Members of the Month - March 2009

Amy Butterworth | New York

By day Amy is nose-deep in Actionscript at Walrus, a boutique creative shop where she specializes in flash development. She's thrilled to find her place as a full -time interactive geek after working primarily in print design at some of New York's best ad agencies (Wieden & Kennedy, MadDogs & Englishmen) since graduating from Pratt, with honors in 2001.

Amy is an avid biker, cook (she holds the first prize from the first annual New York City Casserole competition) and she makes many of her own clothes. In addition, Amy has co-hosted -- along with fellow Ladies Lotto member Leslie Hermelin -- the fabulously successful annual Clothing Swaptacular for the past four years.

If ODB were alive today, he'd give Amy props because she's for the children. Besides juggling an active work and social life, she mentored middle and high school students. Amy taught youths to express themselves via electronic media at the Digital Clubhouse program.

She currently lives in Williamsburg with her husband Doug and two very lucky street cats. Her side project of the month is the piano bar act, "Chi-Chi LeBoom at the Starlite." They play lounge covers of mid-nineties novelty songs and aim to play outside of the apartment soon. In addition to being awesome overall, Amy has the distinction of having been present at the very first Ladies Lotto meeting.

Angela Gusman | Chicago

With her affinity for all things creative, Angela Gusman graduated from Columbia College Chicago with a BA in Arts, Entertainment, and Media Management. Currently, Angela works as a Marketing Specialist at a Fortune 100 company. Angela envisions herself to be a renaissance woman, owning her own marketing and media company.

Don’t let the corporate pedigree fool you; Angela can bust a move. You can find her driving around Chicago with a bumper sticker that reads “I’d rather be dancing…” She’s a dance and yoga guru and is always encouraging her peers to join her in a class.

When it’s not freezing cold you can catch “Ang” and her yorkie, Tuffy (aka Tough Guy off the Streets) shopping for stylish bargains around Chicago. Besides shopping; Angela enjoys photography, DJing, and checking out live music acts in her spare time.

Erika Sunmark | Seattle

As Senior Video Producer of Frause Visual, Erika works with clients in the corporate, advertising and non-profit industries. A Chicago-native, Erika has ten years of experience in video production from scheduling manager and production coordinator; to puppet wrangler. Her outgoing personality and multi-tasking ability makes her the ideal producer.

Outside of the office, Erika has co-produced a number of short films through the 48Hr Film Festival. In May 2008, her team screened at the Cannes Film Festival. There she perfected her French accent and wine tasting prowess.

Ever the film buff; she is the proud mother of two little killers named Chewbacca and Indiana Jones. It's one if by land and two if by sea for this lady. In the summer you'll find her sailing around on a boat and she tears up the slopes in the winter.

J. Dilla's back!

To commemorate J. Dilla's career, Public Media Group in collaboration with Ma Dukes created a poster in 2006 using over 3000 pictures, including everyone who has ever worked with Dilla. The poster was limited to 1000 pieces and sold out in days. Ma Dukes found a small stack in her basement and Public Media is making them available again, each one signed & numbered by Ma Dukes. This is a limited run edition, so when they are gone, they are gone!

20 Ways to Live Green(er)

Organic material--food and paper, for example--rot and release methane, a potent greenhouse gas, when sent to the landfill. When the liners meant to seal landfills eventually crack, toxic substances can leach into the water table, causing hard to trace illnesses in faraway communities.

But perhaps the worst thing is, when we throw something in the landfill to be buried in the ground (or worse, in an incinerator to be burned into our air), it represents a waste of resources that we took from the earth in the first place.

For these reasons, I've put together this list of 25 ways to avoid making trash suggest by readers of the No Impact Man blog:

  1. Keep your own cutlery with you so you don't have to use the plastic versions
  2. Cut up your old clothes for use as rags and avoid paper towels
  3. Use mason jars to carry everything from drinking water to a packed lunch
  4. Use a handkerchief instead of tissue
  5. Make notepaper from the blank side of junk mail
  6. Give your old eyeglasses to the local Lions Club for distribution to those in need
  7. Make cardboard egg cartons into biodegradable seed starters
  8. Cut yogurt containers into strips and use them to label garden plants
  9. Use cloth bags for the bulk bins at the grocery store
  10. Empty out vacuum cleaner bags and reuse
  11. Use cloth napkins instead of paper towel
  12. Cook from scratch to avoid food packaging
  13. Use shaving soap bars to avoid throwaway bottles
  14. Make your own yogurt so there are no plastic tubs
  15. Wash and reuse ziplock bags
  16. Use the waxy liners of cereal boxes to wrap sandwiches
  17. Use scrap office paper for kids coloring books
  18. Carry a cloth for drying your hands and wrapping things in
  19. Pack a lunch in a reusable container instead of buying lunch in plastic packaging
  20. Use rechargeable batteries
Thanks to No Impact Man for the tips.

Female Robot debuted at Tokyo Fashion Week

It seems fitting that Japan would be the first country to merge robotics with fashion. Debuting at Tokyo Fashion Week later this month will be cybernetic human HRP-4C, a new female humanoid robot developed by Japan’s government sponsored research laboratory AIST, reported Britain’s Telegraph. Her height, reaching only 5 feet 2 inches is meant to mimic the average size of the Japanese woman, as is her waiflike weight at 95 pounds. Her appearance, however, designed with slightly oversized eyes, a tiny nose and shoulder-length hair, looks more like an anime drawing than a human. She boasts 42 motion motors programmed to mimic the movements of flesh-and-blood fashion models, fully equipped at striking poses, flashing smiles and pouting.

“If we had made the robot too similar to a real human, it would have been uncanny,” said one of the inventors, humanoid research leader Shuji Kajita. “We have deliberately leant toward an anime style.”

The robot, which cost more than 200m yen, or £1.4m, to create, and was “developed mainly for use in the entertainment industry,” is not for sale at the moment. “We unveiled this to attract attention in society,” said Junji Ito, a senior official at the institute. “It’s important that people feel good about humanoids and want to work with them. We shifted from a dry mechanical image to a very human image.”

Artists launch ‘Free Store’ in lower Manhattan near Ground Zero

Artists have launched a “Free Store” in Lower Manhattan on Nassau Street near the area of Ground Zero that offers every item in its shop for the cost of nothing. According to an article in Britain’s Guardian newspaper, anyone can come in and browse through its goods. If they like it and need it (needing it being the only criteria for obtaining it) then they are welcome to walk out of the store with it - free of charge.

Items seen at the store range from apparel, footwear and accessories to art supplies to home accessories and even electronics. Artists Athena Robles and Anna Stein launched the store with a $9,000 grant from a local cultural body and the September 11 fund. After 18 months of planning, the store opened on Friday with the aim of giving back to those in need, while remembering the 9/11 tragedy. The transactions are accounted for on record books and customers are given a receipt.

Lady Skate

An impressive lady of the New York skate scene is boutique owner Amy Gunther, guest speaker for Ladies Lotto New York's March meeting.

Her passion for the skate culture resulted in the opening of the skate spot KCDC in 2001, located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

The store is a well-know within the scene and skaters all over pay visits regularly to cop great brands such as Vans, WeSC and Insight, browse through the vast selection of boards or practice new tricks on the mini ramp inside the store.

In July last year KCDC launched their first signature shoe, a Chukka Low collaboration between KCDC, graffiti artist Neck Face and Vans.

Second Life in NY

An Emergent Second Life shows tomorrow at the gallery Jack the Pelican Presents and at the Brooklyn is Watching sim in the virtual world Second Life.

An Emergent Second Life is a Paper Tiger TV production about self-making and world-building in the virtual world Second Life, AND it's created by Jason Pine (Purchase College - SUNY), Bianca Ahmadi (The New School and an LL Member!) and Juan Rubio (The New School).
Brooklyn is Watching is an experimental cross-world art exhibition and criticism venue that connects a public art exhibition region in the virtual world Second Life with a Real World gallery in Williamsburg, called Jack the Pelican Presents. Art works that are installed in the virtual space are visible on a 52-inch flat screen in the real-life gallery space in Williamsburg. Viewers can visit, via their avatars, the virtual space or, in the flesh, stop by Jack the Pelican Presents in Williamsburg to view the virtual artwork on the flat screen.

An Emergent Second Life
will be available for viewing for one week after the screening.
