of power and dispute throughout the ages. Even today, there are several cultures who consider a woman's power of persuasion to be found in her tresses, requiring hair to be covered.

Although hair is a universal commonality amongst women, black women in particular, have an interesting relationship and cultural connotation that exists with their hair. Some choose to straighten, others to wrap, while many braid or dread. But often times, it's not just a matter of mood so much as it is a cultural and/or political decision.

Getting “good hair” often means transforming one’s tightly coiled roots; but it is also more freighted, for many African-American women and some men, than simply a choice about grooming. Straightening hair has been perceived as a way to be more acceptable to certain relatives, as well as to the white establishment.

“If your hair is relaxed, white people are relaxed,” the comedian Paul Mooney, sporting an Afro, says in the documentary “Good Hair,” which won a jury prize at the Sundance film festival and comes out in October. “If your hair is nappy, they’re not happy.”

SOURCE: Catherine Saint Louis for THE NY TIMES

Writer Catherine Saint Louis goes in-depth about what politics and cultural innuendo are involved in a simple choice - how to wear your hair as a black woman today. Included with this article is a multimedia where 9 women discuss their tresses.

Warm Ice Cream?

Ben & Jerry’s ice cream is pondering how to make an ice cream that is made, shipped and sold warm, with the consumer taking the final step of actually freezing the product.

The goal would be to reduce energy and emissions spent on keeping ice cream cold throughout the supply chain, reports TimesOnline.

The company has its scientists, along with researchers from Cambridge University, hard at work on a solution. So far, the optimal formula is not in sight, however. The company already has taken steps to improve energy efficiency at ice cream processing plants in the UK, Germany, Italy and France.

In addition, it is upgrading 2 million refrigerated and frozen cases that it supplies to retailers who sell Unilever products. For instance, about 400,000 of the units are now powered by propane, consuming 15 percent less energy.

Build Your Brand - 8 Essential Steps

Build Your Brand

By Barbara Reinhold

Who makes your favorite shoes or outfits? What beverage calls your name when you need a pick-me-up? Whose movies won't you miss? Whose help do you seek when you want a project done right, at home or at work?

All of these questions involve your reactions to a particular brand -- a collection of assumptions about quality, appeal and reliability that you've made in response to repeated experience with a variety of possible products, people or services. Here's the important thing: Whether you like to think about it or not, right now there are people thinking about your very own brand of whatever you are and do, and they're deciding if they want to make it one of their favorites.

International branding strategist Robin Fisher Roffer, author of Make a Name for Yourself, suggests eight steps to help women develop and project their own brands.

-Eight Essential Steps

1. Identify the primary "product" (service, resource, special ability, etc.) you have to offer others.

2. Identify your core values. What really matters to you?

3. Identify your passions. What things or ideas do you love?

4. Identify your talents. What have you always been recognized for (particularly as a kid)? What do you do better than most other people? What skills do people seem to notice in you?

5. From your hopefully long list of talents and qualities, choose the top five, the ones you do best and enjoy doing the most.

6. Weave the items on all your lists into a statement of your specialty. What are you particularly gifted at delivering?

7. Write a paragraph emphasizing your specialty and your five key talents, weaving in your most important values, passions and skills.

8. Now add a tag line to your brand.

-The Tag Line Tells Your Story

A coach I know who consults by phone -- primarily helping six-figure earners work their way even further up the corporate ladder -- goes by this tag line: "A coach for successful people to help them be even more successful." A senior project manager working in the crossfire between the marketing group and packaging designers at a stressful manufacturing facility has developed this tag line: "An efficient problem solver who understands and enjoys both the creativity of designers and the practicality of marketers." My tag line for my counseling and coaching practice is this: "The permissionary -- a visionary realist to help you discover and manifest your dreams.

A tag line's shorthand helps other people remember a key point about you. At the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts chapter of the NAWBO (National Association of Women Business Owners) breakfast meetings, every member and guest stands up and introduces herself via her tag line, or verbal business card. In this organization, the women remember each other's tag lines as easily as their names, and after each month's meeting, hundreds of ripples go out about each of the women attending and what she has to offer. And it works for entrepreneurs and employees alike.

-Get the Word Out

Once you've worked over your tag line and the other items on the list for a few days or weeks, it's time to take them public with someone you trust. Keeping them secret is a sure way to never act on them.

The road to career disappointment is littered with lists, dreams and goals never shared with anyone. So get your "brand me" musings out into the light of day to solicit support and constructive criticism from someone else. And you could be a brand advisor for that person in return. And it would be even better is you could get four or five women together regularly to encourage and critique each other's branding strategies and activities.

Roxanne's Revenge

Photo Courtesy of Watts / DAILY NEWS

In 1984, at the age of 14, Roxanne Shante, a single teenage mom raised by one parent, hailing the projects of Queens, released "Roxanne's Revenge," a response to rap group UTFO's mega-hit "Roxanne, Roxanne." She was signed by Warner Music, released two albums and by the time she was 19, she'd been chewed up and spit out of the beast. Disillusioned, broke & living back in Queensbridge, she remembered a very small yet very important clause in her recording contract - Warner Music would fit the bill for her education. For life.

Well, fast forward to 2009, Ms. Shante (born Lolita Gooden) holds her PhD in Psychology from Cornell University. By all means, if you're going to get a doctorate degree, you might as well go Ivy League, right?

It wasn't easy to get Warner to cough up the dough, but Roxanne had some help from women like Marguerita Grecco from Marymount Manhattan College.

Today, Roxanne awards $5,000 scholarships to female rappers through the non-profit Hip Hop Association.

Women at Arms

Before 2001, America’s military women had rarely seen ground combat. Their jobs kept them mostly away from enemy lines, as military policy dictates.
- Lizette Alvarez for The NY TIMES

It's official US military policy to not allow women in combat situations. Oddly enough, I am quite familiar with this policy. At the tender age of 15 I spent a summer arguing against such military policy, urging the Senate to pass a law reversing such policy (this was some nerd mock government stuff). Nevertheless, it's STILL an ongoing discussion, evoking emotion and passion (whether you are for or against).

The NY Times has recently published a great series entitled Women At Arms addressing women's roles in contemporary military situations. Highly recommend taking a few minutes to watch Lizette Alvarez's "Women At Arms: Beyond the Wire" and G.I. Jane Breaks the Combat Barrier to see what our lady troops are really experiencing and how they feel about this policy.

Sugar, Sugar

Something sweet for a dull Monday...sugar-ific products that smell divine:

Draw out our miles and make them wearisome;

But yet your fair discourse hath been as sugar,

Making the hard way sweet and delectable.

Is Organic Food Really Better For You?

Lately I have been hearing a lot of
news reports claiming that organic produce isn't actually any better for you than its pesticide-laden counterparts.
But not only are there benefits for you, there are benefits for the environment which we shouldn't forget about.

Ella Nemcova (aka
The Regal Vegan) summed it up very nicely for us in her weekly newsletter. Here's a summary:

Top 10 Benefits of Eating Organic

  1. Waterways aren't contaminated by chemical run-off from farms.
  2. Pesticide-related health risks to farm workers (and anyone living in the area) are eliminated.
  3. You will dramatically reduce the amount of pesticide residue you ingest on a daily basis. Pesticides ingested by pregnant women may be linked to birth defects and health issues.
  4. Biodiversity is increased with the use of buffer crops, and by avoiding killing or harming insects and other wildlife that is not a threat to crops.
  5. Pesticides are responsible for a staggering amount of greenhouse gas emissions.
  6. You can avoid eating any genetically modified foods.
  7. Reduced reliance on chemical and agri-engineering corporations is good for farmers.
  8. Organic farming is healthier for the soil.
  9. Organic dairy cows are not injected with milk-boosting hormones such as recombinant bovine somatotrophin (rBST)—which may increase insulin levels in humans.
  10. Organics taste better. It's just my humble opinion, but I've noticed a difference in the taste of strawberries, peaches, grapes and leafy greens, so if you're still skeptical, I dare you to put your faith in conventionally grown foods to the test.

Cock Blocking

For years researchers have been working on microbicides that could help prevent the spread of HIV. Now, they may be one step closer as scientists at the University of Utah think they may have finally found a gel that actually works! The gel, which is being called a 'molecular condom' by bioengineering professor Patrick Kiser is inserted into the vagina prior to sex. When the gel comes in contact with semen it turns semi-solid and blocks HIV from entering vaginal cells. Doctoral candidate Julie Jay wanted to work on a vaginal gel because she realized socioeconomic issues and cultural norms make it hard for some women to negotiate safer sex.

Scientists are also hoping the gel can be used as a contraceptive; and eventually block the herpes and human papilloma virus (HPV) which is associated with cervical and other cancers. Talk about killing two birds with one stone -- gel in this case. Human trials are expected to begin in the next few years. The sociosexual implications of the gel -- if it works -- will be huge.

Foods From Far Away

Far Foods is an alternative packaging concept for supermarket produce, highlighting the distances that some foods travel from and the resultant carbon dioxide released during the journey. The receipt features a boarding card style tear-off strip.

James Reynold's alternative packaging concept for supermarket produce is definitely a mind tickler. The London-based graphic designer, whose "Far Foods" idea was featured today on swissmiss, suggests grocers take the guesswork out of food-mile calculations with labels that place that information front and center.

Unfortunately this isn't real yet, but hopefully one day it will be.
