Women in Technology

As an expanded update to last year's article entitled "The Most Influential Women in Web 2.0," Fastcompany.com has released a new list: "The Most Influential Women in Technology." On the list are entrepreneurs, such as the cofounder of Flickr, Caterina Fake and (ahem, ahem) bloggers, like Gina Trapani, writer of Lifehacker, among other groups such as gamers and brainiacs.

Jaydiohead

Jaydiohead; produced by Max Tannone, aka Minty Fresh Beats proves yet again how versatile Jay-Z is as an artist. I don't care what anyone (rapper, critic etc.) says; he is the most prolific hip hop lyricist of all time. His lyrics are the perfect accompaniment for most any music. Radiohead has always been ahead of the curve and is constantly pushing the envelope so this unofficial collaboration makes perfect sense.

Wouldn't it be sick if they took this on tour!?

Thank You for Being a Friend

May 13, 1922 – April 25, 2009

Bea Arthur was born Bernice Frankel in Brooklyn New York 86 years ago. On Saturday, April 25th she passed away from cancer in Los Angeles. We'll forever remember her for her roles in The Golden Girls, Maude and a brief stint as Edith Bunker's feminist cousin on All in the Family. She made waves in the 1970s when the titular character Maude had an abortion months before Roe v. Wade was decided. The two-part episode was so controversial many affiliate stations refused to air the shows. Like Maude, Bea was a champion of gender equity and racial equality. She also became a member of PETA after a 1987 anti-fur episode of The Golden Girls.

Besides television, Bea was a force on the Great White Way. She starred in the Threepenny Opera and played Yente the Matchmaker in Fiddler on the Roof, among other roles.
Indeed, Bea was one tough broad. She was one of the first female recruits in the U.S. Marines.

Preserve: Gimme 5

At Ladies Lotto New York's last meeting we were asked to bring all our #5 recyclables to Hooligan Studios, to be recycled by Preserve. I didn't quite get it until now. I mean, I recycle like it's nobody's business but I didn't understand why #5 was so special. It turns out tons of products utilize #5 plastic but they are not widely recycled -- even if you sort them out.

Preserve's Gimme 5 program helps keep plastic out of landfills; keeps recycling local and helps the company make new products. You can recycle Britta water filters too.

Click here to find out more about giving preserve five.

Sustainable Passion for Fashion

Pivot
1101 W. Fulton Market
Chicago, IL, 60607
Entrance on Aberdeen Street

Opened in 2007, Pivot is Chicago’s first boutique devoted to eco-fashion. All of the designers that Pivot carries use organic or sustainable materials and processes to create chic clothing, accessories and gifts. That means that the clothes are made of eco-smart fibers like organic cotton, bamboo and soy, as well as recycled materials, which lower fashion’s impact on the environment while making high-impact fashion statements. Added bonus: Many of the fibers are anti-bacterial, contain zero or few chemicals, breathe better and simply feel better against your skin, making them a great option for sensitive skin.

Pivot also strives to utilize eco-friendly and sustainable business practices including:

  • Fixtures designed and built by local artist Joshua Height of Brickermade. Height uses recycled materials to create unique custom furniture.
  • A zero-VOC (volatile organic compound) paint purchased locally at Greenmaker Building Supply for the air supply
  • CFL lightbulbs (compact fluorescent lightbulbs)
  • Shopping bags with 50% post consumer recycled fibers and reuse of all packaging that received with clothing shipments. If you bring your own bag — even better!

Pivot donates 1% of its profits to Growing Home, a local organization that provides job training and creates employment opportunities for homeless and low-income people in Chicago within the context of a non-profit organic agriculture business.

Seriously, it's a win-win situation.

Members of the Month - April 2009

Terry Hwang | San Francisco

San Francisco's Chinatown has had a strong influence on Terry Hwang ethnically and socially speaking. There she found her inspiration, identity and roots. While she's extremely proud of her Asian American heritage she did not let that stop her from exploring the rich world that surrounded the ethnic enclave where she was born and raised.

Armed with a degree in International Development Studies from UCLA; Terry explores emerging cultures; politics; economics and the effect they have on society. She's worked on several creative magazine projects including PLANETº and Prophecy. Also, she's helmed cultural programs at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. Currently, she's a gallery assistant at FIFTY24SF Gallery and writes for the pioneering evilmonito.com.

When Terry's not working on culturally minded projects you can find her speaking her second and third languages; Mandarin Chinese and Portuguese. She puts her love of the Portuguese language to good use as she practices the Afro-Brazilian art of capoeira with Capoeira Brasil Los Angeles and samba at Aquarela Samba in San Francisco. Terry's making moves, alright!

Missy Livingston | Los Angeles

Throw a dart on to a map of the United States or United Kingdom and there is a pretty good chance you'll land on one of the 22 locations where Missy Livingston lived before settling down in La La land. Not bad for a girl from Clearfield, Utah.

Early on, Missy had a deep love for music and began booking indie and punk bands in her hometown. From there she went on to own a gallery cum retail store and founded a music magazine that launched in the United States and London. This self-described "Jill of all trades" seems to have done it all. She's been involved in the fluid worlds of music, media and art for more than 12 years and shows no signs of stopping. Missy books shows for electronic artists and plans events all over the globe for Ghostly International.

Besides her love of music; she's a model, chef and entrepreneur. Essentially the list of Missy's body of work and interests could go on like a career criminal's rap sheet. She prides herself on her passion for knowledge and firmly believes "if you are going to do something, you should be able to do it right."

Christina Ray | New York

As Glowlab's Founder and Gallery Director, Christina nurtures and supports the work of artists inspired by urban life and technology. She also provides curatorial consultation for established and new collectors as well as museums and cultural organizations. She has participated on panels and juries with organizations including Rhizome, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and Eyebeam and lectured locally and internationally.

In 2003 Christina founded Conflux, the annual art and technology festival for the creative exploration of urban public space, and has led the festival as Director ever since. Yet another Ladies Lotto polyglot; Christina is fluent in Japanese and lived in Japan for four years where she worked with artists. This experience cultivated an aesthetic and cultural awareness that has influenced the growth of Glowlab’s international focus. Christina recently became a founding member of the Advisory Committee of the new 92YTribeca arts and entertainment venue, and is currently serving as Key Artistic Advisor for Times Square Public Art Planning with the Times Square Alliance.

Glowlab's latest exhibition of works by artist David Kesting features not only drawings and mixed media works but also a one-of-a-kind silk-screened fashion line and a signed, limited edition artist's book.

Angel An | Los Angeles

It started with watching bootleg copies of 'Home Alone' and 'Ju Dou' in her native China. Before Angel An knew it; she was having a full blown love affair with films. After a stint at NYU where she earned a B.A. in Art history; worked at an art consultancy firm and indulging what she called her "archeological fantasy" by working at an excavation site in Cyprus; she couldn't pass up more dirty work. Soon she embarked on the treacherous task of becoming an assistant at the notorious Endeavor Agency in Beverly Hills.

Angel escaped unscathed from her her first foray into the world of film and became the assistant to veteran producer Janet Yang on the film
Dark Matter. From there she made the jump from production to becoming the Manager of Acquisitions, Marketing and Distribution at First Independent Pictures. Angel sees each day as an opportunity to learn and is never bored by her job
. Angel has big dreams; she plans to transform the world through great films.

When you have some down time, check out Angel's latest release, Gigantic; starring Zooey Deschanel and
Paul Dano.

Save money, save the Earth!

In honour of Earthy Day, here are 31 ways to make a difference in our daily lives, thanks to No Impact Man.

1) Air dry all laundry and wash all laundry in cold water, always wash full loads, and use a drying rack inside if it is raining. It’s good for the earth and great for your skin, a free humidifier in the house. Which also makes it feel a few degrees warmer in winter, and cooler in summer. I use soapnuts for laundry.

2) Buy all organic.

3) Buy all organic non-toxic beauty care products and make-up. It's a much safer choice for your precious skin.

4) Use baking soda and vinegar for cleaning the bathroom. Ms. Meyer Clean Day for dishes, Citri-Clean for counters and general purpose cleaning. I use a loofah for scrubbing dishes (I am growing my own right now so I won’t have to buy them anymore!) My sister is making scrubbies by crocheting them, we will offer these for sale soon!

5) Take cloth bags to store for groceries and all other purchases. Take muslin bags to grocery store for produce.

6) Recycle, re-use, make my own and have stopped buying anything I don’t really need.

7) Don’t use paper towels, rags work just as well.

8) Don’t buy stuff in plastic, I try to buy all glass. Store all food in glass. Re-use glass jars. I mostly buy real food (meat, produce) instead of anything that needs a label, so no packaging.

9) Use recycled toilet paper, there are plenty of options available.

10) Make my own gluten free granola, make my own mayonnaise, salad dressings, spice blends.

11) Compost food scraps... no excuses, even if you live in a small apartment thanks to this.

or

13) Bokashi (a way to deal with indoor kitchen scraps with NO odor and yields compost WAY faster). I have been using the Bokashi method of dealing with kitchen waste for about 3 weeks now…I love it!

14) Use very low flow shower heads. Ace Hardware has a 1.5 GPM with a shut-off valve.

15) Use all CF light bulbs…and use them as little as possible. I have one evening a week that I use no lights..on Shabbat! Dinner by candlelight!

16) Use grey water from shower (I keep a 3 gallon bucket in shower and use it throughout the day to water plants or take what’s left to the flower beds.

17) Use water from rinsing dishes to water flower beds.

18) Use a broom on all my wooden floors instead of using vacuum cleaner.

19) Run as few errands as possible, car pool and combine trips.

20) Use micro-cloths to clean with, even on glass you do not need cleaning products!

21) NEVER buy bottled water. I bought a Kleen Kanteen for each person in the family, we refill and take with us. I’ve had mine over a year.

22) Go paperless or CD-less as much as possible. I provide my clients with emails of my book, but still put cookbook software on CD.

23) Unplug all appliances not being used. Yes, that cell phone charger and TV are using power when you aren’t using them! I use power strips to keep them plugged in, turn them off at night, or when I’m gone all day.

24) Use only a hurricane lamp when we sit outside at night. It gives enough light to read by…but is perfect turned low …for just hanging out. Very romantic, too!

25) Use candlelight at dinner, not just on Shabbat! And it's romantic.

26) I have an outdoor solar heated shower that I built.

27) I put in a raised bed garden, square foot garden I have green leaf lettuce in a grow box, cherry and big sweet tomatoes, basil, thyme. I have sweet potatoes growing, beets (mmmm, beet greens), onions, Swiss chard, purple flowering kale, nastutiums, broccoli, cucumbers, peppers, red potatoes, a banana tree. Inside I am growing cucumbers and strawberries hydroponically.

28) I use a non-disposable razor, an old-fashioned stainless steel, very high quality razor that uses double edged blades. It was 24.00 from ClassicShaving.com. The blades are 10 for 5.99, and they are double edged! They give the closest, smoothest shave you can imagine! No disposable blade can compare.

29) Wash dishes with 2 dish pans in the sink, one for hot soapy water, one with warm rinse water. Do glasses first, pause a moment to let the soapy water drip off, then move to rinse water. Stop when rinse water is almost full and rinse quickly. Repeat with silver, plates, then pots and utensils. All with 2 dishpans full of water. Then I pour the soapy water, with all that organic matter, onto my plants in the garden. It helps repel pests and loosens the soil. And good for the biceps when you carry it outdoors.

30) I water my garden with buckets from the rain barrels that are under the eaves of my garage. 10 feet from my garden. The front flower garden gets watered entirely from the dish water.

31) I work out at home, no expensive gym memberships that I never used anyway. I save all the expense of membership, and gas and time driving. I have a set of weights, two exercise balls, a yoga mat and a chin-up bar.

Juice

No, I'm not referring to the seminal film starring Tupac. However, just like Juice's leading man, the Leatherman Juice CS4 is versatile and super cute. The Juice CS4 is perfect for the spring days ahead. No doubt there'll be countless picnics, cook outs and bonfires to attend. This little baby -- there's a larger version -- is made with small hands in mind and is just as good at multi-tasking as the original Leatherman. You can uncork a bottle of wine, chop veggies and cheese wedges for your proper guests, or fix something around the house. It'll be kind of impressive when you whip this out in certain company.

With a 25 year warranty, the CS4 is going to last longer than several Hollywood marriages combined. Find out where to get your own,

Barefoot for a Day

Can't see the TOMS Shoes video? Visit the Ladies Lotto blog.

Take a load and your kicks off*. Today, TOMS; the purveyors of cute shoes for a cause are reminding us shoes are a luxury for many children in third world countries. The video above has some pretty sobering facts;

  • Some children have to walk barefoot for miles to get clean water and food.
  • The blisters and sores caused by going barefoot in unsanitary conditions can lead to deadly infections.
  • No shoes, no service -- often, shoeless children are not allowed to attend school.
When you're ready to put your shoes back on, walk over to your computer and order a pair of TOMS. You buy one pair and an adorable kid gets a pair for free!

Click here for more information and related events.

*Yes, I am currently barefoot.

Animal Style

iPhone apps are terribly distracting but we love them so. Ladies Lotto member Heather Lipner has just put her furry little baby, the Animalizer on the app market. Animalizer lets you place the face of your loved ones -- or enemies -- on the bodies of more than 25 animals. You can see what your ex looks like as a pig or what your kid sister looks like as a lamb.

While you're at it, check out the
blog for more animal hijinks. You can even submit animal related photos and videos to be considered for posting.

Style Swap: economize and socialize

Since July 2007, Jess James and her partner Shannon Dunne of James + Dunne Styling hosted the first bi-monthly “Style Swap” where women arrived with a few clothing items and accessories and left with items from other fashionistas’ closets. Each guest is given personalized tags to mark the items of their choice, but who gets what is determined by drawings. For the most coveted items of the night, everyone plays a round of musical chairs!

The swaps are economical and eco-chic: Any items left at the end of the night are donated to Vintage Values, Bargain Box or Dress for Success. The point is, you can score some sweet deals and clear out your closet. Seems like a win-win situation to us.

These ladies swap in Wilmington, Raleigh, and Charleston. And if you're not in the area, have no fear! Their site offers some tips for hosting your own Style Swap:

The "Rules" for Women Who Engage in Social Media

Lipsticking guest blogger, Lena West, Chief of Social Media Strategy at xynoMedia recently posted "Rules" of Social Media Engagement for Women. They are:

  1. You're not one of the guys nor will you ever be.
  2. Use emoticons and exclamation points sparingly.
  3. IM'ing at night, is IM'ing at night.
  4. Keep your beau to yourself.
  5. The women are watching.
For an in-depth explanation of her rules, please visit Lipsticking. http://www.lipsticking.com/2009/04/rules-of-social-media-engagement-for-women.html

Curious to know your thoughts about these. Is she on point or just plain wrong? Would you add or take anything away?
