How To Call A Broad

Globe trotting ladies here's a helpful site: HowToCallAbroad.com to get direct instructions on how to call practically any where from practically any where.

Times Square's First Eco-Friendly Billboard

As the ball drops on New Year's Eve, Times Square's first Eco-Board, a billboard powered solely by wind and solar energy, will be the backdrop for New York City's most famous celebration. Ricoh Company, Ltd., a global leader in digital office solutions, is continuing construction on the Eco-Board, which will lessen the amount of carbon emissions by 18 tons per year and will save enough electricity to light six average-sized homes for a year.

Although inclement weather and lengthy processes and inspections have prolonged the installation of the sign, the wind turbines, solar panels and vinyl have been installed, and the turbines are expected to be operational in the coming weeks. Live installation of the Eco-Board can be viewed here.

Happy Green New Year everyone!

Wear Plastic Bags On Your Feet

These boots are the work of Chilean industrial design student Camila Labra, and made mostly of recycled plastic bags. The boots are built by fusing several layers of plastic polyethylene bags together to create a thicker and more resistant material to work with.

Their interior is covered with quilted piqué cotton fabric to make them more comfortable and prevent too much heat. According to the designer, the boots are impermeable, flexible, light and non toxic.

The line of boots is named Dacca (aka Dhaka) after Bangladesh's capital, one of the most polluted with plastic bags in the world (the bags were banned in that city since 2002).

Made after special orders, the boots are sold for 22,000 Chilean Pesos (45 USD).

Natural Deodorant Sans Dancing Bear Tats

Searching for an alternative to deodorants containing alcohol & aluminum but don't want to smell like a dirty phish head with a dancing bear tattoo? Here's a little something for you - Lanvilin.

Lavilin deodorant was developed by scientists using Arnica and Calendula - herbal flowers known for centuries to be soothing, healing and anti-bacterial. This deodorant does not interfere with healthy bodily functions. It treats the problem of perspiration odor at the source - by killing the bacteria which cause perspiration odor, not by clogging pores with harsh chemicals or by masking unpleasant odors with heavy perfumes.

A single application of Lavilin, eliminates odor for up to 3-7 days and retails for about $23.99 but if you're lucky like I was, you can find it at a store like Marshall's for a discounted price of $11.99.

Biodegradable Credit Card... an oxymoron?

Discover launched their biodegradable credit card “in response to greater consumer interest in green products, and we hope this will appeal to those interested in living a greener life,” Discover publicist Laura Ingiss wrote in a press release.

“The biodegradable Discover Card is another way for environmentally conscious consumers to do their part to help protect our planet,” said Kelly Tufts, director of marketing planning and strategy at Discover. “The card itself is made of biodegradable PVC, which breaks down 99% in nine months to five years in soil, water, compost, or whatever microorganisms are present (e.g. landfills or composts). Plus, the card leaves no toxic effect on the environment,” she wrote in an email.

But how green can a credit card really be if serves to encourage consumption? Read more here.

Happy holidays ladies, take it easy on the spending if you can.

Ladies Lotto Los Angeles
Heather Lipner

Heather Lipner caught the the dot com bug at the tender age of 17. During college she was lured into becoming a marketing representative with free CDs, merchandise and concert tickets offered by the likes of IUMA.com, Clickradio.com and Riffage.com. She enjoyed all the perks but had an ulterior motive; to gain more knowledge of branding, design and technology.

After earning a bachelor's degree in economics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Heather decided not to return to the Windy City where she was born. Instead, she opted to work in sunny Los Angeles. Initially a web designer, Heather has worked in several positions including account and project manager. In 2005, she joined the ranks of Fluidesign, an award-winning branding and interactive firm.

Heather's comprehensive work in interactive branding and web design provides a solid source of leadership at Fluidesign. She is constantly inspired by the ever-growing and ever-changing environment of the interactive design world. Heather loves listening to the vision of her client's new business and product ideas, while being a key component in the latter. The most rewarding part of the process for her is to watch her client's projects succeed. Her creative energy combined with her business
savvy is what sets her apart as Fluidesign's general manager.

Cheap Tattoos For A Cause

Bad news is all around these days, job loss, wallstreet corruption, slowing retail sales you name it.
In an effort to help out and cheer everyone up the Lower East Side Tattoo parlor Daredevil is running a recession special meant to bring people in to the shop affordably and help out those most affected. This Saturday Daredevil is offering a special sheet of designs for a bargain price of $50 per tattoo. These are the facts:
  • A special sheet of designs will be offered at a price of $50 per tattoo. The usual shop minimum is $100.
  • On December 20th 100% of the cost of each tattoo will be donated by the shop and the artist doing the tattoo.
  • $40 of each tattoo will go towards Food Bank NYC.
  • $10 of each tattoo will go towards animal rescue shelters. We have selected a no kill shelter deeply affected by the foreclosure crisis in Nevada.
  • After December 20th Daredevil will continue to offer the special designs and will continue to donate the shops percentage to the selected charities

Washing your clothes in hot water?

A full 90 percent of the energy used in washing clothes goes toward heating the water, so it stands to reason that using less energy by washing in cold, unheated water would create significant environmental savings. But just how much difference are we really talking about?

TreeHugger did the math, and came up with some pretty interesting results. It turns out that pressing the cold/cold button (instead of the hot/warm button) on your washing machine has the same impact as...

...driving about 9 miles in a car or the production, transportation and storage of a six pack of beer. It may not be too surprising that one load of laundry doesn't make a huge amount of difference compared to, say, not eating meat or dairy. But, multiply those impacts by 392 -- the number of laundry loads an average U.S. home washes in a year -- and, all of the sudden, there are some real impacts.

Washing laundry in hot water is really wasteful
To wit: Washing every load on the hot/warm cycle (in a top loading machine and an electric water heater) for a year is equivalent to burning about 182 gallons of gasoline in a car; in an average (19.8 miles per gallon) car, that'll get you around 3595 miles. So, wash in hot/warm, or drive almost 3600 miles -- same difference.

Similarly, if you wash with the hot/cold cycle (in a top loading machine and an electric water heater), you'll end up with 2407 pounds of CO2 per year -- just over a metric ton -- which is equal to about one round-trip cross-country flight (6171 miles of long-haul flying).

What does this all mean? Aside from being a great example of how little decisions add up to make a big difference, it shows how wasteful heating large quantities of water can be. Just selecting the "cold/cold" cycle has the potential to save as much CO2 emissions each year as thousands of miles driven in a car, or even an airplane flight or two.

Tokyo to power subway stations with human energy

When the East Japan Railway Company (JR East) decided to invest in alternative energy sources, it only had to look to its users for the perfect source of energy. Recently the company decided to update their Tokyo Station with a revolutionary new piezoelectric energy generating floor. The system will harvest the kinetic energy generated by crowds to power ticket gates and display systems!

Piezoelectric flooring is a technology with a wide range of applications that is slowly being adopted in the race to develop alternative energy sources. After all, human power is readily available in pretty much any area with heavy foot traffic, such as a dancefloor, or a tourist attractions. Naturally, we were excited to hear that JR East will be installing these systems in the floor of one of busiest subway stations on the planet.

JR East has been trialing these systems for the past year. They have recently improved and expanded the system by changing the floor covering from rubber to stone tiles, and have improved the layout of the mechanisms to improve energy generation. The total amount of floor-space will add up to around 25 square meters, and they expect to obtain over 1,400kw per day - more than enough to power their systems.

Imagine how much power we could generate in NY if we installed these at the Union Square station alone?!

The Advantages of Being a Woman Artist

Buy a Boob

Hi Ladies,

This Friday my studio mates and I are going to be having a holiday party and friend's and family sample sale (invite to follow).

Jacqueline (our resident photographer) is going to be selling boobs!

The plan is for her to take a polaroid of as many single boobs (singular - like just one boob) as possible, and then people can buy a boob from a bin of boobs.

A % of the profits will go to her sister's http://www.letsrockandroll.net/">breast cancer organization.

So, we're in need of as many breasts as possible before Friday evening.
There would be no indication of whose boob is in any of the pictures - no one would even know that you participated (unless you told them).

Let me know if you are up to swing by the studio and have a polaroid taken of one of your melons. It would be mucho appreciated.

Our studio is on North 10th Street between Bedford and Driggs. L train to Bedford.

Thou Shall Not Talk Shit

LLNY member Scosha is an Australian-born, Brooklyn-based artist who is emerging as a successful jewelry designer. She considers herself a Story Jeweler and adds her unique artistic flavor to each piece.

For Holiday 2008 Scosha is debuting a new collection emblazoned with the phrase "Thou Shall Not Talk Shit." The jewelry can serve as a reminder to follow through with the things you swear by and goals you want to achieve, and could be a push in the right direction for shit talkers who can't take a hint!

The Ladies Lotto Benefit for Charity Water online auction has two pieces from Scosha's collection to bid on so you can get your shit together and donate to a clean water project in Ethiopia.

Claw for Water

Queens-born, Long Island-bred Claw Money has dominated the NYC graffiti scene since dropping out of FIT to form the graff crew PMS. In addition to being one of the first ladies to tackle (and conquer) that male-dominated world, she is a stylist and launched her eponymous line in Spring 2002. Claw also wrote a book, Bombshell: The Life and Crimes of Claw Money, with powerHouse.

This busy lady has gone on to create an 8 piece collect for Boost Mobile. The collection consists of 3 mobile device cases, a belt bag, a traditional school boy nap sack, hip bag, round duffle bag, laptop case and laptop tote bag. All 3 device case sizes attach to the larger bags in a functional, modular fashion. The collection is made from low-toxicity “vegan approved” artificial leather, which includes oversized custom prints, charms in the shape of her graff tag, and gold trims.

Pieces from the Claw x Boosted collection (such as the tote pictured above) are part of the Ladies Lotto Benefit for Charity Water online auction, so go get your bid on for clean water!

Wishing on a Star

Fragile looking characters seem to float in the stark white backgrounds of Brooklyn-based artist David Kesting's postcard sized pieces. Kesting's work touches on the mundane and sometimes uplifting aspects of human emotions and relationships, or lack thereof.

Several of his pieces are a part of Ladies Lotto's Charity Water benefit auction.

With your help, we can make a connection with the people of the Ethiopian village where we'll help Charity Water build a well.

Thou Shalt Covet This

Form plus function; times eco-consciousness equals Tara St. James' line,
Covet. Bamboo, organic cotton, soybean rayon and natural dyes are just a few of the elements that make Covet stand out in a world filled with unpronounceable frankenfabrics. Tara has been described as "a beacon of light in the dark, jagged landscape of the fashion industry (Discerning Brute)."

Covet's got more fashion and eco cred than you can shake a stick at so you'll want to get your hands on these
two offerings from Ladies Lotto's Charity Water benefit auction.

Covet this line, not clean water.

Drive Me Crazy

Amanda Dolan's vibrant, loud and in your face collages have put collectors and art lovers on notice. In 2008, Amanda's second show Call Me Crazy was something of a year book; highlighting several pioneering women including Cyndi Lauper, Joan of Arc and the pin-ups pin up, Bettie Page.

Amanda has graciously donated
Bettie Page to Ladies Lotto's Charity Water benefit auction. Click here to see what's driving the art world crazy from coast to coast.

The mixed media work measures 36 x 48".

The value of clean
water is immeasurable.

Zip It

Owning a car is a luxury in a bustling city where parking is scarce, space at a garage can cost as much as your monthly rent and insurance premiums are sky high. Enter Zipcar, the world's largest car share service. You can rent a car for as little, or as long as you want; with convenient pick up locations all over the city.

Zipcar has been supporting local events and charities since its inception. Currently, New York City residents can bid on a membership and driving credit package to benefit
Charity Water.

Clean drinking water is a necessity, not a luxury.

Where Fashion Meets Fabulous: Harriet's Alter Ego

Beyond offering the worldly woman wildly fashionable clothing and accessories you'd-sell-your-soul-for, Harriet’s Alter Ego can pamper her body with natural body care products, enlighten her mind with art featured in their gallery, ease her spirit through yoga classes and reprieves in the boutiques garden as well as dress the men in her life.

For owners Hekima Hapa and Ngozi Odita, Harriet’s is the idea that fashion should be functional. For their faithful following, however, Harriet’s is a way of life. And although each year their line and boutique concept continually evolves, Harriet’s approach has remained unconventionally classic. A testament to time well spent and design well done.

Harriet’s Alter Ego, truly a lifestyle brand where fashion imitates life.

Harriet's supports clean water in Africa, and you should too! Click here!

A (Much Needed) Peace Treaty

Friends Farah Malik and Dana Arbib created A Peace Treaty using the juxtaposition of their differing backgrounds (Malik is a Pakistani Muslim and Arbib a Libyan Jew) and their shared interest in high-fashion and ancient craftsmanship. It is an evolving collection aimed at creating beautiful, ethically produced, artisan-level accessories and apparel.

We are so excited to have this exquisite stole shown above at our Charity Water Auction! It has red, green, clementine, purple, and blue stripes with silver tila yarn detail. It measures 80x42" and is hand-loomed in 100% cotton.

Talib Kweli Heads to Brazil

TALIB KWELI TO HEADLINE 7TH ANNUAL HIP HOP FESTIVAL IN BRAZIL

Past participating American artists include De La Soul, Jurassic 5 and Pharoahe Monch

Santo André, Brazil (December 5, 2008) – Widely known in Brazil as the most important and successful alternative rap festival in the country, the 2008 Indie Hip Hop Festival presented by 11th Parallel Worldwide returns to the SESC Santo Andre events space on Saturday, December 13, 2008 and Sunday, December 14, 2008 with American headliner Talib Kweli. Continuing in its tradition of showcasing the best of Brazilian and international Hip Hop, the 7th annual festival provides a platform for Brazilian Hip Hop artists who have released critically acclaimed albums this year and will feature performances by Kamau, Subsolo, Sombra, Projeto Manada, Enézimo, Doncesao & Dr. Caligari. Rounding out the bill are festival MC Rodrigo Brandão of Mamelo Sound System and DJ Marco.

Catering to the Hip Hop community, the festival is unique in that it takes place at the SESC Santo André arts and culture center, which is located on the outskirts of São Paulo in close proximity to three large favela (shanty town) communities. The arts and culture center has served as the ideal venue for the annual festival by making it accessible to the core Hip Hop community while also attracting a diverse audience from greater metropolitan São Paulo. While most Brazilian concert events also remain inaccessible due to unaffordably high ticket prices, Indie Hip Hop’s mission is to provide quality music events open to everyone by keeping ticket prices extremely low.

Art Jump at the MoMA

Before going to the Ladies Lotto benefit on Monday night (and I hope you'll all be there!), stop by the MoMA for a little art, liquor and jumping!

Next Monday (12/8), Allison Reimus, of Jumping in Art Museums, is organizing a giant art jump at the MoMA. Her blog which features pictures of people jumping in front of pieces of art. So why not join in, especially since the MoMA is staying open until 8:45 and all us working people can go.

She's asking people to start jumping en masse at 6:30 in front of the Pipolotti Rist exhibit. The rest of the museum is open, but she figured that Starry Night will already have enough crowding.

Word on the street is there’s also going to be a cash bar and the first 600 people who come for the evening event get a free day pass.
Would love to see a bunch of well dressed, successful women show up on their way to benefit (if you know what I mean).
